But when you get good players, ... my goodness! What is the problem? What's wrong today that that's not good? Having a good player is not good? Having a guy that's worth his weight in gold is not good for your business?"

Gregg Williams tape may cause reluctance to do Hard Knocks | ProFootballTalk
The most damning piece of information that has publicly surfaced in the Saints’ bounty scandal was the audiotape of Gregg Williams encouraging his players to injure players on the 49ers, and that audiotape only exists because the Saints agreed to give filmmaker Sean Pamphilon access to the team. ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported today that at least one team has mentioned the Williams audio as a reason not to do Hard Knocks, and some teams are "paranoid" about Hard Knocks because they’re concerned that giving access to a reality show could lead to something damaging to their reputations being revealed.
Even if those coaches aren’t running a bounty program or in any other way violating any rules, they still might worry that a piece of audio or video from training camp could be misconstrued, and could cast the team or the coaches in a bad light. The last Hard Knocks revealed that Rex Ryan has a potty mouth, but some coaches could be concerned about something more serious than that.
Begin sarcasm: Oh no. Surely other teams and their coaches don't talk like Williams in defensive meetings. I thought the Saints and GW were the only ones evil enough to say things like that. End sarcasm

"Roger's standing with the league is fine, don't mistake that," said one owner, who declined to be identified. "I don't want to say this stuff is minutia. That's not it. But it's also not all his doing and nothing he has done is out of step with what any of us believe should be done.
The league has devolved into an aimless, reactionary, bloated, drunken, empire of absurdity. It was an impressive and enjoyable ride to the top but now we're witnesses to its awkward, unsightly fall from grace.
Goodell, if he has good legal counsel, probably has been advised that if he wants to avoid people going digging, he shouldn't give them reason to pick up a shovel. But he has given players such as Vilma every reason to dig by scapegoating them and making them look like rogue thugs who turned an otherwise safe Sunday activity into a dangerous sport. It is disingenuous when viewed generously and the height of hypocrisy in any light.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell doesn't add much to the New Orleans Saints bounty discussion - New Orleans Saints Football NFL News - NOLA.com
The closest Goodell came to offering any hope to the Saints players or fans was when he was asked if he has ever second-guessed himself after hearing such passionate denials by players like Vilma and Scott Fujita and complaints from players like Drew Brees.
"Sure, you second-guess yourself. That's what an appeals process is for," Goodell said of a player appeals process that is still ongoing. "You want to hear what the players have to say. Some of them indicated that they wanted to come in and talk before a decision was made. I invited them in. They decided not to do that, at the NFLPA's recommendation, I think. So when we get to the appeals we'll get to talk about that and hear from one another."
Hopefully that means Goodell is willing to share more details with the suspended players at some point, because they deserve more clarity about why they've received the most severe penalties in league history.
We didn't really expect to get that clarity Tuesday during Goodell's press conference, but the players and those in Saints management deserve more.

Mike "Saints Hater" Freeman changes his tune about the Saints
I'm breaking my rule of never linking to a Mike Freeman post because this one contains quotes and information supposedly from Saints players that I haven't seen before. The part about why the coaches can't speak up is particularly interesting.
For the past several weeks, some Saints players have contacted me, saying those accused in the bounty case, as well as the team itself, have been treated unfairly by the media (including by me). They spoke on the condition their identities were protected, fearing retribution from the NFL (in fact, Saints players said repeatedly that it can't be overstated just how much people in that locker room right now fear the NFL).
So I listened as Saints players told their side. What they said was somewhat eye-opening.
The overall message is that the NFL really doesn't have proof of a bounty system, and if it did, it would release that proof.
That's not a surprise. Where things get interesting is when players break down every piece of known evidence the NFL has released. That's when doubts about the NFL's case creep in. Creep. Not set up permanent residence, but creep.
This isn't to say the Saints are right. In fact, no player was able to answer satisfactorily the biggest question of all: Why would Roger Goodell risk his reputation and that of the entire sport on a bluff?
Nonetheless, players expressed these concerns:
• Players say they have seen the discipline letters from the NFL to the Saints' Sean Payton, Gregg Williams, Joe Vitt and Mickey Loomis. They claim those letters don't simply state the allegations and the imposed punishment. They claim the letters tell the four men, in general terms, that if they stay mostly quiet, the league will let them back into the sport after a certain number of games. (The NFL denied this, but wouldn't address other claims by Saints players.)
Implied in that, Saints players say, is that if the coaches do talk, their suspensions could go longer. This is why Payton and especially Williams have said almost nothing.

Mickey Loomis Responds to Brees WWL Interview
We've heard from Drew Brees about his frustration over not yet getting a new contract and the lack of communication he feels has been holding it up. Today, both Mickey Loomis and Tom Benson responded during a press conference for the team's Hall of Fame inductees. Here's what Mickey had to say:
"Well, look, I'm obviously aware of the comments, and I'm not going to respond to anything other than...look, I'm with him, I feel for him, I feel with him," Loomis said. "He wants to be here right now, I want him to be here right now, and you know, we'll work hard to get that accomplished."
"This is important, it's not just important to Drew, but it's important to our team," Loomis said. "The magnitude of this contract is going to impact our team for a long, long period of time, and so we've got to get it right. Got to get it right. It's got to be right for Drew, but it's got to be right for our team as well. And...We'll get there."

Jonathan Vilma @JonVilma51 maybe this will get some people attention
Jonathan Vilma Files Defamation Lawsuit Against Roger Goodell
Saints LB Jonathan Vilma reportedly filed a lawsuit today in the Eastern District Court of Louisiana vs. Roger Goodell. You can view a copy of the entire complaint HERE. Here's a taste:
By this action, Vilma seeks to recover damages for defamatory statements made by Roger Goodell, Commissioner of the National Football League ("NFL"). Vilma is a professional football player for the New Orleans Saints ("Saints"), a Member Club of the NFL. Goodell, speaking publicly about certain Saints executives, coaches and players, in relation to purported efforts designed to injure opposing players, made public statements concerning Vilma which were false, defamatory and injurious to Vilma’s professional and personal reputation.
This s*** just got real (as if it wasn't real enough already). What do you think, folks? Will this be of any benefit to him or will it just be a waste of energy? Whatever the result, I'm happy to see him do it. People can say what they will against Mr. Vilma, but it seems to me that only a man steadfastly sure of his innocence would do something like this. Will this force Goodell to fully release whatever "evidence" he supposedly has against our no. 51? We can assume that was a major reason in filing this lawsuit. Can't wait to find out.

Mike Florio thinks Dave Cariello is "brilliant"
Over the weekend, the folks at Canal Street Chronicles posted a brilliant item suggesting that the Saints would use Coachella-style Tupac technology to simulate the presence of coach Sean Payton on the sidelines during 2012 games.
It was obviously a joke, but Dave Cariello nailed the underlying sentiment.
According to Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the Saints will devote empty seats all season to Payton, in meeting rooms, on the team bus, and on the team plane.
Sean Payton to rent office space in Benson Tower
The suspended coach has a new downtown office in Benson Tower, which is essentially right next to the Superdome. Payton required league approval to rent the office. (We're sure Saints owner Tom Benson will give him a good deal.) If Payton wants to talk to a team official about a non-football matter, he has to do so by speaker phone in the presence of Saints legal counsel.
