Pension Plan Puppets The Komisarek Kountdown

Hey there folks, Death_By_Leafs checking in again after a somewhat looooong hiatus. The events of the last few days have given me the itch again to read & talk Leafs as we lead into the pre-season, wide-eyed and optimistic. I mean, my goodness, Lebdalebdalebda is no more!

(Sidebar: I looked through my history to see when I was last on. My last comments here included such prophetical gems as:
"Godamnit Lebda"
"lebda you are suck."
"'I don’t know what Lebda was doing' -Greg Millen; Dec 16, 2010 <-- Thank you for saying what we are all thinking. All the time.")

So after last night's trade, many analysts have made mention that Toronto Maple Leaf Cody Franson now gives a Top 6 with some combination of Phaneuf, Liles, Aulie, Franson, Gunnarsson, and Schenn (assuming he is re-signed without incident). With the additional upstart group led by Blacker, Gardiner, and others, the poor cap casualty known as Mike Komisarek -- barring any major rebirth of his game -- will clearly be the odd man out.

So I decided to try and math my way into seeing when we might see the end of Komisarek in a Maple Leaf uniform. Based on Komisarek's salary structure, he can become attractive to poor teams once his cash obligation drops below his remaining cap hit.

Salary 2011-2012 = $5.5m
Salary 2012-2013 = $3.5m
Salary 2013-2014 = $3.5m

Cap 2012-2013 = $4.5m
Cap 2013-2014 = $4.5m

The 2011-2012 season runs from for 185 days (Oct 6 to Apr 7), which means Komisarek's daily salary is $29,729.73. Thus, after 118 days, Komisarek will have been paid $3,508,108.11 leaving $1,991,891.89 remaining for the year.

$1,991,891.89 + $3,500,000.00 + $3,500,000.00 = $8,991,891.89, which is the first day that the remaining salary obligations to Komisarek will be less than his $9 million cap over the final 2 seasons.

That day, #118, will be January 31, 2012.

Now I'm not saying I'm desperate to get rid of the guy, and I'm not saying that he can't be a worthwhile player for an NHL team, but I think most of us will agree that Komisarek has not fit the role that was assumed when he was signed. However, if we are expecting Komisarek to be dumped off for little return, this is the earliest it will probably happen.

As always, Go Leafs Go.

Pension Plan Puppets How Other Teams are Built

Edited to now include all relevant teams

The point of this piece is to once again offer evidence that the way to building a steady playoff hopeful is not solely accomplished through Top 5 draft picks. That the mentality of coming in last until you find a Crosby or Ovechkin or Stamkos is a falsehood perpetrated by people who are ignorant of what it takes to actually shape a top-level NHL team. Instead, they choose to rehash the same argument over and over despite the clear lack of payoff in draft history, and the refusal to examine how most of the top teams are assembled.

Pension Plan Puppets Why "truculence" matters.

We require, as a team, proper levels of pugnacity, testosterone, truculence and belligerence.

That's how our teams play.

People seem to mock the 'truculence' aspect of hockey as some poor reflection on Brian Burke, and hint at it being a source of failure for his young regime.

Sandpaper is important. So is having the physical nature ready to back it up.

Let me explain why:

Pension Plan Puppets Brian Burke's True Rebuild

Brian Burke was brought in to build the Toronto Maple Leafs into a Stanley Cup contender.

How has he progressed?
What pieces do we still need?
And how many decades will this 7-game losing streak set us back?? (spoiler: None)

Pension Plan Puppets DRAFT SCHMAFT, Stop talking about it!

Seriously. I'm sick of hearing people talk about the picks we lost and the "dynasty" that we've given the Bruins.

Fact: we didn't give up all that much, and we're still ahead in the trade.

See below for the explanation...

Saturdays at home are boring without Leaf games. Who cares about the rest of the league?

If anyone was worried about Beach fitting into the room, I think you can put that to bed. He's got swagger.

Although all of these guys still seem doughy in the face, except for Gudbranson - who also looks like he's 9 ft tall...

Thanks for ditching us both and joining the most insufferable team possible. Jeffler summed it all up nicely a month ago in his letter to Bill.

Transactions of the Day - June 24

Montreal has not tendered an offer to Pouliot; do we have interest in him?
San Jose has re-signed Marleau and Pavelski; what does that mean for the current free agent crop, and is Setoguchi on the squeeze?

Pension Plan Puppets PPP Dictionary: 1967

Editor's Note: Death_by_Leafs e-mailed me this suggestion for the PPP Dictionary and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Hope you folks do as well. Rather than look upon 1967 as a burden, it should be seen as a badge of honour. It's no mean feat to stick with your team through thick and thin in a city where you are constantly told that you are defective for doing so. The time may come, it may not, but the drought is not a reflection on our quality as fans. There are none better. End of.

0_medium

This is for anyone who thinks they can put us down anymore with the slur of '1967', uh-uh. Game over. You have no right to use it. That's our word now and only we can call each other that. We're taking it back.

For many years, this particular arrangement of numerals has caused the average Leaf fan to get a lump in their throat and a tear in their eye. Our frustration has been noticed by our opponents - ranging from our traditional rivals in La Belle Province to such hypothetical hockey markets as Ottawa - and has become a catchphrase of mockery. Even misanthropic local newspaper writers revel in the joyless vaccuum that has caved-in the hearts of the Leaf faithful.

But after Chicago's 2010 Stanley Cup victory, we have been passed the dubious crown of longest drought. Well, in echoing the sentiments of other users on this site, I don't wish to merely accept this distinction. This number has changed for me. I will embrace it and I will revel in it.

Second City Hockey Congrats from a Toronto Toews fan

What a great end to a great playoffs. As a Leafs fan, I watched the playoffs without a preferred team, but rather with a hope that I could watch some great players make some magic in the clutch.

Coming into the playoffs, I was unsure at how this Blackhawks team would deal with the pressure of no longer being the upstart youngsters, but rather legitimate contenders. Turns out it really only took one uneasy game vs. Nashville for this team to remember exactly what their mission was when they started out last October.

Pension Plan Puppets How To Actually Draft

(This can be read on its own, or you can ponder it in connection with the general angst felt about the loss of the Kessel Picks.)

How to draft

For your consideration, I submit a list of players drafted outside of the top half of the first round. Where drafting can really build your team is in the meat & potatoes rounds. So lets look at the top 60 players picked every year (give or take the end of the round), excluding players from the middle of the 1st round or above. On recent years, this will be approx #15-60, and in older years this was #11-60 (as there were only 21 teams in the league).

Pension Plan Puppets STOP WHINING ABOUT THE KESSEL PICKS

Kessel is going to be a great player, potting 35-45 goals a season. He's only 22 years old.

Two picks that are going to be turned into 18 year-olds who may or may not play in the next 3 or 4 years, and may or may not be worthwhile NHLers, are no reason to become despondent.

Pension Plan Puppets Kaberle out to pasture? Maybe not...

Some Leaf fans are on the fence whether or not to re-sign Tomas Kaberle next summer, or if Burke should try and trade him for future value (picks/prospects/Jeff Carter... sigh..)

One line of thought is that Kaberle is in his prime now, and by the time the team is ready to do some playoff damage, he will no longer be a contributor. Sound logic... or is it?

I decided to do a quick check of point contribution by defencemen compared to their age. I thought 9 seasons (from '99-'00 to '08-'09) would be a fairly good range of seasons to draw upon -- 5 years pre-lockout and the 4 years since.

Pension Plan Puppets Goaltending State of the Union

With the Toskala countdown entering the final 12 weeks, I wonder what's next for the Blue&White in net.

What is the standard of goaltending in the NHL, and what should we hope for from The Burkie? The Monster is a given as our developing/B-goalie, but who should share time with him next season? And how much of a difference will being Toskala-Free mean to our team?

Pension Plan Puppets Tamper Your Kids to Work Day!! (RFAs)

As the sister post to my UFA signing options, I wonder which RESTRICTED free agents might slip through the cracks and end up on the market. Granted, we can't threaten offer sheets and we don't have that much in the cupboard to trade, but if wishes were dollars, what would you buy?

Pension Plan Puppets Summer Jobs Available!! (Free Agency Lists)

As the Leafs lose another game against one of the conference's top teams, my thoughts turn to warmer days when BB and the braintrust might uprade our team with whatever is out there (found from nhlnumbers.com).
The team definitely needs to get better, so who do you think the Leafs should go after?
