Good move Yankees.

Apparently the Soriano deal was ownership's decision. That's good and bad. Good that apparently Cashman is not losing his mind. Bad because it means he's seemingly losing the power he had gained in 2006.

Pinstripe Alley Andruw Jones a Yankee?

According to Jon Heyman, the Yankees are thinking about Andruw Jones.

I would love to see Andruw Jones in pinstripes. The Yankees need a right handed hitting outfielder for the bench. Jones fits that description. He was paid 500K in each of the past two seasons, so he should not be a expensive option. It seems like he would sign for the amount, or $1mil if we had to, because at least he would have another job, another chance.

His defense is not what it once was (historic) but it is not bad yet either. Considering he would be a fourth outfielder, he will only get 200-300 PA. His offense isn’t what it once was, but his BB rate the past couple seasons has been good, and he has legit power still- .200+ ISO the past two seasons. For a million dollars, I can see Jones providing the Yankees with around 250 PA, some defensive innings, and about 1 WAR. That might not seem essential, but the Yankees need another Marcus Thames and I think Jones could do even better job.

Pinstripe Alley Robbie Cano knows BOOM!

After a stellar MVP-esque season from the New York Yankees star second baseman, Robinson Cano, I am obligated to reflect upon his monster season and look ahead to what we can expect from him in 2011, being that he’s my boy and all.

*I wrote this for my blog, so it's tailored for the average baseball fan, not Yankee fans specifically, so the way it's written might throw you off or the info might seem obvious. Just wanted to put something up here.

Pinstripe Alley Introducing Brandon Laird and Corban Joseph

Yesterday the Yankees promoted 1b/3b Brandon Laird to AAA Scranton and 2b/3b Corban Joseph to AA Trenton Thunder. These are two of the more interesting positional prospects in the Yankees system, which is a system lacking many top flight positional prospects at the higher levels. I haven’t done a prospect analysis in a long while so I may be rusty, but I figured I’ll give it a shot.

Brandon Laird

Age: 22

Bats/Throws: R/R

Position: 1b/3b

Brandon Laird was drafted by the Yankees in the 27th round of the 2007 draft, and is the brother of Tigers catcher, Gerald Laird. Fortunately, Brandon looks to be a better player than his brother. The year he was drafted Laird reported to the GCL for 45 games, where he was able to hit .339/.367/.577 in 168 PA. In 2008 he reported to Charleston in the Sally League, where he showed good pop in his bat. He posted a line of .274/.335/.499 with a .398 park-adjusted wOBA.

Pinstripe Alley Lance Berkman trade analysis

It appears as though a Lance Berkman to New York trade is all but done. The biscuit is cooked and all they need to do is spread the butter.

As a Yankees fan, I am PUMPED about this trade. We are reportedly not giving up any significant “prospects” up to acquire Berkman, in exchange for eating his remaining salary. He will strictly be a two (err three) month rental, meaning the Yankees will buy him out for $2mil after the season and receive a draft pick- Berkman is a type B free agent- after he declines their arbitration offer.

Pinstripe Alley Dan Haren trade analysis

I posted this on BtB, but figured I'd put it here as well since it affects Yankee Universe.

In what will be the biggest news of the day (and possibly the week) the Los Angeles Angels have traded for Dan Haren. The Angels seemingly jumped in out of nowhere to get this deal done when the favorites were the Yankees, Tigers, and Phillies. So they must have put together some amazing package considering they wanted Joba Chamberlain from New York and Andrew Oliver from Detroit, right? Wrong.

In return for the annual Cy Young candidate, the Arizona Diamondbacks will be receiving Joe Saunders, prospects Rafael Rodriguez and Patrick Corbin, as well as a player to be named later.

Yeah, dumb. A well below average pitcher, a minor league RELIEF PITCHER, and a prospect who ranked #22 in the Angels system prior to the season. For Dan Haren.

Beyond the Box Score Los Angeles Angels trade for Dan Haren

First post here. I don't think this is my best work at all, but I want to see what you think. Very open to constructive criticism, as I'm always trying to learn to better my analysis and writing skills. Well, enough of an intro, here we go:

Pinstripe Alley Addressing Yankee trade rumors: Cody Ross

3 posts in my first full day here. Just trying to make an impression not overload the site. Moving along...

Earlier tonight I addressed Yankee trade rumors connecting them to Dan Haren and Zack Greinke (kind of).

Along with Dan Haren, the Yankees have been linked to Cody Ross. Ross is a 29 year old outfielder on the Florida Marlins, who will be owed around $1.5mil the rest of the season, and is arbitration eligible after the season for the last time before he hits free agency. Why are the Yankees interested in him?

Cody Ross would be an ideal platoon partner with Curtis Granderson. Granderson has always struggled against lefties as he has a .268 wOBA in 786 compared to a .377 wOBA in 2384 PA against righties. Ross on the other hand has a .398 wOBA in 595 PA against lefties and a .317 wOBA in 1439 PA against righties. On the surface, they seem like a perfect platoon. I mean, their wOBA difference against LHP is 130 points while their difference in wOBA against RHP is 60 points. Bat Curtis and his .377 wOBA against righties, while you bat Cody Ross and his .398 wOBA against lefties.

Well, its’ not that easy.

Pinstripe Alley Addressing Yankee trade rumors: Dan Haren and Zack Greinke

I wrote this just before the latest breaking Haren news, but it doesn't change anything. Here we go...

Rumors of a potential Dan Haren trade have been swirling for weeks, but they have kicked up a notch recently, with the Yankees listed as one of the potential trade partners. I have been doubting New York’s true interest in Haren, but the latest rumors say that if Arizona wants to talk prospects instead of ML ready players, talks with New York would heat up. So let me break down a potential trade between the two teams.

First off, let me start by saying Dan Haren is an awesome pitcher. Here are his WAR numbers starting from 2005 to 2009: 4.0, 4.0, 4.9, 6.5, and 6.1. He’s a pretty good pitcher as you can tell. His career numbers include a 3.69 FIP, 3,61 xFIP, 3.99 tERA, 7.74 K/9, 1.97 BB/9, and 1.07 HR/9. That’s quite filthy. But 2010 has been a quasi-down year for Haren. While he is sporting a career best 9.00 K/9 and has a 1.85 BB/9, his home run rate has exploded. Currently it is 1.47 HR/9 which has led to a 3.92 FIP. On the bright side, his xFIP is 3.31 and his rest of season projection gives him a 3.27 FIP. His periphs indicate that he has been just fine.

Pinstripe Alley Should the Yankees start Sergio Mitre or Ivan Nova?

With Andy Pettitte’s groin injury, the biggest question in Yankee Universe is who should be a temporary starter in place of “Gawky” Andy Pettitte. The Yankees are going with Sergio Mitre for now, but is that the right decision?

Before I begin, let me state my love for Sergio Mitre. I love him. Plain and simple. Why? I don’t know. I cannot remember how I first learned of him and why he was so special to me. Maybe it was that sex panther musk he had on that allured me to him. But I do remember him winning a Cy Young award for me on MVP Baseball 2005- the best XBOX era video game ever created. So naturally when the Yankees signed him, I was pretty excited. So one would figure I’d be wetting myself over the fact he will be a starter in the Yankees rotation.
