Today's headlines at mlbtraderumors.com are a deal for Coco Crisp to the Royals and reaction to the Dempster trade including a link to Al's post about Dempster being a great clubhouse guy etc. Mixed reaction to trade and I am sure many hear will feel vindicated that Sabrematics people don't like it.

Personally I kind of wanted Crisp but since he does not hit for power and is not a leadoff guy I did not see the Cubs going after him

Zell to sell a smaller share of the Cubs ?

Ok new article says Zell may consider selling a smaller share ( down to 50% ?) of the Cubs as a way to do the sale as the credit crunch is killing his ability to get top dollar. Odd on the same day other articles claim Cuban can't get them as he is rumored to have the highest offer.As always my links don't work. Some day I will figure it out but will probably get a cell phone or DVD player before that.

Maddux to sign with RANGERS

Too bad I really wanted him and we sure could have used him. Well OK it is MIKE Maddux and he is signing up as Rangers pitching coach but most of you would have preferred him to Rothschild . I like Rothschild but I would tend to prefer any member of the Maddux family. Needless to say Rangers pitching coach is one of the more thankless jobs in baseball.

As for Mad Dog, it appears the ball is in his court if he wants to come back for another season it appears likely that both the Dodgers and Padres would offer him a contract albeit one at a lot less than last years 10 million. The Padres themselves and Los Angeles media have both suggested that Maddux as a player coach would be a good idea. I don't see that myself but if Moyer who throws even softer and is over 3 years older can play another season I would love to see Greg go for it.

There have been some grumblings about the Obama 30 minute commercial pushing back the starting time of tonight's Word Series game but according to Fox that is not exactly the case.

Our first pitch for the world series is usually around 8:30 anyway – so we didn’t push back the game, it was really just about suspending the pre-game -- you know, Joe Buck," said the account executive, Joe Coppola. Regardless of anyone's political beliefs I think we are united in our disgust of Fox baseball announcers. Speaking as a liberal I would gladly consider voting for any conservative who could promise to get JOE MORGAN OFF THE AIR PERMANENTELY.

I don't know about the rest of you but I got and am still getting a lot of sympathetic and worried phone calls and e mails from friends , business associates and strangers. Now I probably get a lot more since I live in New York where being a Cubs fanatic is not the norm and many if not most of my customers and colleagues know how insane I am. My family was worried when I slept in on Saturday because I did not pick up the phone ( just tired and not directly related to the Cubs believe it or not). I got e mails from a college friend who works at the UN, a number of librarians around the country who know me through work, film programmers ( ditto), old friends from Chicago etc . I think the nicest thing that happened though was on Sunday as I was walking past Penn Station wearing my Cubs jacket and a young woman looked at me and said in very sweet voice, " Sorry, Cub fan". I genuinely appreciate all the concern and reaching out. I think I tend to take this better than others because I try not to get my hopes up to high but I do appreciate the empathy from people especially many that only know me via internet /work and or not at all.

What about Lou ?

I know his contract has already been renewed but I am curious how the "Blow it up" and Lou is genius ( MBNIU) crowd feels now that he is 0-6 in the post season for the Cubs and Mr. Walks clog the bases got us to within one game of a pennant with a MUCH INFERIOR TEAM ( and ones plagued with injuries after that). I am not a fan of Dusty's but as regular readers know I have been after Lou since April. So is none of the post season failure his fault ? Yes I know he didn't play but neither did his hand picked roster which he was supposed to inspire.At least poor Scott Eyre gets to go to the post season without Lou.
