Flyers fans learn of the Pronger trade

23

This is the trade thread from the Flyers official site. Watch as Flyers fans react to the rumors, rejoice when the deal is confirmed, and then eventually find out what they gave up. This is top flight entertainment.

Leafs draft Nazem Kadri

70

After failing to trade up, Brian Burke and the Leafs have selected Nazem Kadri with the #7 overall pick. He was only ranked 15 in NA by Central Scouting, but most other lists had him in the top...

TSN's in-depth coverage of the 1990 draft (all five minutes of it). This is worth watching as we head into overdrive on draft hype. Remember, nobody knows anything. P.S. It's OK to rock out to the guitar solo at the end.

Ron Hextall rips Dany Heatley

Click on the "State of the Franchise: Hextall on Heatley" link. He might be even better at this than Burke was. (Although he doesn't 100% rule anything out...)

Do we need a blacklist for sports blogs that make up fake rumors?

3

Dallas Mavericks owner wants ESPN to start black-listing blogs that are based entirely on made-up rumors. "Bloggers, sports websites and even the print media have gotten so desperate they seem to have come to the conclusion that fabricated stories, passed off as rumors, are a better way to drive traffic and create awareness of a website or blog than actual reporting." Wow. Thank god this kind of thing doesn't happen in hockey!

Brian Burke is fairly non-committal about this whole Dany Heatley thing

60

"When you have players come ask you for a trade, I tell the players 'don't finish that sentence,' because once you ask, I'm going to move you. If a player wants out, you're darn right I'm going to move you. "I'm not kissing anyone's ass to play in my town, so to hell with you, don't finish the sentence." I love Brian Burke.

Dany Heatley wants out of Ottawa

54

TSN has confirmed that the 28-year old who signed a six-year, $45 million contract extension with the team in October of 2007 - that includes a no-movement clause - informed the team a week ago of his desire to play hockey elsewhere.

How important is the first goal in hockey?

7

If you're a math geek and you've ever wondered what a Poisson distribution would say about the importance of first goals in hockey, your wait is over.

Habs blog trashes Leaf fans, DGB, PPP

38

It's systematic from fans of the Maple Leafs. Whereas Canadiens fans were too unmoved to bother expressing opinions on the Leafs latest playoff-eschewer-to-be last season, there's hardly a Leafs blog worth its weight that passes up Martin bashing. I think it's essentially because Leafs fans, young ones especially especially have built their identities around two fundamental truths: 1) That beating Ottawa in 4 consecutive playoff series was the best thing about their decade 2) That 1993 was their year, cheated only of their latest Cup by foul refereeing ... I suspect that if a psychoanalyst were to probe into Toronto's complex about Jacques Martin, they might find a more profound complex about the falterings of Pat Quinn with sometimes superior and often more playoff-ready contending teams. (I suspect they'd have a lot to say about me writing this article about Toronto's complex too...).

Leafs prospect Mikhail Stefanovich goes #2 overall in KHL draft

Sure sounds like they know something we don't, doesn't it?

(This one's for you, PPP.) Todd Gill appears to beat Eddie Belfour on a long point shot to win the game 1-0 in overtime. But watch Wendel Clark reach out and tap Belfour's goal stick just as the puck arrives. The clip is followed by the Hawks reaction from that night's Global Sportsline. This was from game two of the Chicago/Toronto first round series in 1994. It gave the Leafs a 2-0 lead in the series, which they'd go on to win in six games.

I've finally figured out how to upload my old VHS tapes to youtube. I'll be posting five or six clips from the KIngs series at DGB tomorrow, but here's a preview. As far as I know, this is the only youtube clip of the most famous goal of Wendel Clark's career.

ESPN's The Sports Guy wants to hug Brian Burke

9

"... as it turns out, I really like hockey again. A boom of superskilled players helped, but not as much as the NHL's reembracing its chippy DNA. Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke admitted as much to me when we shared a panel at MIT's Sloan Sports Analytics Conference recently. All he wants from any game, he said, is for his fans to see a few goals, a donnybrook or two and, hopefully, a win. I wanted to hug him."

Tanking Islanders playing salary cap games?

Interesting examination of some of the loopholes the Islanders are using to technically meet the NHL's salary floor, while still icing a no-name team. WARNING: Link goes to a Habs blog.
