Pirates Acquire Wandy Rodriguez From Astros; Robbie Grossman, Rudy Owens, Colton Cain Go To Houston

This is being confirmed by multiple sources on Twitter. Alen Hanson was pulled from his game in West Virginia in the first inning. If related, I'd expect it to be a one-for-one with a lot of money...

Jason Kendall Ends Comeback, Retires

Well, that was short-lived. From Charlie: Due to injuries, Kendall hadn't played since 2010, and he was trying to make his way back while playing in the Royals system. That appears to be over, though, and Kendall has retired. He finishes his career with a .366 on-base percentage and 2,195 career hits, 1,409 of which came with the Pirates.

Rob Neyer Checks In On The Pirates

Rob wrote an article around a tweet I posted earlier today. I wasn't so much looking to be "discouraging," as to point out that the anniversary of the Jerry Meals game is this Thursday.

International League Piece On Starling Marte

Basically a puff piece, but what I found interesting is that Indians broadcaster Will Fleming serves as Marte's interpreter.

Yawn, Pirates Win Again. Sweep Marlins. Now 14 Over .500

Break 'em up! The Pirates beat the Miami Marlins 3-0 today at PNC Park, swept the series for their fourth sweep of the season and won their fifth game in a row for the first time this year. This is...

Marlins Vs. Pirates, 22 July 2012

The Pirates take a major league-best 31-14 home record in to today's game as they look to make it five in row at PNC Park at 1:35. The Bucs have won four in a row five times this season, but have...

Pirates Win Fourth Straight, Beat Marlins 5-1; Remain 0.5 Game Out Of First

The 5th largest crowd in the history of PNC Park, 39,411, saw the Pirates win again, defeating the Miami Marlins 5-1. The Pirates got off to a quick start as Alex Presley walked to open the home...

Jose Tabata Dogging It In AAA?

According to an article by John Perrotto at least one National League scout thinks so: "'He's dogging it,' one scout from a National League organization said. 'He is jogging down the line when he hits a ground ball. He looks completely disinterested, even more disinterested than when he was in the major leagues. You don't have to watch him long to realize he doesn't want to be there.'" Not good.

Pirates Recall Evan Meek, Juan Cruz To The 15-Day DL

The PIrates have recalled right-handed reliever Evan Meek from AAA Indianapolis and placed right-handed reliever Juan Cruz on the 15-day DL, retroactive to July 18, with inflammation in his right...

Interviews With Neal Huntington And Altoona Curve Players

I spoke to Neal Huntington for about 30 minutes this morning and then went up to Altoona and talked to Victor Black, Robbie Grossman (here) and Kyle McPherson (here). The player interviews run...

Keith Law Reviews Pelotero

On his personal blog, Keith Law reviews the documentary Pelotero. The doc looks at how MLB mines young talent in the Dominican Republic. MIguel Sano is one of the players featured. Rene Gayo was the PIrates scout recruiting Sano and has a major role in the film as a result. "MLB and Gayo come off as the villians of the Sano story..." according to Law.

Tim Alderson Goes On The DL

The Curve have placed right-handed starting pitcher Tim Alderson on the disabled list with an elbow injury. Alderson was hit hard in his last time out giving up eight earned runs in 2.2 innings. While in Altoona yesterday I had asked to speak with Tim but was told he was unavailable. I gather this is the reason.

Is Kevin Correia Morphing Into Jake Peavy?

I really don't know what to make of this. Kevin Correia has 11 strikeouts in his last 11 innings after recording just 35 in his first 91.1 innings of the season. Kristy Robinson writes that Correia...

Interview With Neal Huntington

I am hosting the show today in 970 ESPN (listen here) from Altoona. Victor Black, Robbie Grossman and Kyle McPherson will be joining me between 4-5. I also did a 25 minute interview with Neal Huntington this morning and it will air at 5:30. I will link to it here after it plays. Starling Marte is not in Pittsburgh tonight and it didn't sound as if it a promotion was imminent, judging from our conversation.

Rick Ankiel DFA'd By Nationals -- Could He Be A Good Fit For Pirates?

I don't know whether the Pirates are interested or not, but they certainly should be making a bunch of phone calls and looking at recent video. Ankiel is no longer a good player, but he would be an...

Apparently It's Ex-Pirate Day Around MLB

The Royals signed Jason Kendall to a minor league contract and he will report to AA and play tomorrow. Really? Kendall is 38 and last played in the majors in the 2010. The Reds recalled Xavier Paul who they recently signed after he was granted free agency by the Washington Nationals. Paul has been good in AAA this season posting a .918 OPS and hitting nine homers in 238 at bats. He pinch hit last night. The Chicago White Sox recalled lefthanded reliever Donnie Veal. I had reasonably high hopes for Veal. In 43.1 IP he posted 53 strikeouts in AAA this year. He appeared in 19 games with the Bucs in 2009. Update (by Vlad): In keeping with the theme, Kris and Anna Benson are filing for divorce (again).

Is Pedro Alvarez The 3rd Best Defensive Third Baseman?

This article is about Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie who went over the rail yesterday in an insane attempt to catch a foul ball (video). But in listing the best defensive third sackers it has Pedro tied for third. The list is interesting in that Lawrie, Wright and Moustakas are all seen as excellent defensive third basemen. Chipper and Pedro, umm, not so much.

Interview With Jim Callis

Yesterday I discussed Mark Appel, the competitive balance lottery, Starling Marte and the trade deadline with Baseball America's Jim Callis.

Recent Interviews With Keith Law, Tim Williams & Charlie Wilmoth

There were some technical difficulties getting these posted, I apologize. They all run about 15-20 minutes. Keith and I spoke Thursday, Tim and I on Friday and Charlie rocked it on Monday. I'll have Pirates pitching coach Ray Searage join me from Denver today at 5 p.m. You can listen here or on 970 ESPN in Pittsburgh.

Joey Votto Will Have Knee Surgery, Out 3-4 Weeks

The Cincinnati Reds announced today that first baseman Joey Votto has a torn meniscus in his left knee and will undergo arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday. Votto suffered the injury in June when...

Pirates Front And Center On ESPN.com Baseball Page

I'm mentioned a bunch of times this month that if the Pirates continue to play well, the national media coverage is going to grow exponentially. And they can't write everystory about Andrew...

Excellent Analysis Of Justin Upton

Great piece on the Sweet Spot blog on ESPN.com. This is why scouting is incredibly important. The Pirates have to ask whether Upton's issues are fixable and worth dealing for. Tough questions, tough answers. 15 days until the deadline.

Nick Cafardo Suggests Pirates May Have Interest In Jon Lester

I'm not sure I'd attach much significance to this. Sure the Pirates would inquire, but that is just Neal Huntington doing his job. Lester is due $11.6 million next year and there is a team option for $13 million in 2014. Cafardo suggests the Sox would want someone like Gerrit Cole in return. Not happening. Cafardo also mentions the Pirates potential interest in Hamels, Greinke, Dempster and Garza in the same note, so he has covered all the bases.

Dan Szymborski Simulates The Second Half

Dan, an occasional commenter on the site, runs a projection of the year-end standings. All standings were projected a million times, using a Monte Carlo simulation along with the ZiPS projection system that he created. (ESPN Insider subscription req.) The projection shows the Pirates finishing 86-76, with a 22.6% chance of winning the division and a 50.6% chance of making the playoffs. In this simulation, they miss the second wild card spot by one game. Here is what is really interesting, Dan assumes that two wins represents a rough gauge of what acquiring a star would net a team and one win is about what a team can gain by bringing in an above-average player. "...the Bucs' playoff odds would jump 14 percentage points with the addition of two wins, which is the largest in baseball." A big 17 days ahead for Neal Huntington.

Pirates Vs. Brewers, 13 July 2012

Finally. Let the games begin. The Pirates open the second half looking to change the history of the past twenty years. If you had Drew Sutton opening the second half as the team's leadoff hitter...

Keith Law's Midseason Top 50

Keith Law updates his Top 50 Prospects (subscription required). Gerrit Cole checks in at 7 and Jameson Taillon at 10. Alen Hanson is the only other Pirate on the list, ranked at 48. Byron Buxton,...

Blue Jays Sign Edwin Encarnacion To Extension

A 3-year, $27 million deal with a club option for $10. Jonah Keri tweets, "Whoa! There goes would-be best hitter on the trade market." Encarnacion certainly would have been an interesting fit for the Pirates.

CBSSports.com Takes Their Turn To Look At The 'Unbelievable, And Still Underrated, Andrew McCutchen'

Upset about Cutch not getting enough love last night during the Home Run Derby? The national "print" media is certainly doing their part.

Andrew McCutchen's HR Pitch Chart & Spray Chart Is A Thing Of Symmetrical Beauty

Yesterday Cutch was named National League Player of the Week. Again. If they gave first half awards, he'd certainly be on the short list for MVP. These charts are amazing. Want power from all parts in the strike zone? Check. What to use the whole park, power to all fields? Check. What a first half.

Giants Vs. Pirates, 7 July 2012

The Pirates, winners of eight of their last ten, will send their two aces to the hill this weekend as they look to head into the All-Star break on a high note. Today 27-year old righthander James...
