Islanders fan that grew up in Westchester (Yes, we exist). Living in Lauderdale, Minnesota where I attend Luther Seminary. Lived the better part of the last decade in Albany.
While an Islanders fan, my hockey fandom is based in meeting many of the '94 Rangers at an Ice Hockey in Harlem event when I was 12 and going to games with my Rangers fan father. I was given a Gorton's Fisherman jersey for my birthday one year, wore it with pride and became an Islanders fan.
Unabashedly proud of my Norwegian, Scottish and German heritage.
I have supported Metro/NYRB through the good and (mostly) bad, from Lothar Matthaius to Tony Tchani. Metro for Life!

Exit Benn Olson
To Houston (Minny's AHL affiliate). Not terribly upset to see him go, he was kind of buried on the depth chart.
Exit Mikko Koskinen?
Report out of Finland that Mikko Koskinen is headed to SM-Liiga club KalPa. No word from the organization on this though.
Brock Nelson getting interviewed for UND's website last year. Interesting tidbit coming out, he passed up a year with Green Bay in the USHL last year to go to UND instead.
So this is more to ask a question for the LHH Universe: The Isles will be visiting the Wild on December 17th (A 7 PM Saturday night game). Would there be any interest in an Upper Midwest Isles get together at this game? Lemme know and we can organize if there is enough interest.
Rob Schremp Hockey takes his "talents" to Sweden
He'll play for MoDo, joining fell ex-Isles Freddy Meyer and Thomas "The Human Turnstile" Pock in Örnsköldsvik.
Jesse Joensuu Signs with HV71
Maybe you could have warned me you'd give up on the NHL before I defended you during the season. Enjoy Sweden.
Note: Free agency discussion continues in the next thread.
2011 NHL Draft Profile: Oskar Klefbom, the Other Big Swedish Defenseman
Editor's Note: As part of our series covering some lesser known 2011 prospects and/or guys who stand alone among their countrymen, we put a call in to Hanssen to handle some players from the land of his forefathers.
Howdy folks! I've been asked to come out of semi-retirement/hermitage by Dom to write a profile or two on guys from my area of expertise, The Great White North. So let's take a look at one of the prospects you might not have heard of but could wind up being a steal of the draft.
Odds are by the time the Isles get to pick, Adam Larsson, the stud Swedish defenseman and consensus #1 prize in the draft will be long gone. But if Garth Snow is jonesing for a large Swede to patrol the blueline in Nassau in the future, there is another option: Oskar (Or Oscar depending on who you talk to) Klefbom of Farjestad's senior and U18 team.
He's big. He's raw. He could wind up being one of the better defensemen taken in the draft. Or he could be Branislav Mezei 2.0. Lets take a closer look at the other big Swedish defenseman, the one with the name headline writers and commenters will come up with if he ever becomes a heavy hitter and also a built in nickname.
Djurgarden release Stefan Ridderwall
Looks like Garth made the right call not bringing him over last offseason.
Figren to Linkoping?
På Svenska. Figren's ELC is up at the end of the season and he will be an RFA. This season has been his best since going pro in 2008-2009. In short the article says Figren is frustrated that he hasn't been called up yet and if he isn't by the end of the season he will take his stick and go home. Literally. Linkoping seem to be the front runners for his services with Frolunda, AIK and Djurgarden also on the mix. Remember when Figren was with Djurgaren on loan during the 2008-2009 season, management was highly critical of both his attitude and work ethic, a trend that continued into his first season with Bridgeport last year. Has the bad attitude come back after he seemed to have turned his act around?
Katie Strang expects a call-up on defense. There was no early indication who that might be. Bingham gave the team tomorrow morning off, and they’re leaving for Manchester in the afternoon, so I assume any call-up will show himself in Philly before we hear about it.
Mike Fornabaio's Sounding Off. Please no Reese, please no Reese, please no Reese.
Video of Zenon Konopka's dressing room interview from earlier today. I think many Isles fans will be joining him in tearing down their Mario Lemieux posters when they get home.
Reese demoted (again)
He will be sorely missed... by the Isles opponents.
Poulin Starting Tomorrow @ Pittsburgh
Tweeteth the man himself (vie Strang).
In Defense of Jesse: Why You Shouldn't Give Up On Joensuu Quite Yet
So as Jesse Joensuu was recently demoted back to Bridgeport, several questions have been raised specifically about his future and what he needs to do to improve. Up front, yes I am a fan of Jesse Joensuu. I have been high on him since the Isles drafted him in the 2nd round of 2006. I have seen him develop over the previous two seasons in Bridgeport and the previous seasons in the SM-Liiga and World Junior Championships. I am a Jesse Joensuu apologist. I am his public defender. There, I said it. Deal with it.
The general feeling is time is running out for the 23 year old to make an impact on the organization. As the local Jesse Joensuu public defender, I've developed what basically has become the basis of this article out of my comments defending Joensuu. More specifically, I want to take a look at why it would be foolish now to give up on a 23 soon to be 24 year old Joensuu.
For this argument I will use a player correlation to Joensuu. I honestly don't like using correlaries for players as I think each individual player bring their own unique twist to the game that does not show up in the box score. I also know that the player I will use are not necessarily the same type of players that Joensuu is. My purpose in using the correlation is to show that there is still time for Joensuu to develop. So just to be clear, I am not saying he will turn into Frans Nielsen, Ville Leino, Jere Lehtinen or whomever else I use below, he will turn into Jesse Joensuu. Whatever that happens to be.

Islanders 2, Devils 5: Have you heard this one before? Slow start dooms Islanders.
Hello, My name is Mr. Hanssen. I'm your substitute teacher for this afternoon's game recap. Mr. Dominik Lighthouse-Hockey is away for the weekend. If you sit down and stay quiet we can get through this together.
Game Sum | Event Sum | H2H | Corsi | Recaps: NHL - ILWT - Isles
Well, let's just start off with that was not a pretty game. The recent trend of slow starts continued today first with Vlad Zharkov's first career NHL goal at 4:25 followed up a minute later by Ilya Kovalchuk's 13 of the year, a slap shot from the point on the power play. In what has been a troubling trend for Kevin Poulin early in his NHL career, he let up two early goals as he did against the Avalanche in his first NHL start and against the Senators in his previous start. three out of his four NHL starts, he has put his team in a deep hole early on. Whether it is rookie nerves, needing time to get comfortable, whatever it is, this is a learning edge that Poulin needs to work on.
As for the rest of the game, follow me after the jump for my thoughts, highlights and other brain droppings on this holiday Monday.
Jon Sim on Unconditional Waivers
Via the Isles official Twitter, Katie Strang and the Sound Tigers. Strang reports even if he clears, Sim will no longer be a member of the organization.
UPDATE - Reese waived as well.
[UPDATED] Jeremy Colliton Recalled; DiPietro Returns for Groin Eval
Via Strang, Fornabaio and the Isles official site. Unfortunately I think this is a sign that Frans might be more injured then they initially let on, otherwise why would you recall a defensive forward from Bridgeport?
[Update: Also, Isles say Rick DiPietro is headed back to L.I. early to have his groin injury evaluated.]
Islanders New Year's Resolutions
Well, its a new year. And a new year means a fresh start, a new begining, a blank page even if you're team currently sits 29th out of 30 NHL teams. As we welcome 2011, I thought I would take a look at what current and former Islanders have chosen for their New Years resolutions. So join me after the jump to see what some of our favorites have in store for the coming year! (Note: Everything that follows is sic-ed)

Mike, as a coach you were an unbelievable motivator
Regis "Pierre" McGuire to Mike Milbury during the first intermission of the Winter Classic, cementing his place at the worst, most oblivious hockey commentator in the history of the world.
De Haan good to go against Norway
So sayeth Bob McKenzie. Good news as the "lower body injury" isn't too serious.
Nordiques Fans Rally at Thrashers - Isles Game
Really Quebec? Could you be more obnoxious? Seriously though, where does Quebec rank on the list of possible cities? Definitely behind Winnipeg and Hamilton, probably behind Hartford as well. Stay classy Quebecois.
I know this is a bit old (2008), but it's comedian Jon LaJoie beating up a Flyers fan. I already liked him, he is now my new hero.
Tonight, Spurgeon was recalled by the Minnesota Wild and will join the team in Calgary, where he could make his NHL debut on Monday.
From the Wild's official site. Former Isles pick and reject Jared Spurgeon gets recalled from the AHL. To put this in perspective, as bad and as injured as the Isles have been, they haven't been reduced to calling up a 5'9" 20 year old reject of another organization to play defense.
Patrick Roy's CV
Seriously. Patrick Roy's CV from the Quebec Rempart's official site. I couldn't make this thing up if I wanted to.
Bailey took a hit in the first period, then felt a pull on a slap shot later in the first period. They’ll take a look at it Sunday, but it’s not supposed to be serious.
From Fornabaio after tonight's game in Hartford against the Connecticut Whale. Well, it better not be serious.
Blogger vs. MSM debate from The Score featuring James Mirtle, Damien Cox, Julian from PPP and Tyler Dellow. Man, Cox doesn't do himself any favors making himself look like the bitter, old coot he is.
Hat tip to Hockey Wilderness.
Fail Update: I can't embed this video for some reason. So the link is above...
PHX puts Prucha on waivers, CHI puts Garnett Exelby on, VAN puts Schaefer on $125 waivers for release purposes.
From Bob McKenzie's twitter. Either Exelby or Prucha interest anyone? They wouldn't hurt and Isles would only be picking up their salary (Prucha has a 1.2 mil cap hit).
The Price is Right! - Islanders Game-Worn Jersey Edition
So I was skimming through the MeiGray Group's Islanders game-word jersey selection the other day. It is pretty interesting, and the best place to pick up that Josh Bailey Game Worn Jersey you've had your eye on. But for every Bailey, Nielsen or Martinek there are a whole bunch of "Who? Who is that and when did he play for the Isles?" Many of these are from Preseason, not the regular season, and therefore many never actually saw time with the Isles. But there are some interesting ones...
Now, if you are interested, we have a decent short term distraction from the mess of the Isles season. So we're going to play "The Price is Right" and see if you can match up the asking price of each jersey.
#isles dman Mike Mottau will stay overnight in hospital again tonight; will remain in Atlanta "until further notice"
Per Katie Strang's Twitter. He apparently still has significant swelling around his eye and received stitches for the cut the puck made.
–The Free Chris Botta movement turned this into a hockey Thursday on WFAN. Not sure which was more entertaining: that, or that Mike Francesa insisted, even after a commercial break, that one of the Leafs took out Pierre Turgeon in 2002. Peca hurt, but losing Turgeon, forget about it.
