Manny Lawson
I have seen a few people on here clamoring for the Lions to sign Manny Lawson. As I am also a Niners fan, I thought I could let you know a little more about Manny Lawson, to help make a more educated decision as to whether you want him to be a Lion or not.
Pros
1. Lawson is pretty good in coverage and a solid tackler.
2. He is really quick, running a 4.48 40 at the 2006 combine.
3. Lawson is smart and doesn't make many big mistakes.
Cons
1. Lawson played DE in college and 3-4 OLB for the Niners. No experience at 4-3 OLB
2. He is inconsistent and can disappear from the game at times. There are times that he will blow up the qb and force a fumble and you wonder "WHO IS THIS GUY!" and then you won't hear his name for a few games after that.
3. As a 3-4 OLB he has only registered 15 sacks in a little over 4 years. He can get the hurries but doesn't seem to finish the sack very well.
I myself, would rather that the Lions pass on him in free agency. Lawson is a solid 3-4 OLB but not a great one, nor will he probably ever be. He has never played in a 4-3 and I have serious doubts as to whether he can transition to that position. I think Lawson would be better served finding another 3-4 team or possible even a Tampa 2 team that could plug him in at DE, and the Lions would be better served finding a veteran linebacker from a 4-3 background. I am not a Lawson hater, nor have I ever been one. He has been solid as a Niner and doesnt hurt the team and I truthfully wouldn't mind him resigning with them for a decent contract, but as a Lion.....I don't think so.
Jersey Help
Hi guys I am looking for a jersey to buy for my oldest soon to be 6 year old son this Christmas. I know this has been posted on here before somewhere but I can't find it. Besides ebay, where can I find a quality stitched jersey for a good price? I want to find the best price possible as money is really tight this year with the addition of a 3rd son this last June. If there is a place cheap enough I would sure like to find a jersey for myself as well! Thanks!
Barry Sanders Jr. article
I was browsing through Yahoo today and thought that I would share this article with you guys.
Early 1st Round Pick Debate.
All right guys, we are only 4 games into the season this year, but we all know we will not be making the playoffs. We all know that our major weaknesses lie in our secondary and with our linebackers. We all know that we will be picking at least in the top 15 picks this coming draft. With that being said, which one of these guys would you want to be a Detroit Lion next year? All of these guys are extremely talented and I would love to have any of them...two of them come from a Tar Heels team and may have some character concerns, but I think they can easily be turned around. Also, feel free to let me know who your favorite prospect is if unlisted here.
Hopeful Mock Draft Scenario and a Likely Scenario
Hey guys, I have been doing some thinking about the Detroit Lions draft needs and I have come up with two different scenarios for this years draft for the Lions....the first scenario involves a feasible trade even though it is unlikely and the second a straight up mock draft....tear me apart!
Scenario 1 Seattle trades pick #6 plus #40 for pick 2 we take it even though it is under the trade value chart because of the depth of this years draft. Seattle does it to get an elite player and still has a pick in the 1st round.
1. Russell Okung
2a. Jahvid Best
2b. Devin McCourty
3. Morgan Burnett
4. John Jerry
5. Freddie Barnes
7. Boo Robinson
Scenario 2 we stay in the 2 spot
1. Russell Okung- I think we stay with Okung at this spot because Backus is getting old, and Schwartz thinks he can play LG this would help a whole lot. Stafford needs some protection especially with Peppers, Allen, and Matthews in the division.
2. Devin McCourty
3. Morgan Burnett
4. LeGarrette Blount or Ben Tate
5. Brandon Carter
7. Boo Robinson.
I love both Eric Berry and Ndamukong Suh but I really think that our front office will draft Okung here to keep Stafford off of his back.
David Baas
I notice that there has been a lot of chatter of signing David Baas as a free agent this year. I am a fan of the 49ers as well (they are my 2nd team) and I would like to educate you a little bit on David Baas. The 49ers are very likely to sign him to a one year contract this year and let him become an unrestricted free agent next year. If a CBA goes through they are still likely to sign him to a one or two year contract because he will not cost a whole lot of money.
While David Baas is a very good run blocker, he is also a very inconsistent pass blocker and tends to get pushed around and burned in the passing game. Also, Baas is never really completely healthy. This year he missed a month of practice during training camp while being injured in a nutcracker drill. In 2008 he tore a pectoral muscle in camp and underwent surgery. In 2005 he tore a hamstring in his rookie training camp and was hampered all year. He never did start a game in 2006. In 2007 he started 8 games. In 2008 9 games. This year he started every game but was not 100% until about week 4.
Baas is an above average guard when he is healthy. Although he is certainly not an elite guard or even a really good overall guard. My question is do we really need a guy that is almost guaranteed to be hurt in training camp, miss practices, and have a slow start to the season on this team?
Updated Walter Football Mock
I thought the latest mock draft from Walter Football was pretty interesting and I have to say I liked what they had for us. They have the Rams selecting Jimmy Clausen with Ndamukong Suh falling right into our laps. This is the way their 4 round draft fell for us.
1. Ndamukong Suh
2. Kyle Wilson
3. Dexter McCluster
4. John Jerry
I love this as it fills major holes for us and gives us an explosive player like McCluster to complement CJ in the slot and draw coverage away from him. He could also play running back and teams would be forced to pay attention to him there as well. Kyle Wilson could develop into a shutdown corner and will definitely start right away. Ndamukong Suh will be a monster. Also, I really like John Jerry he is probably my 2nd favorite guard in the draft behind Iupati, and I really think he will be solid for any team that gets him.
Thoughts? Who would you fill in in the 5th and 6th rounds to complete this draft?
Brandon Ghee
I can see that there is little to no love for CB Brandon Ghee from Wake Forest on here and I wonder why? This guy is 6'0" 190 lbs with tremendous speed who can play both man and zone coverages and is very confident. He did not have many interceptions this year because nobody threw the ball his way this year, which is a testament to his coverage skills.
At the Senoir Bowl Practices this year, they lined him up opposite the fastest receiver on the field, Taylor Price. He was lined up tight on him and ran stride for stride down the field. Ghee is also very instinctive and will jump routes and is a very good tackler in run support.
In my opinion Ghee and Kyle Wilson are the top two cornerbacks in this years draft and both should be looked seriously at in the top of the 2nd round. I myself would love to have either of them but am leaning a bit more towards Ghee. If we go a different route here and either of these guys were to drop toward the middle or latter part of round 2 I think we should seriously consider trading up to get them. We need guys like this!
Potential Draft targets for all 7 rounds.
I know there was an earlier reference to draft targets, but I thought I would throw this in anyway for comments.
Round 1
Ndamunkong Suh 6'4" 305 DT Nebraska (Everyone's favorite at number 1)
Eric Berry 5'11" 195 S Tennessee (Top prospect but don't know if we need him as much as other positions)
Gerald McCoy 6'4" 295 DT Oklahoma (I don't really like him but that doesn't mean he won't be great)
Joe Haden 5'11" 228 CB Florida (He is really only an option if trading down.)
Derrick Morgan 6'4" 270 DE Georgia Tech (This guy will probably rocket up the boards in the combine)
C.J. Spiller 5'11" 190 RB Clemson (He could be a dark horse at the 2 spot with RB being a huge ?)
Round 2
Mike Iupati 6'6" 330 G Idaho (If only he falls this far, our LG savior)
Jon Asamoah 6'5" 309 G Illinois (A nice consolation prize if Iupati is gone)
Terrance Cody 6'5" 378 DT Alabama (He doesn't get much pass rush but no one gets by him)
Brandon Graham 6'2" 270 DE Michigan (Versatile end with good speed)
Jason Pierre-Paul 6'6" 260 DE South Florida (Great athlete on the end)
Golden Tate 5'11" 195 WR Notre Dame (Very quick receiver with great hands could open things up for CJ)
Arrelious Benn 6'2" 214 WR Illinois (higly touted receiver could be a star nex to CJ)
Jonathon Dwyer 5'11" 235 RB Georgia Tech (Fills a huge need at RB quick and strong)
Jahvid Best 5'10" 195 RB California (Quick little back would be a great pickup for us.
Brandon Ghee 6'1" 190 CB Wake Forest (Has the size speed and coverage skills to be a shutdown corner)
Javier Arenas 5'9" 200 CB/KR/PR Alabama (This is my favorite corner in the draft, good tackler, good zone or man defender he is a little small but he is very smart and quick)
Patrick Robinson 5'11" 194 CB Florida State (Good one on one coverage lacks ideal speed)
Round 3
Marvin Austin 6'3" 305 DT UNC (Lacks consistency but great run stuffer and surprisingly athletic for his size)
Vince Oghobaase 6'5" 305 DT Duke (Needs to improve strength but has great agility)
Mike Johnson 6'6" 305 G Alabama (Outstanding run blocker, sometimes struggles pass protecting though)
Vladimir Ducasse 6'5" 330 G UMass (Versatile linemen outside of Iupati he is my favorite)
George Selive 6'4" 255 DE South Florida (In my opinion the most underrated DE in college football)
Kyle Wilson 5'10" 190 CB Boise State (Very smart CB good one on one coverage and return skills)
Devin McCourty 5'11" 185 CB Rutgers (Solid corner with good quickness and cover skills)
Akwasi Owusu-Ansah 6'1" 205 CB Indiana Univ of Penn (Great ball skills and speed, he has feasted on special teams scoring 7 touchdowns on special teams in his college career.
Myron Rolle 6'2" 218 S Florida State- (Great size, strength and instincts, very smart as he was a Rhodes Scholar)
Demaryious Thomas 6'3" 229 WR Georgia Tech (This guy is a monster and if he makes it this far it would be very difficult to pass him up! He is a near clone of CJ he has had been playing on an option team with a horrible qb or he would have garnered much more national attention. I doubt he slips past the 2nd but I put him in here anyways.
Dexter McCluster 5'8" 165 Athlete Ole Miss- (He is an amazing athlete that we could put in the slot, in the backfield on occasion or use him as our return man on special teams, but will not be an every down player due to his injury problems and lack of size, again would be difficult to pass up at this point in the draft.
Round 4
John Jerry 6'6" 335 G Ole Miss (This guy is a road grader but his doesn't have quick feet and may be a liability in the passing game, still could be worth a shot at this point)
Mitch Petrus 6'4" 305 G Arkasnas (Lacks ideal size and needs to put on some weight but very solid linemen)
Boo Robinson 6'2 295 DT Wake Forest (Extremely talented but lacks ideal size for DT if he can bulk up and stay as athletic as he is he would be an absolute steal here.)
Larry Asante 6'1" 215 S Nebraska (He is a very solid tackler but doesn't get many interceptions, could be an imposing safety for us)
Devin Ross 5'11" 185 CB Arizona (He is a good cover corner with decent speed could be a mid round gem CB)
Round 5
Sergio Render 6'3 319 G Virginia Tech (Big guard considered a top guard coming into the year well worth a shot at this point in the draft)
Reggie Stephens 6'3" 335 G Iowa State (Another big guard worth considering here, I put him behind Render though)
Brandon Carter 6'7" 344 G Texas Tech (If he is here this late there is absolutely no reason we shouldn't take him, he is a mammoth guard with good feet some say he could even play T someday in the NFL.
Myron Lewis 6'2" 205 CB Vanderbilt (He is a big corner but lacks ideal speed and can be beaten deep, needs to be a physical bump and run corner)
Freddie Barnes 6'0" 206 WR Bowling Green (Not ideal speed but runs great routes, has great hands and is always open)
Stafon Johnson 5'11" 216 RB USC (He will drop maybe even farther than this after injury but has good speed and power would be a good flyer pick at this point)
LeGarrette Blount 6'1" 240 RB Oregon (Doesn't have great speed but is decisive and hits holes quickly and man is he powerful, he could be our thunder back, similar to the Giants with Brandon Jacobs, but we also need a lightning)
Round 6
Rahim Alem 6'3" 263 DE LSU (He was considered a top DE but has tapered off this year and has been clocked as high as 4.67 in the 40, so he is quick and athletic. His stock will probably rise as the combine rolls around but for now he is stuck here.
Walter McFadden 6'1 185 CB Auburn (He is a quick corner but has been a bit inconsistent this year, could be a late round gem.
Trindon Holliday 5'5" 164 KR/WR (Super fast and explosive well worth a shot this late as he is a threat to go all the way every time he touches the ball)
Taylor Price 6'1" 209 WR Ohio (He is fast and could be a good slot receiver in the NFL to stretch the field)
Round 7
Ekom Udofia 6'2" 320 DT Stanford (He is pretty athletic for a big guy and can run a 4.9 40 but comes with questions)
Kion Wilson6'2" 235 MLB South Florida (He is an underrated MLB but I have him here for special teams purposes)
Brandon Banks 5'7" 150 WR/KR Kansas State (Very undersized but super fast possible slot receiver but I have him here for KR purposes)
Lamarcus Coker 5'11" 205 Hampton (Explosive speed can break it every time he touches the ball trasferred to Hampton from Tennessee can also do kick returns...imagine Blount and Coker combination in the backfield!)
10 Mock Drafts (Suh or Berry)
I have done quite a bit of research and I have come up with ten different mock drafts, five with Suh and five with Berry. I believe that since we are almost positively going to be in the number 2 position that we will come away with one of these two. Some of these drafts are sexy pick drafts and some of them are built from the trenches and defensive side, so there should be something for everyone to like in here, or maybe not since most of you ripped into my last mock pretty good.

Detroit Lions 2010 Mock Draft
Hey guys, I have been reading posts on this site for a little over a year now, but this is my first time writing. I love the Lions no matter how terrible they are and follow them closely week in and week out. I would like to put my 2 cents in as to how I would like to see them draft this year. First I would trade Ernie Sims because we need draft picks...I think we could get a 3rd and a 5th for him from a Tampa 2 team in need of a fast linebacker....Next, I would draft a little like this.
1. Derrick Morgan DE Georgia Tech (This guy is a monster who can get the QB and stop the run!)
2. Jahvid Best RB Cal (We get an elusive and elite RB)
3a. Demaryious Thomas WR Georgia Tech (We go back to Tech to get this monster 6'3" 229 24.9 YPC!
3b. Javier Arenas CB Alabama or Devin McCourty CB Rutgers if Arenas is gone
4. Akwasi Owusu Ansah CB IUP ( 5 Special Teams touchdowns and 2 picks this year!)
5a. John Jerry G Ole Miss (Massive guard to block for Best)
5b. Vladimir Ducasse G UMass (Versatile lineman who has even played some LT with good results)
5c. Larry Asante S Nebraska
6. Cam Thomas DT UNC or Boo Robinson DT Wake Forest
7. Brett Swenson K MSU
With this draft we get a freak pass rusher, an elite rb for years to come, a legit #2 wide receiver to take pressure off of CJ, two young corners with high potential that can both return kicks, 2 big guards that can both potentially start from day one, a young DT with good upside, and a kicker to replace Hanson or just do kick offs and long field goals until Hanson retires. Let me know what you think!
