MVP Retrospective and WAR
The next piece done by my co-author at our site looks at MVPs and has a little Ranger focus since a few Rangers have won the MVP. Sadly Juan Gone's 1996 win was one of the worst selections in recent history.
All in all the BBWAA seems to get MVPs correct right around 50% of the time (according to bWAR).
Meta-Analysis of NL Gold Glove accuracy
Using defensive WAR components I looked at the accuracy of the BBWAA at awarding every NL Gold Glove in an overall and position-by-position manner.
Summary: 50% of all NL GGs are way off base and second base and outfield are the least accurate positions.
First ST Game Recap (Warning: photos and video ahead)
Since I live the desert year round (hence the name) I had the luxury of driving up to Surprise this morning to catch the Rangers game against KC and see all our old favorites and some young guns play for about 6 outs.
I took some photos and video of the occasion which are after the jump with a recap of the day.

New site: Deadballers
I don't post a whole lot here (more of lurker/tied down with work) but I feel fairly comfortable here as part of the community. I wanted to link a site that both myself and a good friend of mine started that goes in to basic baseball discussions, hall of fame stuff, and what we call preposterous facts. We are calling the site Deadballers, and we use High Pockets Kelly and Ducky Medwick as alter egos.
Hall of Fame pieces are typically just recaps of careers and where they stand in history as we weren't alive for a vast majority of them.
Anyways, if anyone wants to give the site a read and offer some feedback or writing suggestions it would be much appreciated. Currently there are pieces up on Dale Murphy, Bert Blyleven, Michael Young, and a few brief facts of the day.
Thanks, and Go Rangers!

Rob Neyer on Michael Young
That was fast:

Just posted a quick recap of a discussion with Posnanski and how Neyer thought MY was the best player in the AL West. Interesting read.

Howard Bryant article on Rangers
Good article overall, with my favorite being:
""I'm not stupid," Washington said. "Those guys over there, they're the defending champs. They have 40 [expletive] pennants. But what I try to tell our guys is that it doesn't matter who is better. All we have to do is be better on that day. The best team doesn't always win. The team that is better on that day is the one that wins. Be that team.""
I think I would love to play for Ron Washington.
I haven't seen in a mantis in years (I don't remember the last time, honestly) and did not know they actually lived in the Arizona desert. But I found this guy outside my house tonight.
I think he's getting a head start for the west coast road trip we are about to start.
Working on a team defense statistic
I am by no means an accomplished statistician, much less a sabermetrician, but I do like to dabble in statistics and pitch f/x material. For the past 2 years, I've tinkered with the idea of creating something that tries to quantify how much work a defense is doing out in the field. Quite simply, all pitching (among other factors) is not created equal; that's the mantra I've let guide my work. I know there's lots of other materials out there (UZR, +/-, etc.), some that I know about fairly well, others not so much, that try to quantify defense in a much more sophisticated manner. I think it's possible, however, to get a much simpler view of how much work a team is doing out in the field.
I'll post what I've come up with so far, but this is also a call for ideas, thoughts, etc. If you think what I'm doing is pointless, please feel free to say it, I won't be offended.
