McCoven MLB 13 Whatever Thread

Since we're switching to the month-at-a-time-open model, I'm not going to be as heavy-handed on wrangling at the end of each month. It's going to be on the league at-large to keep each other accountable and keep games getting played, because the alternative is that if I DO police it, we now run the risk of having large swaths of games just get simmed. With as many as will now be open, resolve/reset is no longer a thing. I'm not going to close and re-open entire months, so my view right now is that we just play until either everybody has their games in for a given month or a sufficient number have completed their games that we can sim the rest and move on.

We have, effectively, two AI owners right now. kaliber said he didn't think he could keep up with the demands of the league and Miami gotta Miami. I don't, at this point, object to people playing their games against AI teams. I don't know how the rest of the league feels about that. It just feels like we're at the stage where, between the owners we're down and the realistic likelihood of recruiting either to fill those roles or any other attrition, people playing against AI teams is probably not something to get worked up over. Feel free to chime in. If the rest of the league is adamant against playing AI teams, I'll continue to sim those.

I'm not going to do specific subthreads for each series anymore. Not with this many series in play each period. So, again, the responsibility is on league members to look at their schedule, compare it with the list of owners below, and make your arrangements in the thread. I would ask that when you post looking for your partner, you use the team matchup (such as Los Angeles/Colorado) in the subject line so that your opponent can easily identify when you are looking to make arrangements.

Finally, even though this thread is up, please wait until you see an update from me to try to play your games. I'm in the 'reset' part of the resolve/reset cycle, and with something like 4 series per team involved here, this shit could take the rest of the day. Feel free to start making arrangements for your series, however; you can tell which they are because the game should be labeled either 'playable' (if you check after I've reset your series) or 'resolved' (if I haven't gotten to you yet).

You just won't be able to play until I've finished opening the month up. Also, the month's final series appears to be a four-gamer; two games this month and two next. All will be open, obviously, but make sure you look at the first two days of next month for those games when you're finishing that series.

McCoven MLB 13 League Pulse-Taking Thread

So a handful of individuals in the Week Seven thread have expressed some discontent regarding scheduling and the like. Between that and the loss of kaliber, bringing us down to 22 human owners, I thought maybe we ought to take the pulse of the league, see where people are at.

My question is, where do we want to go from here?

Option #1: continue as we are, with whatever pros and cons that carries.

Option #2: I *can* open everything up for just a 'play whatever whenever' league, but that would take some time to do. I would have to basically resolve/reset everything up to the last series, which would be probably close to 700 games total.

Option # 3 would be to just drop the 'weekly' part of the league and only advance once everybody's got their games in. Difficulty: I don't have the ability to open up individual series, so things would proceed exactly as fast as our slowest owner. Responsibility would then devolve upon the rest of the league to stay active in the threads to keep apprised of the status of the series.

Option #4: good job good effort everyone and we put a metaphorical bullet in the back of the league's head.

Gonna hold off doing anything on the rollover until everybody's had a chance to chime in.

Only games what got simmed were the ones involving the Marlins. Everything else got resolved/reset, so the 8 teams whose week 5 series didn't get played still have those available to play. Note that week 5 and week 6 games will be simmed at the rollover.

Fleyhing Squvirvel is back. Welcome back, FS! kaliber posted in yesterday's game thread, albeit merely once. I'm hoping we can corral him back this way.

Reminders: if we get down to deadline time and you're trying to finish games that would be simmed rather than resolve/reset, I'm willing to work with you, but there has to be sufficient notice given. I'm two hours later than most of you and the rollover takes a while. A game that starts flush up against the deadline is a game that I have to sit and wait for completion before I can do anything.

By the same token, if your game is eligible for resolve/reset and you're wanting to jump in at the deadline, please don't. I can prioritize the reset of games awaiting imminent play so that you can play while the rest of the reset is happening. Just say 'hey, DFiPL, me and want to get a game in,' and I'll make sure to hit that one first so that you don't get eaten by the dreaded server request monster.

Final reminder: if you've been having the AI monkey with your rotation/lineup, it may be because you have holes in them. If you set your lineup/rotation, you may see that the monkey business there goes away. I encourage everybody to take a look at that.

The series subthreads are coming. Since there are 3 weeks of games, that means 24 subthreads. Might take a bit. For those of you who have been away - Fleyhing and kaliber - the subthread for your games is where you'll want to work out scheduling arrangements to get them played. That hopefully keeps the overall thread reasonably well organized.

McCoven MLB 13 the Show League Week Six Thread

Week Six is upon us. I'm dropping boomburro from the league. He's had exactly zero participation, and I'm out of fucks to give. If anybody knows someone who's a) interested and b) is willing to participate, both in the league and in the weekly threads, point 'em our direction, please.

kaliber and Fleyhing Squvirvel I'm not quite to that point on yet.

Lessee, what else. Oh, end-of-week games. If you're trying to complete a series that would otherwise be simmed - so, for example, any of the Week Five series which enter Week Six still unfinished - I am willing to make allowances for that, but there needs to be sufficient notice in the thread. Please remember I'm two hours later than most of you, and it takes some time for me to roll the league over.

If your game is a current series - Week Six in this context - and thus eligible for resolve/reset, for the love of all that's holy, don't start your game 15 minutes before midnight (or after if I haven't completed the rollover yet). I can't advance the league while I'm waiting on that, and that makes DFiPL grumpy. If you're on and want to get those games in at the deadline, let me know and I'll reset them first so that you're not waiting forever. Just have some consideration going the other way for me, also. It's appreciated.

That's all I can think of right now, which I guess is a pretty good sign. I've been monitoring the trades that have been proposed, and while none of them have fit PE's rigid formula, none of them have been trades I would have shot down, either.

Oh, one other thing that popped up in the Week Five thread: if you've been having the AI monkey with your rotation/lineup, it may be because you have holes in them. If you set your lineup/rotation, you may see that the monkey business there goes away. I encourage everybody to take a look at that.

Finally, scheduling: I know this is a holiday weekend and some folks may have plans away from the PS3. That's cool. Thursday midnight is going to be a soft deadline to account for that. If completion proceeds normally, I'll process normally. If the holiday weekend looks to have put a hitch in completion, I'll likely extend the deadline by a day or two. I'll give additional guidance on this if necessary as we get closer to next Thursday.

McCoven MLB 13 the Show Week 5 Thread

All y'all know the drill. If you have pre-existing games open, try to get those out of the way before you advance to the next series as a courtesy to your fellow owners and to keep the fatigue monkey from flinging unwanted poo. Teams which had series last week with the complete no-shows, I'm not going to hold you to that since there's no way to know when/if you'll be able to get those games in. Best advice for you is that you may want to look at rearranging your rotation to account for the fatigue monkey if those games have to get simmed after you play your interleague two-gamer.

I'm going to be thread-diving in the older threads to see if I can find out what's up with kaliber and Fleyving. I'm increasingly skeptical we're ever going to hear from boomburro/whatever his SBN handle was again.

Trading activity appears to be kicking up. It looks like how we're handling it is, trades automatically process if not rejected within 24 hours. Most trade negotiations seem to be happening in-thread, which is fine. If you do negotiations outside of the thread, please have one owner post and another owner confirm if agreement is reached so that we know to be on the lookout for incoming transaction activity.

Fair warning that players received in trade get assigned to AAA by the game even if there are open MLB spots. If you don't activate your acquisitions and you play a game with a short roster as a result, there will be no sympathy from on high, since resetting a game so you can re-play it with a full roster would cause a fatigue double whammy to the other side.

Some of you have been posting schedules and such for week 5 in the week 4 thread while waiting on my lazy ass to wake up and post this. That's fine. I encourage that! I would request that you re-post your schedules in the appropriate places in this thread also so that nothing gets lost in the shuffle.

Finally, I would like to congratulate you all. Of the 22 games I had to deal with last night, 15 were directly related to the three teams which have been either partially or complete no-shows in the last three game weeks. That means of the rest of the league, there were just seven games left incomplete, and only one of those was a game which ultimately had to be simmed rather than resolved/reset. Good job, everybody. Considering 6 of the 7 from Week Three unrelated to the absent owners were ultimately completed, I have faith that the six incomplete Week Four games will also get done rather than resolved.

McCoven Week Three Scheduling and Trade Thread

So we're trying a couple new things this week, kids and squids.

In order to make it easier for us to tell who is playing whom and whether scheduling is going on (to make it easier and faster when it's time to advance), positiveuphemism will be making SL's in this thread for each matchup, including the incomplete Week Two matchups. The *only* responses to those SL's should be scheduling efforts, please.

Game chatter, trade proposals, and general league chitchat is still welcome in this thread, but should be in the form of separate posts. Let's keep the matchup posts clean and preserve my sanity.

If you're on this list, please try to get those series finished ASAP. While you *can* play your Week Three series before completing those - and given schedules it's understandable if it happens that way - I really recommend avoiding that if at all possible, just because we don't know how fatigue/injuries would handle that and I'd rather not step into a nasty landmine the hard way.

Finally, I'd really, really like us to get an owner for the Royals, who are now 8-0 following successive simulated sweeps. Maybe this is just the freak luck of the draw, but that's weirding me out. If you know anybody who'd be interested, have them sign up and holler.

McCoven MLB 13 League: Week Two Trade and Scheduling Thread

Couple housekeeping things to bring up here.

1) I'm still not sure what we've decided on trade approval. That seemed to fizzle.

2) Royals are available, and we could use an owner there. Beat the bushes!

3) Sims going forward: Okay, so I ran some tests today when it became clear that not everything was going to get tidied up before I pushed the button. Two things I discovered. The first is that 'resolving' games incurs no fatigue penalty. Thus, I am only going to use this in cases where a series is not complete when the button-pushing time rolls around, and both parties request a short extension to finish. What will happen in those cases is that I will resolve the series, push the button, and then reset the resolved games. That will leave the affected teams with open games to play from their previous series as well as their current series. Those games will not remain open for the entire series period, and I will not go further back than the period from which we are advancing. If you missed games three series ago, tough shit.

In all other circumstances, I will be simming the games, instead. Yeah, it sucks that you might lose a game (or a series) to someone who hasn't been available. The problem is though, it's a rock and a hard place. The point has been made that 'resolving' a series in favor of the available owner could present a competitive balance issue to the rest of the league, and that simply 'splitting' the series is unfair to the available owner. Further, my tests from today showing that 'resolve' doesn't incur a fatigue penalty means that resolving the series would, potentially, give an owner wins without the attendant fatigue to his players, and that's a competitive balance issue all its own.

Life's a bitch, basically. So resolve will only be used when both parties are in agreement over the need for an extra couple days to finish their series. In all other cases, 'simulate' will be used.

Further reminder: do not use lobby challenges. Issue challenges from the schedule - you can issue both practice and competitive challenges (for open games) from there.

I think that's everything. Leave a LOLDFiPL if I've forgotten anything.

Life's a bitch, basically. So resolve will only be used when both parties are in agreement over the need for an extra couple days to finish their series. In all other cases, 'simulate' will be used.

Further reminder: do not use lobby challenges. Issue challenges from the schedule - you can issue both practice and competitive challenges (for open games) from there.

McCoven MLB 13 League: Week One Trade/Scheduling Thread

After examining what happened with the Astros/Angels game, and attempting to see if it was possible to play my own future games (it's not), I went ahead and reset that result. It should not have happened - it should not have been POSSIBLE - and I would recommend both sides chalk that one up to experience. I can't do anything about the injury to Scherzer, but he's only out a day anyway (and I believe BokoLife said Scherzer's his third starter), so he should, in theory, be healthy enough to make his regularly scheduled start.

I don't know if fatigue will be a factor, but I can't do anything about that, either.

LET THIS BE A LESSON: DO NOT, EVEN IF IT LOOKS AS IF YOU CAN, ATTEMPT TO PLAY GAMES THAT ARE NOT MARKED 'AVAILABLE' BECAUSE IT MAY FUCK UP YOUR ROTATION. The way things are currently set up, it looks like we're advancing one series at a time. That one is on me, because I thought '1' meant '1 series ahead of pace' when I set it up. I had meant to set it up in such a way that the current and next series would be available. That doesn't appear to be the case.

Stick with what we've got. You can play anybody you want as practice, but if you're practicing to get the hang of timing and shit, I recommend you do so outside of the league. It's possible to send practice challenges in-game, and that may very well be what mudlife did, but the game didn't treat it as practice.

That's how I intend to treat any other examples of this that pop up. The result will be reset - you'll still have to play it anyway - but you'll likely have to deal with any injuries that happen as a result. I figure the risk of those injuries and the fact that the result won't count anyway ought to be sufficient deterrent to keep this from happening again.

I'm just really glad the 'oh shit this happened' injury is only listed as 1 day, so that Boko isn't dealing with a much larger issue.

Here you go, kids and squids. Let's try to keep scheduling and general discussion separate from one another. There is an in-game trade application, so you don't need to work the details of your trades out in public here. You can just see, generally, who might have an interest in your player here and then work it out in game.

Note that at some point we need to figure out trade approval. I see two options.

1) positiveuphemism rules on NL trades, I rule on AL trades, and we figure it out if cross-league trades happen.

2) A small committee (four people, say). The way this would work is that good faith is assumed in trading - it would take an affirmative majority to overturn a trade. That's 3/4 in ordinary situations; in the event that one of the committee members is involved in the trade, that reduces to 2/3. If two members are involved, an extraordinary measures clause gets invoked, and the league as a whole gets to vote yea or nay.

Feel free to chime in with your thoughts below and indicate which option you like better.

Additionally, bigboneded, make sure you're patched, and make sure your online pass is redeemed - the game won't let me invite you until this is the case, and I need to cut off signups at some point here so people can look at their draft boards.

The league is ready to be created and to start sending out invites. There is a 1.21 patch available that you must download before you can do shit online, so if you haven't played MLB 13 recently, fire that up and get patched so that you don't run into issues come the draft.

I have sent friend requests to everybody currently in the league. Please also check to make sure you've accepted them so I don't have any issues inviting you into your team slot, and please make sure you friend other league members as well so we don't run into any potential issues getting games played.

The draft will be Sunday at 5 pm. 22 owners, 40 picks, 880 total players. That's a 13+ hour draft if everybody takes the full 60 seconds per pick. So help me god if everybody takes 60 seconds per pick for all 40 picks I will set you on fire and roast S'mores over your screaming remains.

DH is, despite my better judgment, on. I set trade approval to off, which means preliminarily, positiveuphemism and myself will have trade approval.

I set it to four playoff teams - that's one per division, plus the wild card.

League size and scheduling are going to be issues. See this post for details.

So we're doing final liftoff checks here. This thread, which I shall keep updated, contains: the results of the team draft (at this moment incomplete?) as well as PSN user names and other pertinent details. Since it looks like we're rocking a 20 team league, I'm going to divide teams into divisions here. This is the place where, if you have an issue with your league and/or divisional placement, speak up, make trades, whatever. Just be quick about it.

The season will be 82 games long.

For the purposes of this post, I'm going to refer to the two subleagues and their subdivisions by names (which I can't put in the game, but it will help with the cognitive dissonance if there's geographical weirdness).

The draft date positiveuphemism has been throwing around is Sunday 4/14 at 5pm Pacific. I...don't like that time, particularly since I'm in the Central time zone. If 4/14 is the date that works best for everyone, I would very much like to move that earlier a few hours (especially since it's not football season so there's no damn college/NFL action to distract people).

If it absolutely has to be an evening draft for y'all, Monday would work about a bazillion times better from where I'm sitting.

Talk amongst yourselves. Get it figured out. Start friending one another if you haven't already. The divisions above are listed by team, McCoven handle, PSN handle, and chat capability. I know you're all smart people and figured that out already but yeah.

I think I did okay on divisions; it helped that 40% of the league wanted an AL East or NL West team. That said, since travel Isn't A Thing(tm), I will permit trades up until the point at which I create the league (which will be once we have a 20th owner and once we have a draft day/time finalized). The exception: the Giants have to stay in the Russell Martin Division because ha ha ha ha. And also because Dodger rivalry but mostly because ha ha ha ha.

McCoven MLB 13: the Show Online League?

UPDATE WITH PERTINENT INFORMATION: The deadline to lock your spot in and have the game in hand is Friday, April 12. That's 3 weeks from today. In fact, I would lock in by Thursday, April 11 so that we can send out invitations on 4/12; that gives everybody 4/12 and 4/13 to accept their invitations. The draft would be Sunday, April 14. Time TBD.

Discussions are underway regarding team selection. positiveuphemism suggested a team draft. We can work with that; everybody gets a number in order of when they joined the league, and then numbers are drawn from a hat until everybody has a team draft spot. Per positiveuphemism's suggestion (not sure if serious or not), the player draft would then happen in reverse order of the team draft.

A complementary idea I just had - discuss below - would be kind of a blind Rotisserie thing. Everybody gets a certain number of points, which they can bid on draft position in both the team and the player draft; owners would have to balance their desire for a particular team with their desire to be in position to draft a particular player. I feel like that would give league members a little more control over which team/first rounder they wind up with than the luck of the draw.

To reiterate for people seeing this thread for the first time, this here's a FanPost for folks who might be interested in an online league with MLB 13: the Show; note that this particular league is for PS3 owners, since the only Cross-Play between PS3 and PlayStation Vita (BECAUSE WE HAVE HORDES OF VITA-ONLY PLAYERS HERE I'M SURE) is the Home Run Derby.

So, at this point, a few questions:

We currently have 11 entrants. As many as 19 spots remain open. My hope is that we end up with an even number of entrants, be that 12 or 30.
What options are we looking at? positiveuphemism suggested a draft - which is probably the fairest way to ensure that non-DFIPL McCoven have the opportunity to have at least one significant Giant on their roster, on reflection. I haven't looked to see whether there are any options specifically for draft order (is it forced random, manually editable, etc). I probably need to do this at some point since it looks like a draft is what's happening.

I'd lean against that option since it risks the possibility of someone with time on their hands playing a shitload of games early and discouraging the rest of the division/league if s/he runs out to a commanding won-loss record before everybody else has had a chance to play their games. That's how leagues die. "Series" schedules have an expiration date on the current series - it must be played, however many games are in the series, within 1-7 days of the series becoming "active." Flex schedules work fundamentally the same way, but games in future series can be made available to account for schedules. That might be as few as one series ahead of the current, it might be as many as 30. All three types have both 'auto' and 'manual' expiry; 'auto' is remorseless. It is a machine. If your games aren't done, tough titty: the server resolves unplayed games and time marches on. The commissioner, or designated lackey, pushes the button to advance series under 'manual' control. I don't know if that means there's wiggle room on length or if that just means the commissioner can advance the season if all series get completed before the deadline.
For deadlines, we have the option of 1 to 30 days per series.
Season length: 14, 29, 40, 80, 120 or ~~162~~ games. With 11 owners in, 14 seems laughable. 29 is probably also too few. 162, on the other hand, is likely going to be too many to sustain, especially between real-life schedules and the impermanent state of the game's servers (i.e., this isn't like OOTP where we can play forever). I think the sweet spot for a smaller league is going to be 40, or 80 if we get greater participation.
League structure: Round Robin or Divisional. I'd prefer the divisional format, personally. It allows for as many as 10 playoff teams (just like real life), compared with a cap of 8 in round robin. Keeps more people invested in the league. The Round Robin league permits either 2-5 series of 1 game each per opponent, or one series of 1 or 3 games per opponent.
Player draft: positiveuphemism wants to run a league tomorrow to see how the draft works for no-shows, AI teams, etc. Indicate below if you're willing to be a guinea pig with any of that. The draft is a live draft, and happens within 1-7 days of the league getting activated, so there's a fair possibility that not everybody will be able to show up. To my knowledge, there's no ability to rank the draft class according to preference if you can't make it. There are three timer settings: 30, 60 and 90 seconds per selection.
Trades and free agents are semi-decoupled; any trade-permitting league has to permit free agent signings also, but you can turn off trades and allow free agents. Alternatively, you can go way hardcore since you're drafting 40 players and turn off both trades and free agents (I wouldn't recommend doing this unless we kibosh injuries).
Skill settings: I think for league setup, the variance is to filter out players who are too n00b or too awesome for public leagues. For this league, since it'll be private, that shouldn't matter. I'm inclined to suggest that in order to facilitate the greatest possible enjoyment by the members of the league, we go with reasonably non-complicated controls. It may, who knows, be possible for masochists to set higher difficulty ratings for themselves even if the league is set to 'beginner,' say. Who knows?
I don't think the league can be expanded once it starts; I finally found a thing in the 'about' part of online leagues that says leagues can have AI teams and dropped users can be replaced, so I'm betting that when a user is dropped, that team shifts to AI control until a new user takes over. Thus, it seems logical (although I still can't be 100% certain) that we could start the league with however many users but leave a couple just-in-case spots for possible later additions.

Not sure how AI teams would be handled if we went the live draft route, however, so keep that in mind.
