Gilmour's resume is thin compared to some of the other nominees, but then again, so was Clark Gillies'.

Sean Leahy over at Puck Daddy. I'm getting pretty tired of the Gillies bashing over there, whether its Wysh or Leahy. I know there are those in agreement with me on this.

The Danish: Really Canadians of Europe?

A look at the recent history shows Danish hockey on the rise, with a crop of emerging NHLers and a forefather in New York Islander Frans Nielsen's dad.

Chicago's Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith join Scott Niedermayer in 2002 with the Devils and Canda and Ken Morrow in 1980 with the Islanders and USA as the only hockey players to win the Stanley Cup and Olympic gold in the same season.

Quick NYRB vs. Dynamo Review

Well, thanks MGS... Having technical difficulties and showing  less then a half of  the total game, what turned out to be an exciting game, can really piss some people off, including the author....

Nilsson offered an entry-level contract?

2

A couple of Swedish news outlets are reporting that the Isles have offered Anders Nilsson a contract. This particular article quotes Nilsson as saying he is unsure as to accept the entry level deal or return for another year as Lulea's starter. With Mikko and Poulin on target for Bridgeport next year and Snow probably bringing in another vet keeper this contract offer is a bit surprising.

Ullstrom Signed (according to Swedish news outlet)

1

På Svenska. The article quotes his agent as saying he's been signed to an entry level. Per the transfer agreement, the Isles owe HV71 $225,000 in compensation as he was still under contract. Interestingly in another article, Ullstrom was asked if he would accept a loan back to HV71 if he didn't make the NHL roster. His response "it is not the question. No, this is it," My guess is a year or two in Bridgeport before he sees NVMC. Like JJ, I think the organization will take their time developing the big Swede.

Anyone want to do a gamethread for Metro vs. Columbus?

I would be willing but I know several of the regulars are season ticket holders and can't do it. Who would be around and want to do one?

Can New York support two teams? MLS re-opens negotiations over NY2

According to Brian Lewis in the NY Post, MLS Commissioner Don Garber has reopened negotiations with Mets Owners Jeff and Fred Wilpon over a second MLS franchise based in Queens. They've been down...

MLS re-opens negotiations on 2nd New York MLS Team

4

Via Brian Lewis of the NY Post. At one point this was thought to be dead but it looks like it's very much back on. As before it would be owned by Mets owners Jeff and Fred Wilpon, based in Queens with the proposed site across the street from Citi Field.

Wilpons and MLS re-open Negotiations about Queens-based Franchise

47

As discussed a couple of days ago, for the Wilpons its either the Isles or MLS and not both. Once thought to be dead, it looks like the Wilpons are back in serious discussions to purchase a second NY soccer franchise. Here's the quote from MLS commish Don Garber that has the biggest Islanders implications: bq. "They're still trying to figure out what they might be able to do with the land outside Citi Field. There are very few places to have a stadium in the New York metropolitan area; Queens is one of those prime locations and we'd love to see if we can try to make something work there.'' Basically he said they will build the stadium right where the arena for the Islanders would be. Discuss.

Staal Brother Reunion in Raleigh

Jared is joining Eric. The Hurricanes now own the rights to half the Staal brood.

Boyens named to New Zealand WC Squad

Via the Beeb. Good on Boyens. I know he's gotten some flak around here, but he's been a loyal soldier through good times (Finals appearance) and bad (Last year). He'll probably be the only Metro in South Africa too.

Norway and Germany Promoted to Next Year's IIHF U18 Tournament

5

Norway beat Denmark 5-4 in the Group A final and Germany beat Poland 10-0 in the final for Group B. Want to see a crazy scoreline? Norway's Sondre Olden had 7 goals and 15 Assists for 22 Points. In 5 games! I've mentioned it before, I think Olden would be a nice project draft pick late in the draft. he's big and has a ton of talent but is very very raw and would take a while to develop.

Provisional Team USA World Championship Roster

8

I know this is about a week old, but Kyle Okposo and Jack Hillen are among the first 12 named to the Team USA roster for the World Championships in Germany starting May 7th. More will be added as teams get eliminated from the playoffs (Joe Pavelski should be available for Gordo before all is said and done). JT is already set for Team Canada, Streit is all but guaranteed to be Captaining Switzerland again and I would imagine Bergenheim and Nielsen will be chosen for Finalnd and Denmark respectively. The Isles will have a strong contingent in Germany this spring. While it's not playoff hockey, should be good experience for the younger guys.

Hershey 4 - Bridgeport 3 OT

3

Bridgeport blew a 2 goal, 3rd period lead and wound up loosing in OT to Hershey in the 1st game of the AHL playoffs. Bridgeport had goals from Trevor Smith, Matt Martin and Andy MacDonald. MacDonald also had an assist on Martin's goal yet wound up a -1 as he was on the ice for 3 of Washington's 4 goals. Munroe saved 29 of 33 shots. Tough loss for Bridgeport, hopefully they can rebound in game 2.

Give proper doses of respect to kids like Brandon Gormley and cult hero Nino Niederreiter - a favorite of a lot of people who haven’t seem him play much, probably for his fun name and Swissness. But understand this: for a rebuilding team that thinks its arena prevents them from adding marquee talent, if you want to be a consistent contender there is a difference between the very top of this draft and the rest.

Botta in his recap of last night's game. I'm waiting for your response BC.

NHL and Sweden sign Transfer Agreement: What does this mean for the Islanders?

Odessa announced that Bridgeport has called up centerman Jean Bourbeau. The Sound Tigers also plan to sign defenseman Dustin Friesen, who was here in training camp, to a PTO. If they play, it’ll be the AHL debut for both.

Via Fornabaio, looks like things are getting a bit desperate across the sound with pretty much all of Bridgeport's defense now playing for the Isles and/or injured.

Six NHL clubs are reportedly after Mats Zuccarello Aasen, the Modo Hockey left-winger who won the Elitserien scoring title this season. This week he was also awarded the Golden Helmet as the Elitserien MVP voted by the players. He was the first Norwegian to win the honor and the first non-Swede since Jarmo Myllys, who won the Golden Helmet in 1997.

The Hockey News Eye on Europe. NHL just signed a new Transfer Agreement with the Sweden, so Zuccarello Aasen is cleared to come over to the NHL even though he has a year left on his MoDo contract. Previously he's been linked with Chicago and Detroit, but the Swedish and Norwegian press quoted his agent as saying he would only come to the NHL if he was given a 1-way deal. Critics have said he's too small, but he's bugger than Theo Fleury and the same size as ex-Canadian Mats Naslund. I don't think the Isles are or should be interested.
