TODAY IS THE DAY
Today is the day you dream of as a player and you live for as a fan. Today is the day that all other days come down to. Two teams have played their hearts out and eliminated all other obstacles. 60 minutes is all that stands between them and supreme greatness. For one team it is redemption and a chance to erase the failures of yester. For another it is a chance to remain kings of their domain, to show once more that this is no fluke, no politics, only destiny and domination. The last peg in the stronghold of what could be the last true dynasty of our era. Only in hockey can a team made up of mostly foreign soldiers fight for the hearts of Americans not only in the motor city but the world over. The closest thing you'll find today to such a spectacle is the armed forces. Obviously the two fail in true comparison but resemble each other strongly in what they stand for in the people who rely on them daily just to get by. Today is the day that our Detroit Red Wings fight not only for their fifth Stanley Cup in 12 years but for the pride of a city and state, that recently has fallen on extremely hard times.
Another Stanley Cup for this town is possibly the last chapter they need to complete their dynasty. Another chapter that shows that even when down and beaten up a little heart can go along way. Quite possibly just the reminder the great city of Detroit needs to keep them going, so they are able to rise above the recent hardships. For me the true essence of what today means runs deep for family and friends. My late Grandpa Joe graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in engineering and went on to work for GM for many many years. As where my Grandpa Don was a season ticket holder at the old Olympia stadium and then at the Joe up until he permanently moved to Florida a few years ago. Through out his early experiences he somehow was able to become good friends with some of Detroit's elite players. Including Mr. Hockey Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsay, Sid Abel, Terry Sawchuck, Bill Gatsby just to name a few. My father also got the chance to play for the Saginaw Generals, Red Wing's farm club at the time. He was also able to participate in the Stars on Ice program at the infamous Lake Placid sports complex. This meant he not only got to eat, sleep, learn from the greats but got to skate and play alongside and against them.

Mike Modano introduction/press conference LIVE NOW!!
Red Wings and Co. introduce Mo to Motown. Very weird to see him not wearing green, let alone in a Red Wings jersey.
Off-season hockey oasis!!
For those of us going through hockey withdrawal right now.. during the always boring hockey-less summer
Steve Yzerman to GM for Lightning?
Saw this interesting article dismorning on my local paper's site... thought it might be of some interest. Being born in Saginaw and living in Florida for most my life...going to Tampa games, I happen to be both a Bolts and Wings fan. My true love lays in Detroit though, of course. So can't help but to have some mixed emotions on this possible move. On one hand I think it couldn't be a better move for the Lightning and am all for it. On the other hand I have always imagined Stevie Y staying in Detroit for life. I don't know what to think...
Feel bad for even posting this at such a crucial time in the year, but didn't want it to go without mention. Guess I'm just not going to worry about this 'till the off-season. Until then we've got a Cup to get back and their's chum in the water!!
GO WINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another 13 game night, not a single one on Versus?
I was going to do a post about this subject the other night, but now that it's happened again... it feels absolutely necessary. What could possibly be Bettman's play on this one? Having so many games in one night (again) unlike in past seasons and not airing a single one on the almighty Versus (the NHL's main broadcast channel).
Is this the new way of promotion in today's(Bettman's) NHL? Even giving it a name "Saturday Spectacular" ...If it's so darn spectacular, then shouldn't at least ONE game or maybe even a double header be aired on the NHL's only mainstream cable network? Is this some way to make Direct Tv customers not feel so bad?
C'mon now Bettman, I'm no PR genius but tonight seems like a good of a night as any to do a big time hockey night of some sorts. I believe the other night, when I was originally going to post this conflict. Their was 12 games being played and not a single one was on Versus. Long gone are the days of Saturday/Friday Hockey Night with good ol' Bill Clement & Gary Thorne on ESPN. Several of tonight's match-ups would have made for a great build up. Especially our Red Wings taking on Ovechkin and the Caps.
I'm surprised I haven't really seen this mentioned anywhere else. Maybe most people have given up and moved on to alternate methods of viewing the game. NHL gamecenter seems like an over-priced joke. Options like sopcast, ustream, etc. are okay as last resorts but not great quality compared to TV. Not to mention they don't really do much as far as promoting the sport goes. What are some of your thoughts on this???
13 games in 1 night = Spectacular.
Not being able to watch them = Not so spectacular.
KHL approves Hudler's contract
Bye Bye Jiri Hudler. The KHL has approved his 2 year contract with Moscow, so no matter what comes of yesterday's meeting, Hudler is gone...atleast for 2 years.
Leino re-signs for 2 year deal
ESPN reports Leino has signed a two-year deal at a cap hit of $800,000.
This is what we’re looking at now.
Cap space: $2,529,347
No Meech: $3,012,680
No Lebda: $3,179,347
No Lilja: $3,779,347
...It's gonna be tight. However hopefully this will start a change in tide for our Wing's this off-season. Hasn't looked good so far, that's for sure. Now let's get Hudler taken care of...
