from Michael Casagrande:

"This has been a great time in my life, I have had the rare opportunity to be able to choose from many great schools that would allow me to get a college degree and continue to play the game that I love. This has been a very difficult decision only because I was able to meet and get to know so many wonderful coaches at so many great universities.

"I have chosen to attend the University of Alabama. I am honored that I will get to learn from Coach Saban and Coach Nussmeier and will get to represent Alabama, the state and the University. I want to thank my coaches at Cottonwood for all they have done for me and mostly to my parents who have made this all possible."

Roll 'Bama Roll OT: Anyone running in the Mercedes-Benz Marathon?

I'll be there running in the Half-Marathon bright and early Sunday morning. It's right next to the Boutwell Auditorium in downtown Birmingham. Mercedes Marathon Weekend . There is also a running expo Friday and Saturday at Boutwell if you feel like looking at expensive running gear and equipment.

I've run up to a 15K once, and have done 10K a few times. Still, this is my first attempt at a half-marathon and I'm getting a tiny bit nervous. Anything past mile 10 should be really fun.

Top quarterback recruit Gunner Kiel, who stunned a lot of people by committing to his home-state Hoosiers in July, is wavering on his commitment and plans to visit other schools, according to reports.

Kiel told Peegs.com that he informed IU head coach Kevin Wilson of that decision on Thursday night. He plans on making an unofficial visit to Notre Dame this weekend to see the Irish play USC in the school's first night game on campus in 20 years.

Following practice, the University of Alabama's Million Dollar Band took part in teaching the fight song, "Yea Alabama," to the freshmen. See Coach Saban, Coach Cochran, and the rest of the team sing the fight song, as well.

Roll 'Bama Roll Mike DuBose on Memphis job

Get To Know The Tigers--Mike DuBose (via SIDMemphis)

Just thought this was an interesting find. I know how many of us feel about the DuBose era (they don't make enough soap to remove the memories). Still, I do like to check in on the former Bama coaches every once in a while to see how they are holding up. I had forgotten that he left Milsap for Memphis, but hey.... I needed a few more words to reach 75.

Last month, when athletic officials from the Southeastern Conference met in Destin, Fla., the annual gathering had an eye-popping moment.

Julie Roe Lach, the N.C.A.A.’s vice president for enforcement, made a presentation to the group, which included every men’s basketball coach, football coach and athletic director in the conference. When she opened up the room for discussion, Auburn’s football coach, Gene Chizik, raised his hand first.

He peppered Roe Lach with a flurry of questions about the N.C.A.A.’s investigation into Cam Newton and why the N.C.A.A. had not publicly announced that the investigation was over. Chizik complained that the inquiry’s open-ended nature had hurt Auburn’s recruiting and he followed up at least three times, leading to a testy exchange.

"You’ll know when we’re finished," Roe Lach told Chizik, according to several coaches who were at the meeting. "And we’re not finished."

Roll 'Bama Roll Heath Shuler running from D.C. To Knoxville?

Looks like the Congressman from North Carolina is sensing bad political tidings, because he is apparently talking to Tennessee about the Athletic Director position left by Mike Hamilton. He is probably going to be subject to some redistricting, which will make his re-election all the more difficult in 2012.

How bad must it be for Democrats in North Carolina if you seek asylum in pre- NCAA hammer UT?

"A HS coach I know very well text to let me know Corey Grant has enrolled at Auburn. The coach is working at AU today, says it's official."

Per Andrew Bone's Twitter of Scout.com

ED: Not so fast on the "official." Per Bone's Twitter:

"On Corey Grant: The news is not official. He is not enrolled at AU just yet, but is working on it. He did leave Alabama two weeks ago."

Writing's on the wall at this point, Grant is more than likely landing at Auburn, but I would be shocked if he was actually granted a release to the Barn. Wherever he lands, he's gone, and it's looking more and more likely that Dee Hart will be getting some quality snaps as a true freshman.

Police tell News 5 Barron lied to police in an attempt to cover for his cousin who left the scene of an accident.

Someone called 911 about 5:00 a.m. to report an abandoned vehicle on I-10 at Michigan Avenue. When the officer arrived, Barron was with the 2008 Chrysler 300, which had hit the retaining wall. Barron told police a man he only knew as "Bull" had taken his car from Shotgun Willies, a night club in the 4100 block of Government Blvd. But during the investigation, police learned Barron's cousin, Jamal Lang, was actually driving the car at the time of the crash. Lang will be issued a citation for leaving the scene of an accident.

Police say after they learned about Lang's involvement, they gave Barron every opportunity to change his story. The arresting officer says he begged Barron to tell the truth, showed him the law about hindering prosecution and explained he would have to arrest him if Barron continued to cover for his cousin. Police say they even got Barron's mother and grandmother to try and convince him. But Barron refused to admit his cousin was driving the car.

Per Mobile TV, Mark Barron's hindering arrest stemmed from covering for a cousin, who wrecked Barron's car, with false statement to police.

Former University of Alabama linebacker Chris Keys told tidesports.com Monday that online blog reports indicating he has made accusations of receiving improper benefits in exchange for signing with the Crimson Tide in 2005 are untrue. In fact, Keys said, reports of his appearance of any kind on an upcoming episode of Home Box Office's Real Sports program are false.

"I haven't even talked to HBO," said Keys, who now resides in Chattanooga, Tenn. "My mom told me about it when she first heard about it, but there isn't anything to it. I've had some people ask me about it, but I don't know what they're talking about."

Roll 'Bama Roll Somebody shot at Rolando McClain

LINK

Silly man.... bullets only make him angry.

Former Alabama linebacker Rolando McClain was uninjured Thursday evening when shots were fired at his SUV, according to a news release just sent out by Decatur police.

One bullet was retrieved from the rear hatch of his Chevy Tahoe after police responded to McClain’s call to emergency dispatchers.

McClain, a Decatur High product, said he was driving down Second Street SW in Decatur when a group of people standing in the 2nd Street intersection started shooting. The bullet did not penetrate the passenger compartment, the release said.

A crime scene technician and detectives responded to the scene and interviewed McClain and his passengers. Anyone with information on the case is encouraged to call the Decatur Police Department at (256) 341-4660.

Isaiah Crowell’s mother said she’s thrilled about their family friend Quintavious Harrow receiving a scholarship offer from Georgia, but not if it comes with any attachments to her son.

"Well, for Quintavious it’s wonderful," Deborah Crowell told me Monday. "But I don’t want them to do it to get Isaiah there. I’m not selling my son’s soul to the devil. This is his decision. If they want to give Quintavious a scholarship, that’s fine. But that can’t have anything to do with Isaiah. He has too much pressure on him as it is and I’m going to lay that on the line with them. We’ll discuss that while we’re up there."

Crowell, No. 1 on the AJC Fab 50 list, will be taking his official visit to Georgia this weekend along with his mother and the rest of his family. So will Harrow, better known as "Cootie" to family and friends. The 5-11, 190-pound linebacker/safety from Carver-Columbus — who is Crowell’s best friend — received a scholarship offer from the Bulldogs last week, his first from any school.

The Harrows and the Crowells, who have known each other since their kids were in kindergarten, just got back from a trip to Tuscaloosa and the University of Alabama this past weekend. They left very impressed with coach Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide.

"It was wonderful," said Mrs. Crowell, who will also accompany her son and his final visit to Auburn on Jan. 28. "They kept us busy, but we had fun. They had everything planned out and stuck by it all weekend. My husband and I had a wonderful time and Isaiah did, too."

As Isaiah Crowell prepared to leave Columbus for Tuscaloosa and his official visit to Alabama Friday afternoon, Georgia was making moves behind the scenes to try to ensure that the state’s No. 1 player comes their way.

The Bulldogs offered a scholarship to Crowell’s teammate and close friend Quintavious Harrow on Thursday, Carver-Columbus coach Dell McGee confirmed. Better known as "Cootie" to his family and friends, Harrow (5-foot-10, 180 pounds) played a linebacker/safety position known as the "pony" in the Tigers’ 3-5-3 defense. He’s expected to played defensive back in college.

"It’s good to see Quintavious get a great offer like UGA," McGee said.

By all accounts, Georgia is the only school from which Harrow has received an offer so far. The only reference to him among the recruiting services is an account of him running a 4.46-second 40-yard dash — pretty impressive — at the Scout Showcase combine in Atlanta last summer.

Roll 'Bama Roll Reports of Edsall to Maryland a possibility ....

Connecticut's Randy Edsall front-runner for Terps job

Am I the only one who sees Randy Edsall as the new Jim Grobe?

"Oh, he's done so much at UConn! They are middle of the road in a horrible conference... but he's turned them into winners!" Guess what Grobe is doing now... oh yeah, he's been at home the last two seasons while others bowl.

He's not a bad coach.... but I think he gets over-hyped for developing Connecticut in a conference that's weaker than the Mountain West.

Sounds promising for Alabama. Makes you wonder though.... if we get Hart and Hill, where does that leave with with Crowell? Is it a sign that he's Athens bound?

Looks like McElwain didn't get the job

over 1 year ago Fum_tiny DocFumbles 7 comments

University of Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain has interviewed for the head coaching position at Colorado University, the Denver Post reported.

McElwain has been UA's offensive coordinator for three seasons, but has reportedly interviewed for head coaching positions in previous off seasons, including the San Jose State vacancy a year ago.

Former CU star Eric Bieniemy, an assistant coach with the Minnesota Vikings, is considered a leading candidate to be named for the job and has also interviewed. Other candidates, according to the Post, are interim CU coach Brian Cabral and former CU coach Bill McCartney.

Random picture I found that seems kinda cool. Bear, George Steinbrenner, Billy Martin, and some other guy I can't recognize.

Would've been better to post this after Steinbrenner passed, but the historical sports nerd in me still finds this to be pretty cool.
