Looking back at Minnesota's action-packed, Hall of Famer-filled 1965 All-Star Game

+

"An epic 6-5 game featuring five home runs and a total of 16 Hall of Famers (plus Pete Rose)."

Alternative History - 1990 Twins go into rebuild

Devereaux plays with some alternative history, and a little bit of revisionist history, too, but points out what would have happened to the 1991 Twins had the organization been focused on building...

Twins in the Caribbean Series

+

Last night Puerto Rico's championship club upset host Venezuela to reach the finals of the Caribbean Series. The game was scoreless until Venezuelan SS Eduardo Escobar booted a slow grounder to load the bases in the 8th, then let a pop fly by CF Eddie Rosario drop behind him that scored two runs. Ex-Twin Lew Ford was 0-for-3 as the Venezuela DH.

Twins in the 2013 Fielding Bible rankings

+

Panel includes Bill James, Peter Gammons, Rob Neyer, Joe Posnanski and Dave Cameron. Pedro Florimon 3rd place SS; Brian Dozier 8th place 2B; Joe Mauer 8th place C; Justin Morneau 10th place 1B. No outfielders this year, bummer.

Torii on Big Papi

"He was, I thought, the best hitter in 2002 on our ballclub, and he missed six, seven weeks, and we non-tendered him and the Red Sox picked up a gold mine," Hunter said. "I thought he was the best hitter on our ballclub with the Minnesota Twins. You guys found a diamond in the rough." Tsuyoshi Nishioka Land On His Feet For a Change

Will make more in Japan than he would have made in Rochester.

Back to back GIBBYs?

+

Last year Ben Revere won a GIBBY (Greatness in Baseball) award for Play of the Year. He's a nominee again this year. Vote for the Twins super patriot. Or just enjoy all 30 nominations.

Twins in Fielding Bible's Top Ten

+

Three Twins made it into the top ten in fielding in 2012, according to the Fielding Bible. The Bible's voters are a ten-man panel of big names (James, Gannon, Neyer, Posnanski, and on and on). Denard Span was voted third best CF in the MLB in 2012. Ben Revere was the fourth best RF. And Alexi Casilla was voted fifth best 2B.

Contract "Harakiri Tsunami" Threatens

Although Tsuyoshi Nishioka did not bring much talent to the Minnesota club, he did end his fruitless tenure with honor by rescinding the last year on his 3-year contract. Now his departure has...

ESPN's Tim Keown on Joe Mauer

Excellent article from ESPN The Magazine. The Mauer facade is impossible to crack; profiles like this are as close as we'll ever get.

Joe Posnanski on Joe Mauer

I did not know that one of my favorite sportswriters, Joe Posnanski, is posting on MLB.com. Here is his take on the waiver news - or non-news, if you prefer - and on long contracts.

Short But Wondrous Summers

The SABR Convention was in Minneapolis this summer and SABR members received this publication about baseball in Minnesota, with articles by some great local writers. It's now on-line. Enjoy.

The Day They Booed Tony Oliva

I only boo bad umpiring calls. I don't boo big league athletes. I certainly won't think to boo a Twin - someone out there trying to help win one for the home team. I've been hearing a lot lately...

Are the Twins an interesting team to keep an eye on?

+

"The Twins are an interesting team to keep an eye on. They are losing more than $30 million dollars in payroll with the exit of Michael Cuddyer, Joe Nathan, and Jason Kubel. And after the 2013 season the contract of Justin Morneau expires, which should have been a payroll fright for the Twins, but seems to be a relief due to the Morneau's struggles since suffering the concussion in 2010. I think it's a great fit, but it's difficult to imagine the Twins beat the market on Reyes."
