Braves interested in Nats IF

+

It's purely a rumor at this point, but what do you guys think of Gonzalez? He has played every IF spot (but mostly 2B, SS and 3B) and has one game in the outfield. If you like him, what do you think the Braves should give up to get him?

John Smoltz, Golfer

Looks like Smoltzie is giving golf another go, this time on the Nationwide Tour.

But now, with rent-an-outfielder Rick Ankiel gone, McLouth is back atop the depth chart. Should he falter, the Braves' only in-house option is one-time prospect Jordan Schafer, who has spent the last two years in the Wilderness and has either lost his compass or doesn't know how to use one.

Rob Neyer's Braves Spring Training Question of the Day The article doesn't much that we haven't already covered, but I thought quote was interesting.

Joe Pos' guide to offensive stats, aka 'The first thing every new TC'er should read'

10

Joe Pos does one of the best jobs I've seen supporting the case for advanced stats. He explains some of the big ones and uses batting average as a case for why the traditional stats leave a lot to be desired. This article might be the clearest, best explanation I've seen -- not surprising considering it's from maybe the best baseball writer around. It should be required reading for TC membership h/t goes to BtBS.

Fangraphs Top-10 Braves Prospects

1

Nothing too surprising here. They seem to lean toward MLB-readiness vs. ceiling.

Stark on Fredi's first home game

+

Nice little article about the transition, or almost lack thereof, of Bobby to Fredi. Quote: "Then, this spring, at least until the games started, the two Braves managers of past and present had lunch with the two Braves general managers of past and present, John Schuerholz and Frank Wren, nearly every day." ...what I would do to be at one of those lunches...

Bizarre Saltalamacchia story

12

Here's a story from Gordon Edes about our former catcher/prospect overcoming some psychological issues. Usually, I'm all for getting help when you need it, but this story seems a little bizarre to me.

Venters and Kimbrel may share closers spot

5

I hope no one else has posted this elsewhere (didn't see it). I think is the first time (I've seen) Fredi say that using both guys in the ninth is a possibility.

Stark's Most Underrated

9

This isn't specifically Braves related, but I thought it might provide for a good debate. Jayson Stark released his yearly most underrated team. In a tweet, he said he considered Martin, but instead went with Ian Kinsler, while TC's favorite Nats third and first basemen did make it. What do you guys think?

Kris Benson Retires

+

Former Tiger Kris Benson calls it quits. It's too bad that his pro career didn't turn out like his college career.

Sickels gives monetary rankings to farm systems

Not surprisingly, our pitching prospects are twice as valuable as our hitters. The Rays look great and it's a sad, sad time to be an Astros fan.

Uggla deal may be more expensive and may come soon

34

Quote: "By the way, since we first reported that Uggla was closing in on a five-year, $61 million deal, talks have slowed as he sought a few more dollars. But a deal should get done the first week of January." Found it on MLBTR.

Now I appreciate Maddux-Glavine-Smoltz even more

+

Fox did a photo gallery of the top-10 pitching rotations of all-time. The new Philly rotation clocked in at #4 with the '97 Braves coming in at #1. Two thoughts: those IP numbers for the big three are RIDICULOUS and now I kinda wish just one of them had gotten three more wins for an even 1k combined.

Cuban to fund football playoff?

2

What do you guys think? Good idea or bad? If it went head to head with the BCS, would you prefer Clemson accept a bid to the Orange Bowl or the playoff?

This is a guess, not a scoop, because no one will confirm it. But no team fits profile of Cliff Lee's mystery team more than the #Phillies. ----- #Phillies always positioned themselves as team for Lee if he'll take fewer guaranteed yrs. Full theory for ESPN Insiders http://es.pn/edpLi9

Stark Twitter Page Obviously, this doesn't even qualify as a rumor since it is just conjecture on Stark's part, but I still thought it was interesting. What do you guys think of the (remote) possibility of a Halladay-Lee-Oswalt-Hamels starting rotation? Which would you rather have -- those four now or Maddux-Glavine-Smoltz in their prime? [Edit] According to MLBTR: Heyman reports that Phil is trying to unload Blanton and Rosenthal and CSNPhilly.com both report the Phillies are in fact in the running.

Golden Hurricane

Not the flashiest hire, but it might work out. What do you guys think?

Jayson Stark had some interesting tweets about Frenchy. He may even be coming back to the division: "With Werth officially gone #Phillies looking harder at RH OF options. #Braves people say Charlie Manuel has been asking about Jeff Francoeur " "One source says Manuel feels confident that he can "fix" Francoeur if #Phillies sign him. " "#Royals also picked up pace on Francoeur b/c they're aware #Phillies are on him. #Rockies also in. Francoeur has to weigh playing vs winning " "I hear #Phillies have told Francoeur same thing RT @ryanlawrence21 Werth was at similar career crossroad (to Francoeur) when coming to Phils "

Dan Shulman, Orel and Bobby V. Not sure how I feel about this (I actually like Bobby V. from the limited times I've seen him and I am lukewarm about Orel) but it can't possibly be worse than Miller and Morgan.

Brian Wilson Petition

First Betty White, now Brian Wilson. After the Machine, I think this would be a good idea.

Mets GM answers questionss

+

As most of you probably know, the Mets hired a new GM this week -- Sandy Alderson. I haven't seen anything on TC about it, so I thought I'd post this video where SA answers questions from fans and ask what you guys think about it? I'd say the Mets seem to have made a good choice. He seems competent and has a good track record. If I were a Met fan, I'd be pretty optimistic, though I would be a little worried that he has been out of the game for too long. With that said, I have read other places that he was one of the first GMs to start using advanced stats and such, so maybe he in fact will be prepared.

Stark on Cox

3

Stark does a good job of painting a picture of how historic Bobby's career has been. [Edit] I thought this was an interesting quote from Chipper: "The people who come here for a little bit of time and have aspirations of going somewhere else -- or the guys who come up and have only known Bobby Cox and are about to become a free agent -- I always tell them, 'The grass is not greener.' And they find that out. It took Gary Sheffield literally three weeks of spring training. After he left here and went to the Yankees, we played them in spring training. And he walked up to me in batting practice and said, 'Man, did I screw up. I didn't know how good I had it.'

This has nothing to do with the Braves, but as a baseball fan and a tech geek, this story is really cool. Thought some of you might find it interesting as well.

Creepy Face Drawings of MLB Teams based on stats

Umm...I'm not really sure what to say about this...just thought I would share this link (which I stole from AA).

We've just got to assume Chipper's part of our club [next year]. One good thing about the way we're put together is, we've got a lot of versatility. Prado and Infante play a lot of different positions. So we'll see what happens. But one thing we know is, first base is not an option, because [ballyhooed prospect] Freddie Freeman is coming. So we'll see where we are and hope it all works out.

Frank Wren in Jayson Stark's Latest Column There is also a good quote about Wags and a good quote from Diaz in the column.

I still think the Phillies are the team to beat [in the NL East].

John Smoltz on Mike and Mike in the Morning What do you guys think of Smoltzie picking the Phillies this late in the season?

Stark Analysis of Oswalt Trade

+

Not directly about the Braves, but of course, the Oswalt trade is important to us. I thought Stark did a pretty good job analyzing what the Oswalt trade means this year.
