From BettorsWorld:

Louisville Cardinals - Odds to win the Big East 15/1 - Coach Steve Kragthrope replaced six coaches after last year’s disastrous 5-7 overall and 1-6 Big East season. They ended the season with 5 consecutive losses, but will try to bring back some of the magic they saw in the 2006 season. That magic could start on offense. The Cardinals will be returning 9 starters, including RB Victor Anderson who racked up over 1,000 yards last year. North Carolina State transfer Justin Burke is the most likely to take over the QB duties. He saw limited action with the Wolf Pack in 2007. The defense was atrocious last year but should be markedly better this season. Experience can be the key with many things in life and that something the Cardinals defense finally has. Games at Kentucky and Utah early in the year will tell us all we need to know about the Cardinals. They won’t compete for the Big East title this year.

Syracuse coming in at 50:1

Cinci - 8:1

UConn - 8:1

Rutgers - 5:1

USF - 2.5:1

WVU - 2.5:1

Pitt - 2.5:1

They actually go on to pick Pitt as the dark horse, but I think the pick is based solely on the Wannstache's urgency to please a Pennsylvania crowd who has become ensconced (<strike>in velvet</strike>) in championships lately (NFL, NHL, MLB). So what this tells me is we don't have a snow cone's shot in hell to pull off a BE championship. Also, i'm guessing we're probably the underdog in the Syracuse game.

The second installment of your 2009 newbie introduction will feature the skill positions of receivers and tailbacks. These recruits definitely have some potential. They're not household recruiting names yet, but neither were Harry Douglas (ranked #139 of WRs) and Mario Urrutia (ranked #66 of WRs). Unfortunately, UofL is in the perilous predicament where they must recruit guys based mostly on potential and not necessarily on their achievements and scouts ratings. Here's to hoping our recruiters know what they're doing. At least there are some cool names.

* indicates the rating from scouts.com

__________________________________________________________________________________________

#5 **RB/S Boogie McCray (Lake Taylor HS, Norfolk, VA) 6-2/210

via media.scout.com

A definite pick to the All-Awesome Name team, Boogie McCray (video) originally committed to NC State, but ended up having academic issues. Lucky for us, he would later go on to pledge his allegiance to the Cards. I can only hope his academics will not be an issue here at UofL. Here is a nice little story about him from his high school coach and teammates perspectives.

McCray was a high school teammate of another UofL commit Mike Privott and chose UofL over ODU and Marshall (and sorta NC State). In his senior season, McCray rushed for 1,627 yards and 18 TDs while being voted Eastern District Offensive Player of the Year. He also registered 14 sacks and 49 tackles on the defensive side of the ball too.

McCray looks like a good physical running back compared to some of our smaller elusive backs (although I've seen him listed anywhere from 6'0 to 6'2) and may potentially be moved in at linebacker for his size. Do I hear a thunder and lightning combo?

Guaranteed Prediction: Mr McCray will give new meaning to the term "Boogie Cam" (which also brings back fond memories of Patrick Patterson - you know you laughed)

 __________________________________________________________________________________________

#28 ***RB Jeremy Wright (East Ridge HS, Clermont, FL) 5-9.5/186/4.53

Let me just introduce you to Jeremy Wright like this:

I'm really psyched about this guy and don't know why he wasn't more heavily recruited. His stats are amazing. His 40 time is great. The only knock on him might be his size. However, the Big East has been recently littered with shorter running backs who do just fine (see Vic Anderson, Steve Slaton, Noel Devine, LeSean McCoy, Curtis Brinkley), so I'll look forward to his blistering speed.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

#6 **WR Sean Farr (Paul Laurence Dunbar HS, Baltimore, MD) 6-2/185/4.60

 via media.scout.com

Farr had offers from the likes of Maryland, Virginia, Eastern Michigan and Akron (da zips). Here he is on signing day with teammate Horace Miller.

Per UofL: Played for Lawrence Smith at Baltimore Dunbar High School... considered one of the top prospects in the State of Maryland... three-star prospect by Rivals.com... rated a two-star player by Scout.com and the 179th-best wide receiver... rated as the 61st-best wide receiver prospect in the country... guided team to a perfect 14-0 record, a school record for wins... selected to play in the Maryland Crab Bowl... named to the Baltimore Metro team... recorded back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons... part of a Poets' squad which scored a state-record 196 points in four playoff games, eclipsing the old mark (141) held by state champion Urbana in 1999... was a first team Small School All-State selection... caught 49 passes for 1,383 yards as a junior... averaged 28.2 yard per catch ... also tallied 18 touchdowns... been clocked at 4.57 in the 40-yd dash... caught three touchdowns for the Poets in their 2007 Small School State Championship game... named to the 2007 Maryland All-State team...entered senior year rated the No. 57 receiver in nation... Maryland small school state champion in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Farr is also known for catching a last-second TD pass (seriously, watch this) to help win his high school state championship game, so he's got a little "clutch" in him somewhere.

I think Farr is a great pickup for the staff at UofL. Farr was the 57th WR prospect and a 3-star by Rivals.com. He is not going to get immediate playing time but should factor in to the depth charts soon enough.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

**#14 WR Andrell Smith (Miami Palmetto Senior HS, Miami, FL) 6-4/210

From the UofL Bio: Played for Larry Coffey at Palmetto High School... is enrolled at U of fL... one of the top-rated players in the state of Florida... enrolled at Louisville in January... physical wide receiver... rated a two-star prospect by Rivals.com... ranked as the No. 15 prospect in Dade County... earned second team All-Dade County honors as a senior... missed time as a senior due to injuries... caught 35 passes for 356 yards as a junior.. named All-Dade Honorable Mention in 2006... chose Louisville over Western Michigan and Central Florida.

From what I've read, Andrell really wanted to go to Miami, but they didn't offer. I'm sure his injury really hurt his chances at some bigger schools, but he should have a better chance of getting some valuable playing time here. Smith makes for a big target (not Chichester big, though) and should give corners plenty to worry about when he takes the field.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

***#7 WR Damian Copeland (Palmetto HS- Palmetto, FL) 6-0/180

From the UofL Bio: Played for Raymond Woodie at Palmetto High School... physical wide receiver who has been clocked as low as 4.42... clocked at 4.46 at the University of Georgia camp... three-star recruit by Rivals.com... ranked as the 137th best wide receiver prospect by Scout.com... rated three-star prospect by Scout.com... caught 52 passes for 718 yards and 11 touchdowns during his senior season at Palmetto High School... named to the All-Area team... recorded four receiving touchdowns in a win over Tampa Robinson... made first team All-Area and All-State... selected the team's Offensive Most Valuable Player... Palmetto dropped a 30-17 decision to Braden River in the Class 3-A, Region 3 quarterfinals to finish the season at 8-3... played in the Brad Price Memorial PAL Bowl, which is a game pitting Manatee County's best senior football players against seniors from Sarasota... recorded 39 receptions for 600 yards as a junior... selected first team All-Area... voted the team's top wide receiver... recorded 18 pancake blocks from his wideout position.

Copeland, even after his committment to the Cards, received offers from Ole Miss, South Carolina, USF, WVU, Alabama, ND, and Syracuse. Back the truck up. This guy was actually recruited by some big guns and chose UofL? Welcome aboard!

Do you know how I know this guy is for real........the classy UofL shirt in the picture. Anyway, Copeland enrolled in December and competed in spring practice. He will be giving the upper classmen a run for their money as he has earned a roster spot this year.

So Pat Forde again tries to bring some national focus to the Cards/Cats rivalry (ahem, basketball). He rates this as the #1 current rivalry in the nation (more so than the Tobacco Road teams) mainly due to the increased fanaticism following Calipari's arrival.

1. Kentucky-Louisville

Why It's Hot Now: It's always hot, but the temperature shot up to nuclear-fusion levels when John Calipari was hired in Lexington. Suddenly, Rick Pitino has a rival with a comparably outsized personality and competitive nature. And for the first time in a long time, there is a genuine and mutual antipathy between the coaches, no matter what they say publicly. Meanwhile, a not-insignificant percentage of Kentucky fans seem to have reneged on their mellowing over Pitino's switch from blue to red after his moving eulogy to late UK equipment manager Bill Keightley last year. With Pitino's alleged extortionist heading to trial later this summer, they're salivating over the chance that their ex-coach's name will be dragged through the mud. On the other side, Louisville fans were gleeful over the May revelation of alleged NCAA violations on Calipari's watch at Memphis. Schadenfreude has long been the prevailing state emotion when it comes to this rivalry, but never more than now.

Upper Hand Today: Louisville has won two straight in the rivalry and had better NCAA tournament showings of late. In fact, there was no NCAA showing last March for Kentucky, a first since 1991. But the Wildcats look stronger for the coming season than the Cardinals.

Upper Hand Historically: Kentucky leads the all-time series 26-14. Pitino is 6-2 coaching the Cats against the Cards, 4-4 coaching the Cards against the Cats.

Cardinal Bird to Scratch the Wildcat: Can you even remember your last Final Four?

Scratch the Wildcat to Cardinal Bird: Can you even remember your last national title?

The University of Louisville's 2009-10 men's basketball season in the BIG EAST Conference will include a challenging slate of 18 games, including two games each against Connecticut, Syracuse and St. John's.

Louisville's home conference opponents will include Cincinnati, Connecticut, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Rutgers, St. John's, USF, Syracuse, and Villanova. The Cardinals' nine league road games will be at Connecticut, DePaul, Marquette, Pittsburgh, Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall, Syracuse and West Virginia.

At first (preseason) glance, it's a tough road schedule. I'm glad we only play WVU and MU once. Also, I'm interested to see who the final home game is for the last year of Freedom Hall. I guarantee we'll have to win that one in a dogfight to the end: a fitting tribue to 'the Hall'. I know this guy will be there.

Thanks to Brian Bennett's blog for pointing this out. Although we may not have "it" in the cash-cow sport, apparently our other sports deserve some congratulations, as we lead the Big East in the final Director's Cup standings. This just goes to show how far Tom Jurich has helped bring this school. Now if we could just get that pesky football team to improve.

08-09: 32nd

07-08: 32nd

06-07: 28th

05-06: 54th

04-05: 50th

1996-1997: 100th

Posted by ESPN.com's Brian Bennett

Louisville won just one Big East football game this year, but success in other sports helped the Cardinals finish as the top league team in the final Directors' Cup standings.

The Directors' Cup is an accumulation of points from teams throughout a schools' athletic department. Schools can gain points from 20 total varsity teams, with 10 being men's sports and 10 women's.

Bolstered by a Big East championship in men's basketball and an NCAA title-game appearance in women's basketball, Louisville finished 32nd overall, 18 spots ahead of the nearest Big East competitor, West Virginia.

Despite winning the Big East football crown, Cincinnati had the lowest score among league teams, ranking 129th nationally.

Here are the final standings for each Big East team:

32. Louisville

50. West Virginia

52. Connecticut

63. Syracuse

92. Rutgers

93. Pittsburgh

116. South Florida

129. Cincinnati

So we have all been made well-aware of the lack of depth facing this year's team.

We're no Texas (apparently Texas high schools only produce 3 -5 star recruits), but It seems as if the recruiting is picking up a little compared to the last 2 years. Kragthorpe and his new band of merry men have actually pulled some good in-state talent as well as prospects from neighboring Ohio (what's high in the middle and round on both ends?). Sprinkle those in with a couple of JUCOs from out west, and you have what looks to be the beginning of a relatively good recruiting class. Here's a quick update on the 2010 commitments.

ESPNU I think best summed up Paschal's game:

Paschal is a very versatile football player that has excellent athletic skills. He has good size and can play several different positions. Shows speed and quickness on the coverage unit; first man down the field on a regular basis and avoids contact in the openfield. Avoids blockers and takes good angles to the return man to make a play or make the returner bounce. As a safety comes up instantly on run support and isn't afraid to put his face on the ball carrier but needs to be a more consistent tackler; tends to ankle tackle at times while other times makes good solid hits. Possesses quick feet and breaks on the deep ball and underneath routes instinctively. Displays very good hands and can make the interception a routine play; times the pick perfectly. On offense, catches the ball well out of the backfield then make tacklers miss. Demonstrates he ability to turn a flare pass into a big gain. Slippery in the openfield and makes sharp cuts without losing speed. Paschal is a very valuable weapon on the field and can be slotted into several positions. He could be a safety, receiver, and even a corner if he can play man to man coverage. Paschal will be a major special teams standout at the next level.

Paschal starred mainly as a CB/safety, and will look to carry that over to UofL secondary. Because of our immediate need for a corner (I like to throw around the term "shut-down corner") and based on his size and quickness, he should see some playing time early in his collegiate career.

From the Dayton Daily News:

By Chick Ludwig, Staff Writer, June 16, 2009

Jordon Paschal will spend one more year as a Trotwood-Madison Ram, then he’ll spread his wings and fly away with the Louisville Cardinals.

The 5-foot-10, 182-pound cornerback gave Louisville head coach Steve Kragthorpe an oral commitment on Sunday, June 14, at the Cardinals’ development camp for high school seniors.

"Louisville’s a big school and it’s close to home," said Paschal, who considered Indiana, Cincinnati, Akron and Central Michigan. "They’ve got a great coaching staff and nice facilities. It’s a great opportunity for me, and I’m excited about my future."

Paschal is a versatile player who earned first team All-GWOC North honors as a junior for the 2008 Rams (4-6), who won four of their final five games after an 0-5 start to capture the North division title (4-0).

He recorded three interceptions for 23 yards, including a long gain of 15, and added two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and a sack. The highlight of his season came against Wayne when he returned a fumble 94 yards for a touchdown.

Pascal also scored two offensive TDs — one rushing and one receiving. He’ll cover kicks at Louisville and be given a shot as the Cardinals’ punt returner.

"I’m quick, and I’ll bring my (4.49) speed to the table," he said. "I know I can impact special teams right away. To be a corner, you’ve got to be smart, have good footwork and hips. You’ve got to remember: The offense makes plays, too. For a corner, a short memory helps."

Honestly, I'm a little worried about his size, but with a name like Tyon, how can you go wrong? I seem to remember a 5'11" DE/LB who had long arms and a sweet name doing well here at UofL. Where is that guy now?

The writeup from ESPNU:

Dixon is a very quick and aggressive undersized linebacker with good productivity. Lacks ideal measurables and feel he would need to play on the weakside or in a Bandit/Rover type of role to have success at the next level. Does have longer, stronger arms which allows him to play taller on film and hints of continued physical development. Doesn't always make fast reads but is very quick to the football and takes sharp, direct angles. Closes fast with good acceleration between the white lines. Difficult to outflank to the outside. Has good range on both run and pass support but does appear a bit quicker than fast. Very active to the football and pursues with a high motor that often lets him recover off false steps. Fills hard and fast between the tackles displaying good downhill burst. While he steps up hard between the tackles, he lacks the bulk at this time needed to retain his base at the point of attack. Needs to wrap up more solidly as a tackler. Can get caught up in the wash and let bigger blockers reach him; hand technique is adequate but feel he could get engulfed at the major college level. Will likely need to play outside covered up. Struggles with reads at times and is not very reactive initially for a smaller linebacker. Shows a bit of stiffness and wasted motion changing direction. That said, Dixon swarms to the football on both run and pass support and could be sliding under the BCS radar, particularly if he lands in a heavy, upfield defense.

I'm glad we got him before Cinci did. He will be a 3-year starter for Colerain, which is a very strong, usually nationally-ranked football program.

Jody Demling has him listed as one of the top ten recruits out of KY. Here's a Youtube video with Quan delivering a sweet stiff-arm. Although not a bruising back, his blazing speed would seem to fit into Kragthorpe's system quite well. IMO he has a great first move and gets to the outside quickly. Weaver will have to compete for playing time as Anderson will obviously be the feature back, but he seems built from the same mold as Anderson and will look to contribute in other aspects of the game as well.

It's actually pretty good and there is way more info there than I can present you with in a timely fashion. Nonetheless, I think Harris might be one of Kragthorpe's best recruits to date. He will bring size and experience to a team needing to fill the shoes of a first-round, All-American draft pick.

Simien (I've seen three different ways to spell his first name) is a 6-foot-3, 210-pound junior college safety that Lville picked up for 2009. A Burbank High School (Sacramento, CA.) / College of San Mateo (San Mateo, CA.) product, Simien chose the Cards over Indiana and Memphis (State). Although listed as a SS, Simien may see some time alongside Johnny Patrick at CB as we are still a little green at that position. If he is really as fast as his 40 time shows, he will be a welcomed addition to our defense. You can't teach height....especially to speedy cornerbacks.

The good people at Cardinal Dominance have this video posted from Simien's JUCO team: Terence Simien 2009 6:14 Highlight Video. This guy reads the QB's eyes and has good timing on his hits. I'm interested to see how this two year project turns out. Like Woodney Turenne, I am hoping he will atleast fill some gaps his first year while being a major factor in his final season with the Cards.

Superstar Update: Art Carmody

A Card Chronicle Exclusive: Art Carmody graced us with an update on how he's doing. I just asked him for a quick summary for the fans, but he took it a step further...

About CC: "I can't stress enough how great of a website it is. You guys do a hell of job and I really enjoy reading it. It might be the best website ever made and I would politely ask anyone to prove me wrong."

On life in the South: "Things are going great down here in Shreveport, I am currently working for Chase Bank and playing AF2 football for the Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings (still trying to figure out why we combined two cities for the name, there has got to be some sort of political reason behind it or something). I love to kick so choosing to play AF2 ball while starting a career (hopefully) at Chase has been a lot of fun."

On why The Man keeps holding him down: "I haven't had any NFL looks since last summer with Tampa Bay. It was frustrating but that is just how it is. My lack of kickoff leg strength was the big reason why I haven't had any looks. I had a lot of interest from AFL teams before the league folded this past December and had interest from Edmonton in the CFL until they re-signed their veteran kicker."

And more love to CC: "Card Chronicle has never let down Cardinal fans...Take care and best of luck with everything.

- Art Carmody

P.S. Also, please send my best to Mike Rutherford, I would like to shake his hand one day. Thanks."

So this proves CC isn't just perused by the "Joe Plumbers" of the world, but also by Groza award-winning kickers. Mike should just about be running pantless at work now after reading Art's last line.

Cardinal Nine Swoop In to Save the Day

It's now official. Cards baseball has taken over my fore-brain. This morning I woke up, and the first thing that came into my mind was, "Gee, I wonder if the baseball team won?"

Alright, maybe I didn't say "Gee" and I was tied up last night, so I didn't get to see any scores, but the "Dan McDonnell Nine" have officially got me thinking about getting out the 'ole glove and throwing a few around the backyard. Now don't think less of me (hard to do), but baseball has been pretty much the furthest sport from my mind since I was passed over for the middle school all-star team (Middletown Recreation, if you're in need, i'm still interested). I enjoy a Bats game at Slugger Field every once in a (thirsty thursday) while, and make the occasional Cleveland Indians game with my in-laws, but this marks the first time that I really want to go watch a UofL baseball game. Going back to the super-regional for the 2nd time in 3 years, this team has a chance to be really special.

Quick, name any baseball player from any other Cardinals team pre-2007.......I couldn't. The Cardinal Nine's starting lineup are beginning to become household names like TWill and Brian Brohm. Chris Dominguez, Andrew Clark, Phil Wunderlich, Justin Marks, etc. These guys are making headlines, not only in Louisville, but across the nation. I congratulate Dan McDonnell and Tom Jurich for bringing college baseball to the forefront of Cardinal Athletics. We finally have something to take the sting off of the post-basketball, pre-football stretch that is summer in Louisville.

Go Cards. Hit 'em like Rock 'n Jock baseball on MTV.

Cards fans got a pleasant suprise today as Apollo OL Harris Biven, one of the top prospects out of KY and perhaps the state's best OL man this year, verbally committed to the Cardinals. He is featured on ESPNU's top 150 watch list. This is a big pickup for Steve Kragthorpe's crew who has been looking to regain ground on their in-state recruiting. Biven will more than likely help to anchor the O-line, yet has shown his flexibility to play on both sides of the ball. Congrats to the new Cardinal.
