Bloody Elbow "Lesnar isn't a fighter"

This started as a comment about Luke Rockhold recently making some comments about Lesnar not being a real fighter, but I've been meaning to post my 2 cents on this as it's been on my mind since before the Carwin fight - so here it is as a post instead.

First of all, I hate when MMA fans rewrite history. Someone is the top p4p guy in the world, and then has a few losses and suddenly he was never all that good and every win in the past gets questioned or explained away. Having said that, I never think Brock should have been near a p4p list.

Make no mistake, Lesnar is one tough mofo - but he doesn't like to fight. He isn’t a fighter per se, he’s a walk-home-on-your-broken-leg kind of tough guy. Offer a guy like that 3-5 million to step in to a cage with real actual professional fighters he’s going to say "hey, I’ll see what I can do". That’s the vibe I always got from Lesnar – he knew he had his size and his wrestling and if he could get on top of someone (like with Mir) he could farmboy-smash them in to next week. But, if it turned in to an actual real fight with a real pro with similar physical attributes as himself he knew his chances of winning were pretty slim – but for 400K to show and a few million in PPV money that’s not something that's going to cause a guy like Brock to back away from the challenge.

I really don’t think he came in to the AO fight with winning in mind – more like "just give it a try and see what happens, at least I get paid and who knows? I could even win" – nor do I believe he would have against Dos Santos. Why would he turn down that kind of money? Wrestling is fake and all, but they get real injuries all the time. He was offered several million to be put through hell for a few minutes, I get why he didn’t turn it down even if he really deep down didn’t want to be fighting in a cage. IMO Brock isn't a fighter and he never was. But that's not to say that he's a big p*ssy - he's a tough highly skilled athlete who got paid millions to step in to a cage with professional fighters because that's what people apparently wanted to see.

"Talk to the shin"

Personally very glad to see Taylor not only get a win, but a spectacular KO. He's been fighting for a long time in the UFC now, and even though his record hasn't been stellar his exciting style has kept him around on the undercards. Hopefully this gets him a spot on a spike tv main card against someone he matches up well against.

Bloody Elbow The Number Are In: EA Sports MMA Is a Commercial Flop

The game sold just 45,000 units in its release month, according to an article at GameIndustry.biz that references a report by analyst Cowen & Company. To put this in perspective, the original UFC Undisputed 2009 sold over 1 million copies across PS3 and Xbox 360 in its first month of release according to market research firm NPD , and even the rather lukewarmly received 2010 edition managed 413,000

Thought Duffee was doing ok, at least from sponsorship money. He had a lot of big double spread type ads in mma magazines for supplements.

Bloody Elbow Warmachine Arrested Again - Assault with Deadly Weapon

0331_warmachine_launch_02_medium

via www.blogcdn.com

From TMZ:

Warmachine -- which is the fighter's legal name -- was arrested outside a bar called Thruster's Lounge around 11 pm.

Law enforcement sources tell us Machine and another male were fighting with bouncers -- and when cops tried to approach the situation, War Machine took off running.

Eventually, cops caught up with the 28-year-old -- threw him in handcuffs, and for some reason, put a spit bag over his head ... which is generally applied when the perp gets a little too aggressive with his oral fluids.

Machine was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon -- though it's unclear what the weapon is. He's currently being held in a SD jail.

This is after posting the following to his twitter account only two days ago (incidentally, a summary of his updates from the past few days about changing his ways was posted earlier this morning here):

I changed my Twitter name, make a note of it. Time for War Machine to get his life on track. No more trouble, no more porn. I’m going to train hard, win my fights, and get back in the UFC. By November my partners and I will be opening a new gym in Washington State. I’m going to get married in June, start living a good life. Too much BS in the last few years, I’m making a HUGE change, life’s too short to spend it being a f**k-up.

Bloody Elbow First live event - need some advice for 104

I've never been to a UFC event before, and I'm very excited about them coming back to Los Angeles. However, I'm completely clueless to the whole process and I want to come in prepared for a change :P

Here's my situation: I'm surprising a friend who helped me out long time ago. His wife is in on it too, she's planned something boring with him for the night of the 24th to keep him in the dark, and I'm just going to show up with the tickets in hand :) He's a big Machida fan and has never been to a live event before, so it should be fun.

So here's the thing, I've got $1500 set aside for this and it's going to have to cover both our tickets. Since I'm not exactly a high roller I had to forgo a bunch of stuff to save up so I'd like to spend my money wisely (but I'm burning all of it on the 24th :)) .

So first of all, I don't want to fuck it up by trying to order too late. Like I said, I can spend $750 per ticket - do I need to worry about whatever section that gets me in might be sold out during the presale? I thought I was subscribed to the newsletter, but it turned out to be the ufc store (which I guess is different). How do I get in on the newsletter presale? Heard about some email...

Second, I saw some seat plan earlier with prices, but I don't know if it was correct. It showed that $750 is still in the section against the wall, but on the side. If that's true, is it worth it or are slightly cheaper ones pretty much the same? Does anyone know where you get the best bang for your buck - maybe someone has been to staple center before? If $750 seats don't really look like anything special, maybe I could just as well get worse seats and buy something else for the extra $$?

[EDIT] Here's the link to the seat chart I saw earlier. Are these prices right? In that case, which is the best ticket to get for $750 or under? Section 4 is $750, that would be epic. How are the rows determined, by purchase order? Sorry for the rambling, it's late :P

Finally, I've heard if you're a fight club member you get to go to a Q&A before the fight or something, what's the deal with that? If that's true, that might be fun...would it be worth it to take slightly worse seats and use some of the ticket money for fightclub memberships?

Anyway, as you can tell I have no clue, and I'd much appreciate any advice you can give me to make the night as memorable as possible! Thanks

Bloody Elbow If Strikeforce Folds, What Happens To EA's MMA Game?

Holy s**t it's been an interesting few days in mma. Every time I check back in there's some major news about someone who got screwed over, or someone who got signed. It's currently way too early and way too chaotic to tell what the future holds for Strikeforce, but I think even the most optimistic fans would be reluctant to put their life savings on the future of the promotion right now. Anything can happen, and rumors circling around are just that - rumors. But no one can deny that there's a definite possibility that some of the mentioned potential problems will get the best of Strikeforce and force them to join the rest of UFC's challengers in the mma promotion graveyard. And though the demise of Strikeforce would bring with it many possible implications currently discussed on blogs and message boards, I got to thinking about EA sports upcoming MMA game in particular.

Bloody Elbow Fedor's name is bigger than UFC outside America? Umm...

http://www.google.com/trends?q=ufc%2C+fedor

During today's conference call, Vadim claimed that "Fedor's name is bigger than UFC outside America".

Not that anyone is taking this seriously, but let's have a look shall we? Above is a link to the relative search volumes on Google for Fedor (Red) vs UFC (Blue). No surprise that UFC is bigger in the US. But if you scroll down to the "regions" section, you'll see that UFC completely eclipses searches for Fedor in Canada, Philippines, Ireland, Brazil, UK, Sweden, Australia, France & Japan (i.e. every single country listed).

Again, no surprises here, but it just shows how full of s**t the guy is.

Emelianenko will be joined by Dutch-American Gegard Mousasi and Brazilian Renato Sobral, three fighters who join "a long list of fighters" that will make appearances in EA Sports MMA, the company announced today. All three will be throwing fists at an upcoming Strikeforce fight, with EA Sports sponsoring Mousasi and Sobral.

I wonder if the UFC wills till stand by their EA ban now :)

Bloody Elbow Gamespot likes UFC Undisputed

Seems the guys at Gamespot are getting in to the new UFC Game:

First it destroyed my hand and now UFC 2009 Undisputed has infected the entire GameSpot office. I'm having trouble remembering the last time a game took over GS HQ so thoroughly. Homer and I spent way too much time talking about the game while in NYC for the Madden unveiling and, now that we're back, we've watched the game spread like wildfire among editorial, the GS video team, and beyond.

Sounds like the game will be a ton of fun to play with friends. They are showing the entire tournament tomorrow 4 p.m. PDT (full version of the game), in a special edition of their web show on the spot, and the finals will be shown live. That's a pretty solid endorsement coming from one of the biggest gaming websites around.

Original article with teaser video here.
