More Epstein: Theo talks Castro on Waddle and Silvy

Theo had a lot of praise for Starlin, raving about what all he's done at such a young age and how he has an "immense" ceiling. What I found interesting was what he said about Castro's defense. A lot of people think Castro would be better suited moving off of SS to 2B, 3B, or even CF. I've been adamant about keeping Castro at SS, and sounds like Theo isn't too worried about Castro's defense as of now. "When Derek Jeter was just about the same age he made 56 errors in the low minor leagues," Epstein said. "[With] defense especially there is maturation that only comes with time and experience." Hearing this from Theo really makes me confident that the Cubs are gonna stick with Starlin at SS for the long term. As Theo said, he's got all the physical tools. It's just a matter of repetition and good coaching for him to reach his defensive ceiling. Theo also talks about Soriano, among other things, saying "there's more there" and talks about getting maximum value out of every player. Waddle and Silvy podcast

Aramis happy with Epstein hiring, open to return

But does Theo want him back? I'm guessing we spend elsewhere and see Lemahieu at 3B next year.

More Epstein rumors: Red Sox don't want Epstein to bring along top aides from Boston

Epstein-fest rolls on. Whether or not Epstein can bring along some of his top people may depend on the amount of compensation we give up. If Jackson is the difference in whether or not we get some of Epstein's "top aides", would you be willing to pull the trigger? I still think Brett is here to stay, but maybe Szczur and McNutt aren't so safe anymore?

Cubs evaluating list of players for Theo compensation

Apparently Ricketts has given a list of players to Bush, Wilken, and Flieta to "evaluate" and decide on who they are comfortable with giving up.

Aramis on the odds that he returns next year

Doesn't look to good on the ARam front for those of us who want him back, according to this article on the cubs.com. When asked if Tuesday was his last home game: "Probably. There's a good chance. I'm a free agent, and right now I don't know what's going to happen. It looks like I'm going to hit the market." Other interesting quotes from Aramis: "It doesn't look that way right now. We haven't heard anything from the front office." "We don't have a GM, so I don't know who to talk to," "My agent's in town, but we haven't heard from anybody. I think we're ready to move on."

LaHair and Beliveau are Cubs minor league player and pitcher of the year.

I'm a big fan of both of these guys, but it's kind of disheartening when the minor league pitcher and player of the year are a reliever and a 28 year old in his sixth stint in AAA. I know these awards are pretty meaningless and don't really reflect where these guys rank as prospects, but it's still shows the lack of SP we have at the upper levels.

Cashner to pitch in the Arizona Fall League

good to hear that the plan is to stretch him out in preparation to start in 2012. Hopefully 2012 can be what 2011 was supposed to be for Andrew.

Brett Jackson callup unlikely?

Muskat talking about September callups. Right after talking about Quade wanting a look at Bryan LaHair, she says that a promotion is unlikely for both Trey McNutt and Brett Jackson. McNutt isn't really a surprise, but I'm gonna be pretty upset if LaHair is up in September and Jackson isn't. If this is pure speculation by Carrie then I would take it with a grain of salt, but by the sound of Q it sounds like more than just a guess. "You can talk about the Jacksons and some of the other people we're excited about, some of the younger players, but I'd like to see guys here who are ready to be here and ready to be taking a serious look at," Quade said.

Aramis repeats he will block any trade.

So much for dealing our most valuable trade chip. At least we know we'll have him next year, hopefully paired with a shiny new toy at 1B.

Cubs to work out Gretzky's son.

Thought this was a interesting read, Trevor Gretzky will work out in Arizona for Cubs scouts Saturday. I was wondering if any of our draft guys know much about him as a player? What kind of player is he? Any idea of what range he may be selected in?

ESPNs franchise player draft

ESPN gathered 30 baseball "experts" to do a fantasy draft in which they build their team around one player. Starlin Castro was picked 19th by Jerry Crasnick, and Tulo was picked number one overall by Ravech.

Bubba Starling says he'll be enrolling in classes come July...

Bubba says he'll be in Lincoln come July 10, but the door is still open for him to be drafted and signed. Any chance these comments make him fall, especially if a more small market team doesn't think they can get a deal done?

MLB wants discipline for DUI offenses in new CBA

Many here have called for discipline for DUIs, and we may just get our wish.

Brandon Guyer promoted

It was mentioned in the minor league wrap up, but I know not everyone is going to read the comments. Guyer was batting .356 with 6 HR for the Durham Bulls.

Barney gets the opening day nod

Rest of the lineup also in the article. Good to see them giving Darwin a chance, hopefully he can take the starting role (at least vs righties) away from DeWitt full time.

Muskat indicates there's still competition for the backup catcher...

While many here think Hill making the roster is a forgone conclusion, Carrie says the backup catcher is still to be decided. Kinda thought this was the case considering the cuts today didn't include Beef or MaxRam. I'm glad to hear this from Carrie considering how close she is with the organization. Quote: "All that's left to be decided is the fifth spot in the rotation plus the bullpen and the identity of the backup catcher, which is down to Koyie Hill, Welington Castillo and Max Ramirez. Ramirez has been slowed by a sore left wrist; an MRI on Wednesday was negative. "

Nationals and Yankees scouting Silva.

Maybe there is hope to trade him?
