I am playing fantasy baseball for the first time this year and am much too cheap to pay for Baseballhq.com or BaseballProspectus.com. Any help out there from fellow Cards fans on sites which you guys might recommend for accurate fantasy baseball news, rankings, stats, etc. that use sabermetric statistical analyses as a basis for player recommendations as opposed to just a "gut feel" or "man-love" for a particular player?

Or am I relegated to pay sites?

Thanks,

The Nationals failed to sign first-round draft pick Aaron Crow before Friday's midnight deadline.
The two sides were reportedly between $700,000 and $900,000 apart. If Crow's changeup develops, he could be a solid No. 2 in the majors, but for now he'll play with the independent league Fort Worth Cats. The Nationals will get a compensatory pick for their failure to sign Crow.

Along with inquiring about Josh Fogg of the Reds and Julian Tavarez of the Red Sox, the Rockies have asked the Cardinals about Anthony Reyes.

From Rotoworld.com: Reyes remains available, but the price will be substantial. Among the prospects the Cardinals could ask about are outfielder Dexter Fowler and infielders Chris Nelson and Hector Gomez.

One ranking I saw of the Rockies' prospects had SS Nelson at #3, SS Gomez at #4, and OF Fowler at #5. I would obviously hope for Nelson, who is a power-hitting IF and blocked by Tulowitzki and his long-term contract.

Just throwing this out for discussion as I am in no way advocating breaking up our first place team (please note tongue-in-cheek).

From Rotoworld:

"According to the Houston Chronicle, Giants GM Brian Sabean said on his
weekly radio show that he is looking to acquire a left-handed first
baseman.

The newspaper reports that the Giants have had internal discussions
about the Nationals' Nick Johnson, but that doesn't make a whole lot of
sense. Johnson has locked up the everyday first base job in Washington
and has been great so far this season. The Braves' Scott Thorman, who
is at Triple-A right now, was named as another possibility and is more
realistic. The Giants must have no faith in 26-year-old Dan Ortmeier,
who continues to be benched in favor of Rich Aurilla."
My question is this: is Duncan someone we would consider in a deal like this, and do the Giants even have any assets worth receiving in return? Am I remembering correctly Duncan played 1b in the minors? If so, I would suggest we look at young 2b prospect Eugenio Velez, who has a ton of speed. Not sure how well he has hit in the minors, but the Giants are high on him (they are probably high on anyone with a pulse not named B Bonds though....).
But I think Velez and one-time big-time prospect Merkin Valdez would be nice candidates to come back to the Cardinals.
Just a thought, as I don't know who'd take Duncan's place on the roster. And you could argue we don't need more SP/RP, although I would argue back we can never have enough pitching.
I am sure this would never happen, just imagining Velez's speed at the top of our lineup.
Baseball Video Game: OOTP8

The recent post on MLB2k8 and EA's The Show got me wondering...... I am a big video baseball geek and have wasted many, many, many, many, many hours not just playing the actual games, but updating rosters, creating the most realistic players as possible, etc.

I am currently demo'ing the latest version of Out of the Park Baseball, the 08 version.

http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/cms/index.php?page=ootp-baseball

I have downloaded a 2007 MLB roster pack mod and have tried to make our Cardinals as realistic as possible. Curious if anyone else out there plays OOTP8 and has done the same? I like the fact I can manage the entire St Louis organization, but noticed these roster "mods" (which are done by OOTP fans and are not actual OOTP releases) don't always do the best job when it comes to individual franchises. Don't get me wrong--these dudes put a ton of time into their efforts. But other than Rasmus and a few other prospects, they really don't offer much for our Cards. But with the ability to create and edit players, I hope to eventually get "my" Cardinals dialed in as well as possible.

The roster mod I used is from Padresfan's OOTP mod site, I think the actual roster mod is by Cubbyfan.

I never "force" trades unless it has actually happened (Glaus/Rolen), but I was able to get Neshek from the Twins for J Encarnacion. That helped to shore up my middle relievers.

A Marte?

I was advocating pursuing Carlos Quentin after last season. 2nd pick in the fiirst round of the 2003 draft but had fallen out of favor in Arizona. Considered the heir apparent to Shawn Green in RF for the Diamondbacks, Quentin never did claim the job and fought injury problems in 2007 if memory serves.

On December 3rd, 2007, Quentin was traded to the Chicago White Sox for minor league first baseman Christopher Carter, who played for the low class A Kannapolis Intimidators in 2007 and was considered one of the best White Sox prospects. Not sure what we could have offered Ari to get him, but I thought it was worth a shot.

What I'm getting at here is it seems Andy Marte is following the same path. Considered the Braves 3b of the future, he never was able to grab the job, primarily because of some guy named Chipper. Traded to Boston, then again to Cleveland Now there is talk he has fallen out of favor with the Indians as well.

Seems like he's exactly the kind of player the Cards should take a chance on.Talented, very good defensively, can swing the bat. But for various reasons, injuries, etc., hasn't been able to get the PT to stick with a big club.

http://www.minorleaguenews.com/baseball/affiliated/aaa/international/bisons/articles2006/05/10/01.html

Asked to review Andy Marte's spring performance thus far, manager Eric Wedge said, "He's had good days and bad days."

This from Rotowire.com:
Marte
is out of options, so the Indians must either keep him on the 25-man
roster, trade him or risk losing him on waivers. The one-time prospect
has seen his stock drop dramatically over the past couple years and has
not impressed during camp. "I think he's been a little tentative
defensively," Wedge said. "He's shown signs offensively. I want to see
him be more consistent with his offense and defense." Other than that,
he's been great.

Wonder what it would take to get him and where he would slot on the 3b depth chart. Sounds like a perfect "buy low" candidate to me.

BallPark Village

As is obvious from my name, I am currently a resident of Denver, CO. I do love it out here, the weather is amazing. Denver is a first class city, not too big, not too small, but feels just right. For those of you who have attended a game at Coor's, then ventured out into the Lower Downtown (LODO) area afterwards, it really is a beautiful setting for a ballpark. Easy access to both major interstates, with a downtown Mall shuttle, regional bus station, and a major light rail station all nearby within walking distance. Lots of bars, restaurants, etc all within walking distance of the ballpark as well.

I spent my early years (high school and college) in the St Louis area. Graduate of Belleville East. I have always considered myself somewhat of an urban architecture-transportation planning geek, so the downtown St Louis area of my youth was a major disappointment. The old addage of "rolling up the sidewalks" at night was quite appropriate. I hung out on the Landing a lot, especially Sundeckers and Mississippi Nights, but the area around Busch was a waste. Although I do remember blowing a crapload of money at the Broadway Oyster Bar, but i digress....

All this being said, the idea and inclusion of the Ballpark Village concept was one I thought of as vitally important to the overall plan of the new Busch Stadium. So can someone please explain to me why all the problems? What happened between those initial planning stages, the Opening of the new park and now? I am most curious. I would imagine financing issues are probably part of the problem. I will go search online a little more.

But as someone who visited Denver in the mid-80's and who is now a current resident, I can't express strongly enough the impact Coor's Field and a Light Rail system that actually goes where the people need it to have made on the city of Denver. Downtown Denver was vacant railroad yards and warehouses. Now it is a vibrant, urban city with a thriving downtown area. And Coor's Field was a huge proponent of the change. My only hope is St Louis can turn the BPV concept into a reality, one that benefits the people of St Louis City and County.

For those urban planning geeks like myself, check out http://www.denverinfill.com/. Neat site, gives a great account of the area around Coor's.
