Three Years Later and Still in Our Aden-Hearts (RIP #34)
Last April 11, I had the chance to swing through Williamsport, Maryland to pay a visit to Nick Adenhart's resting place.
Only an hour from Washington, D.C., the Greenlawn Cemetery is a green and welcoming place.
Ever since Nick was taken from us, I have felt compelled to visit him.

Plunkett @ OCR: "Pitchers Lament Mathis' Departure"
In what I can only describe as a controversial headline hellbent on destroying the "destructobeam," fishwrap expert Bill Plunkett discusses the Mathis-conundrum.
Notice the headline in the hard copy on Sunday linked here at my photobucket site: "Pitchers Lament Mathis' Departure" differs from the one that appeared in the on-line version: "Iannetta catching on at key position for Angels"
The LA Angels lose a nailbiter to Los Angeles. Los Angeles skipper, Mike Scioscia high-fives minor leaguer Randal Grichuk after Grichuk knocked in the game-winning RBI.
Comedy brought to you by Fox Sports West at the tail end of the Rangers-Angels game on Sunday March 25, 2012.
HEAVEN - 82 games bundled into a little red box of joy
MLB.com's GameDay Doesn't Work Too Well During Spring Training
Just in case you didn't know ... as with every SPRING TRAINING, GameDay can lag actual game times, radar pitch speeds are inoperable/inaccurate, and pitch counts are all over the place...registering all pitches are strikes.

Continuing my laughable Topps cards of 2011 ... next up is the great Kazmir, certainly due for a breakout season in 2011.
Loser's Redemption: ALDS Ticket Refund Info
Just got this e-mail:
ANGELS INSIDER SUBSCRIBERS POSTSEASON REFUND INFORMATION
Due to the Angels being eliminated from Postseason contention, all future Postseason presale events have been canceled.
If you purchased tickets for potential ALDS and/or ALCS games you will be automatically refunded for the ticket price and associated convenience fees.
Thank you for your continued support of Angels Baseball.
Lyle Spencer also writes for Topps. This was on the latest issue 2011 Topps Jeff Mathis card that my son received at Angel Stadium in one of the Angel team packs.
Shannon Stone Memorial Fund
The Texas Rangers have set up a memorial fund for their fan who died in a tragic fall at the Ballpark in Arlington. Hope we can help show our love to this fellow baseball fan in his family's time of need.

Fangraphs: What's Wrong with Vernon Wells?

Can We Have Mike Napoli Back? ... Please? ... Pretty Please?
Within this community, my last posting here (other than my daily nonsense/grammar-correcting comments) dealt with one Mike Napoli. My plea was "Napoli should be the Angels' 2011 Designated Hitter."
Looking back at the events that have transpired between August 30, 2010 and today, we are left scratching our heads.

Cameron: "Bourjos Can Hit"
Dave Cameron writes an article featured at Fangraphs about "Fleet Pete." He is questioning the popular belief that Bourjos is "all glove, no bat."
Angels SGA 2010-2011 Calendar
Adding to the Mathis-bashing is the 2010-11 Angels giveaway calendar's January photo. Note that the caption says "In 2009, the Angels set numerous offensive club records including batting AVG (.285), runs scored (883), hits (1604) and RBI (841)."
I find it quite odd that Jeff Mathis' picture is depicted for this caption.
Priceless
Scioscia Transformation Thread
Soth has gone from genius to insane seemingly overnight. Bulger and Stokes in a 2-run deficit game? REALLY???????
I'm now labeling those guys "BULGingERa" and "Stinks."
Napoli Should Be the Angels' 2011 Designated Hitter
I am glad that Mike Napoli was pulled back from waivers, as he is an amazing hitter. However, he is a defensive abomination. Strong words, but I mean it. No, I am not calling for permanent installation of Jeff Mathis into the catcher position.
Instead, I am looking forward to a 2011 with Wilson/Conger as our catching platoon. Mike Napoli will be the DH for the Halos.

Poll: Brandon Phillips' Calls Cardinals Female Dogs
I just wanted to get a feel for how people here at HH feel about the Brandon Phillips fiasco. In case you did not know, he made some comments the day before regarding the toughness of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Upon stepping up to bat in the Cincinnati Reds' next game against the Cards, Yadier Molina had some words for Phillips.
Anyway, how do you feel about this situation? Was Phillips smart to make that statement? Or should he have just kept this to himself? Or do you think that Brandon is confusing a bird with a dog by calling them a bunch of bitches?
Video Blooper: Keep your eye on the ball and help a fellow fan out
Look at the highlight for Alex Rios' 2-run jack. Especially during 0:41 to 0:45 seconds.
That's why it's important for you to size up the other fans around you when you reach your seats. Questions like "if a home run reaches here, is this guy in front of me capable of catching it? If he doesn't, could the ball ricochet and hit me square in the noggin??" should come to mind.
Yahoo: Scioscia's "Halo Effect" Helps Angels
Cool article from Tim Brown discussing how Scioscia, a longtime Dodger, is now helping the cross-town Angels.
Garret says "I never ran over there agressively"
Warning: This quote is entirely taken out of context ...
"Ever since they raised the padding on that wall out there, there’s always been problems over there," Anderson said. "That concrete is exposed, and it’s a coin flip. … The padding always used to go all the way to the dirt, so the ball never kicked that far. I remember errors in two straight games after they raised the padding, so I never ran over there aggressively any more since then."
Vlad Hurt During Batting Practice
Get well soon, Big Daddy.
Seems he was hit during BP session by a batted ball. He is in the hospital.
Deja Vu: Indians "BUSH" whacked again... lose via the walk-off bunt
The Rays beat the Indians in walk-off fashion via a bunt! If it's such a bush league play, why not learn how to defend it? Shame on the Indians defense. Didn't help their cause, though, that the umps didn't give them a borderline call earlier in the inning.
Potential Nightmare: Pierzynski in the AL West
The Sporting News on a bit from the Chicago Tribune are reporting that the Texas Rangers are interested in AJ Pierzynski. What a nightmare it would be to have to see that guy more than one or two series per year in Anaheim.
Here's to hoping a deal will not go through.
Brave Boo Birds Bring Banal Booing Upon Glaus
Look at these spoiled fans booing Troy Glaus, who at least has two homers. Maybe we are too laid back here in SoCal? OK, time to prove to Lackey that we are just as nuts as Boston fans ... let's BOO BRANDON.
(not a good idea, imho, just a jab at the Lackey jab that I think is overhyped)
A comparison of dueling DH's: Godzilla vs The Impaler
(small sample size warning!)
I realize that it is quite early to make comparisons. However, I saw a few posts here mentioning Vladimir Guerrero's hot start after only four games with the Angels division rival Texas Rangers.
One fellow commented, "Hey, look who is leading the league in batting."
At that very early juncture, Guerrero was hitting a blistering batting average of approximately 464. Since that time I was alerted to Guerrero leading the league in batting, I have been keeping my eye on how he is doing with respect to Hideki Matsui's performance.
One interesting trend (it is still early, I know) is that Guerrero only has 3 extra base hits out of his 18 hits. By comparison, Hideki Matsui has 9 extra base hits out of his 17 hits.
Vladimir Guerrero 18 hits, 2 2B, 1 HR 16% of his hits are for extra bases.
Hideki Matsui 17 hits, 6 2B, 3 HR 53% of his hits going for extras.
Total lines:
Vladimir Guerrero: AVG .327 18H 5R 1HR 6RBI 3BB 1HBP 4SO 1GIDP
Hideki Matsui: AVG .293 17H 5R 3HR 10RBI 8BB 0HBP 12SO 0GIDP
OPS+:
Vladimir Guerrero: 114
Hideki Matsui: 154
From the total lines, Guerrero has a higher average. Matsui, on the other hand, is driving in runs via extra base hits as well as getting on base. Matsui's strikeouts are considerably higher than Guerrero's though, which is not a good sign. However, if Matsui ends up with triple the home runs of Guerrero (highly unlikely), we will overlook the number of strikeouts.
Regardless, it is still too early to make a comparison, but this is a small snapshot of where we stand now. I am sure more comparisons will be made as we go along and, more importantly, at the end of the season.

Question for Cookie's Boy: Is the Big A a small human child?
Why on Earth does Victor Rojas keep calling the Big A a "baby?"
"Light that baby up again," he exclaims in the wake of a Halos victory. (See 1:43 to 1:49 of the linked video clip)
His "signature call" is grating on me, but hell, I will be happy to hear it 97 more times this year.
