Because I was driving home after the long weekend, I didn't get a chance to watch/listen to the game. Was this another case of can't run the ball, so let's do dump passes passes to the flats. This is what I see:

We were outgained 537 - 169.

We had 8 first downs, the had 33.

We had 38 total plays, they had 83 total plays = WTF happened here.

We averaged 4.4 yards/play, they averaged 6.5.

Looking at the last two points, I just can't see how they had 45 more plays adn averaged 2.1 more yards per play. That is just crazy.

Let's look at some things that could be good:

Forte and AP averaged the same yard/rush = 3.4

Cutler had a higher completion %.

What to do with Marshall?

With all the talk about need of bullpen help, what do you all expect to do with Marshall. Will he be in contention for the 5th starting job again, or be strickly middle/long relief.

As I see it, we have Marmol closing, Garbow and Guzman setting up. That leaves Marshall, maybe Spellcheck, Patton, Berg, Atkins. Who are going to be our long relief guys? With the addition of Parker and Gaub to the 40, it is possible that they could make the 25 given great spring training. If Gaub becomes the LOOGY that we were all saying we needed before the start of last season, that gives us 3 lefties in the pen.

Given that he has done well in the relief role, is he trade bait? What says BCB.

Halladay, what would it take. I have read a few "rumors" over the past few days, and it seems that maybe the Cubs would be able to get him if they offered the right package. So here goes my weak attempt to create a MLB The Show type of trade:

Cubs:

Bradley, Lee, Dempster, Vitters, Jay Jackson, and maybe a AAA OF.

Blue Jays:

Halladay, Encarnacion, Wells

The Cubs could then move Rami over to 1B, Encarnacion can roam around at 3B, and we can have the most expensive OF in history. The Blue Jays get Bradley (DH more than OF), Lee can play 1B (Overbay can also DH when Bradley isn't), and an innings eater in Dempster. Vitter's can play 3B for them in a few years, Jackson can possible replace their front of the rotation guy in a few years, and they can have a potential OF this year or next year. What says the BCB fans?

Watching Baseball Tonight last night, John Kruk was suggesting leaving Gorzelanny in the rotation, and moving Dempster into the closer role he had a few years back.

I know yesterday's win was great, so we have an extremely small sample size for Gorzelanny as a Cub. He did look quite good though. If he were stay in the rotation, that would give the rotation 2 lefties (when Lilly comes back) and 3 righties. That seems like a good balance to me. It also allows Marshall to stay in his role withouth having to be stretched out. Dempster was a pretty good closer, but he did have his problems here an there. Maybe it would give Gregg some time to get his head cleared up and back into a more effective role. What says BCB???

If BCB could decide, who would you rather have on our rotation? Roy Halladay or Jake Peavy?

Halladay: 10-2, 2.97 era, 1.09 whip, 98 K, 17 bb, 3 CG, .250 baa

Peavy: 6-6, 3.97 era, 1.19 whip, 92 K, 28 bb, 1 CG, .228 baa

I would rather have Halladay because of his ability to finish games. In 271 MLB starts, he has had 43 complete games. Peavy only has 7 complete games in 212 starts.

What do you think about Aubrey Huff?

Speculating here. Ok, we all know we have lack of depth at 3B. I read yesterday that Huff will probably be on the block before the trade deadline. He is listed at 1B, but has play quite a bit of 3B, as well as both outfield spots.

The dude can hit pretty darn well. For whatever reason, the Orioles and Cubs love to make trades with eachother. Because Baltimore is in the AL, we have value for them with either Hoff or Fox, who could fill in as a DH or 1B. Heck, maybe they would even take Miles. What does the BCB people think?

Who is Blake Parker and where did he come from? Possible help in the pen???

I was looking at AAA stats for Iowa, and saw that hey have a good looking closer, at least on paper.

This guys stat line is great (0.75 ERA, 7 saves, 14 Ks in 12 ip, 5 bb, .183 baa in AAA). So far this season between AA and AAA, he has a 1.11 ERA, 10 saves, 33 Ks in 24.1 ip, 13 bb and .188 baa). For those that know the farm system well, why hasn't anyone been talking about this guy in the past. I tried to look up the old "Getting to know your..." threads and couldn't find his name. What kind of stuff does this guy have? How many pitches does he throw? Looking for info. Thanks in advance.

Should Vitters be moved up to AA?

Based on what I'm looking at, I think Vitters has deserved to see better competition.

Vitters is currently hitting .356, 13 HR, and 34 RBIs. Given the 3B problem in the majors, don't you think it would be good for Vitters to see some better pitching in AA. Maybe he would be ready to come up next year, or at least get a sniff of MLB experience at the end of the season. I know we should not rush him through the minors, but it seemed like the only reason he was in Peoria was because the Chief complained to get him there. Well, he set a team record for most HRs in May. I think it is time to stop doing things that makes your A ball team better, and start shaping this kid up for the future.
