Who pays whom at Super Bowl Halftime

+

The NFL doesn't pay musical acts to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show, and it's not hard to see why: with a worldwide audience numbering in the nine figures, halftime acts enjoy an almost immediate bump in sales and touring revenue. Now, at last, the NFL is apparently going in the complete opposite direction, asking musical acts to pay for the privilege of playing the halftime show.

PS to expand to 10 players

+

NFL practice squads have been expanded to 10 players from a previous maximum of eight players, effectively immediately for this season. Under an agreement reached between the NFL and the NFL Players Association, the new limits will remain in effect for the next two seasons. Should the agreement not be extended, the eight-player limit will go back into effect starting in the 2016 season.

Football Outsiders wants interns

+

Football Outsiders is seeking two interns (one for AFC teams, one for NFC teams) to help collect player injury data for the 2014 season. These positions are unpaid, but we are happy to fill out any forms you may require us to go over for college credit, and you'll get Football Outsiders Almanac 2015 and next year's KUBIAK projections for free.

Cleveland signs former Cowboy Caleb McSurdy

+

The Cleveland Browns have signed linebacker Caleb McSurdy. He's a 2012 Dallas Cowboys seventh-round draft pick.

Money leaders by position

2

I have talked about the DAT effect where getting an above average player is much cheaper than the stars and allows you to spend money in higher quality depth across the team. This list shows how the difference in the best paid players can be significant.

Monday Morning MD - not just the numbers but the distribution of injuries

+

A team certainly wants to avoid the loss of an irreplaceable superstar. However, multiple injuries to a position group can be just as devastating. The Colts lost four projected contributors to the offensive line over the first two weeks of camp. Donald Thomas is out for the year with a quadriceps tear, Ulrick John has a fractured ankle and Xavier Nixon is scheduled for knee surgery. Thankfully, starting center Khaled Holmes only has an ankle sprain.

DC activates Hatcher from PUP

+

The Washington Redskins activated defensive end Jason Hatcher from the physically unable to perform list. Hatcher has passed his physical.

New CBA means that average age of rosters decrease

1

The drop in Approximate Value (AV)-weighted ages of NFL rosters in the last three years is more than 50% larger than in any other three-year period in NFL history.

FO adjusts INT rate to count for tipped passes and D drops

2

Romo throws a low percentage of INT if you adjust for passes tipped by the receivers and for INT dropped by the defender.Interceptions are notoriously hard to forecast from year to year, because there's so much random chance and statistical noise involved. Historically, we've found that adjusted interceptions have a higher year-to-year correlation than standard interception totals and are a better predictor of future interceptions. For the entire period from 2007 through 2013, the correlation coefficient for adjusted interception rate (0.32) is twice as high as the correlation for actual interception rate (0.16). In set of years except one (2011-2012), adjusted interception rate was a better predictor of interceptions the next year than actual interception rate.

Predicting the 2015 HOF

2

No matter which players are voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, several deserving candidates are always kept waiting each year. Logic and the numbers game guarantee it. Their wait can often be extended by the eligibility of a similar player. Sometimes the wait just makes no rational sense to many fans and analysts.

Jerry says Brent has a roster spot if reinstated

1

After 13 months in retirement, former Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent wants to return to football. Even better for Brent? Jerry Jones wants him back. The Cowboys owner said on Monday that if Brent gets reinstated, the Cowboys will find a place for him on the roster.

Martellus suspended indefinitely

9

Bears TE Martellus Bennett picked a fight with first-round draft pick Kyle Fuller on Monday, slamming him to the ground after Fuller tried to strip the ball from him. The Bears have responded harshly, announcing Tuesday that they've suspended Bennett indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team and have fined him an undisclosed amount

Regional/SuperRegional Combine participants in the NFL

+

Of the 66 NFL Regional/Super Regional Combine alums from the 2014 class, many won't make the final cut when teams skim the roster down to 53 names. But players like Davon Coleman and Lawrence Virgil have a much better chance to earn their way onto the roster, thanks to the NFL Regional and Super Regional process. Dallas has 6 players.

Injuries to JAG's down to 1 healthy WR for week one

6

No position group on any team in training camp has taken a bigger hit than the Jaguars' receiving corps. Allen Robinson, who will be sidelined for the next two weeks due to a hamstring injury. The Jaguars also have Cecil Shorts and Tandon Doss hurt . Justin Blackmon's indefinite suspension will likely remain indefinite due to a recent marijuana arrest and Ace Sanders is suspended for the first two games.

Brent to seek reinstatement

+

Former Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent is set to meet with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell soon as he tries to get back in the league, his agent, Peter Schafter, told ESPN.

Playmaker to be Pro Bowl Captain

+

The NFL started a new tradition before the 2014 Pro Bowl when it appointed Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders to serve as alumni captains who would pick the two teams to compete. In 2015, it'll be the turn of Hall of Fame receivers Cris Carter and Michael Irvin to serve as captains, the NFL announced on Wednesday.

Seahawks try out Tanner

+

The Seahawks worked out running backs Phillip Tanner, Orwin Smith and William Powell, according to a source. None were immediately signed to a contract, though.

List of NFL Fines

+

Ben Volin of the Boston Globe tweeted out the NFL's fine chart on Friday and lets just say, illegal chin straps are not going to be tolerated -- wearing the wrong chin strap will cost you $8,268. You can see the complete list of fines below.

Teams with most under-25 talent

It's great to have young players, but having lot of youth is usually the result of a lack of developed veterans. We wanted to create a ranking that balanced opportunity with performance and potential

10 stats to bide you over until TC

+

With just days until actual hitting (hooray) and holding out (sigh) starts, the time for tap-dancing and offseason rankings is nearly over. So let's get primed for camp with a rundown of 10 statistics and trends you absolutely have to know to be one of the cool kids this NFL season. From the rise of the hurry-up offense to increased field goal accuracy, these are the numbers that are shaping the game, which makes them more interesting than learning who showed up for camp out of shape.

Mara says that Coughlin could lose job

+

What if Coughlin doesn't make the playoffs? "I don't want to get into speculation about that," Mara said. "Then that ends up being an ultimatum that 'Make the playoffs or else.' Listen, we expect to make the playoffs, but I'm not going to sit here and tell you that if we don't, I'm going to make sweeping changes, because I don't know what the circumstances are going to be. You could be 11-5 and not make the playoffs -- do you make changes then? You can make the playoffs at 8-8 like we did one year and then go out in the first round -- do you feel better about yourself under those circumstances? So it's very difficult to answer that question, put a specific number on it."

Football character is NOT the same as personal character

+

RKG expanded to football in general. Football character is related to personal character, but they are not the same. There are many factors that go into the makeup of a player’s football character. These factors include his love and passion for the game. Is the game important to the player and will he do everything that is possible to make himself a better player?

Catch Radius: DEZ and NFC

1

Our previous looks at catch radius focused on mostly AFC teams (Miami, Pittsburgh, Denver and Cincinnati). Our final studies for 2013 feature 12 of the best receivers in the NFC, including every leading receiver in the NFC East.

A commentary on blogging/grammar set to music

A Weird Al Yankovic parody of Robin Thicke's "Blurred LInes". This should be seen by all who misspell, misuse words, and all kinds of blogging nightmares.

LBJ parody

1

Sports Channel 8 has some helpful advice for LeBron James on how to deal with the prospect of leaving Miami where he's made four straight Finals and won two championships, all to the tune of Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover."

Four players eligible for supplemental draft

3

This year's class offers just four names and lacks the obvious talent that led the Cleveland Browns to invest a second round selection in former Baylor wideout Josh Gordon two years ago. None of the players are expected to fetch a high pick but a few offer enough intrigue that a late round selection could occur.

unpaid intern job as fact checker

+

Andy Benoit, former FO writer and now Sports Illustrated writer, is producing his team-by-team previews for TheMMQB.com. Before he sends them to his editors, he’d like to have a third party individual fact-check them. The position requires an extensive knowledge of the NFL plus the drive to double-check even the seemingly most tedious of facts.

Substance abuse suspensions taking toll aready

5

Every year, the NFL tries to crack down on players using performance-enhancing drugs and illegal substances of any kind, including drugs such as marijuana. This offseason is no different, and quite a few players have already been nabbed by the league. In 2014, the NFL has suspended 10 players for violations so far, with some of the biggest names in the game on the list.

Graham is a TE

+

New Orleans Saints star Jimmy Graham is officially a tight end as far as arbitrator Stephen Burbank is concerned. Burbank ruled in favor of the Saints following a grievance hearing, meaning that Graham is set for a $7 million franchise tag designated for tight ends rather than a $12.3 million wide receiver tag. The tight end franchise tag was assigned by the NFL Management Council.

Catch Radius of a Receiver

1

While we have done well to contextualize the value of a receiver's stats with advanced metrics, it was only a matter of time before interest grew for numbers showing how they are producing their stats. Thanks to streaming services (and those lovely torrents), we have conducted analysis beyond the play-by-play level with game charting. One area I have used the offseason to take a limited view of the last few years is catch radius, which can also be used as a measure of the quarterback's accuracy in hitting his target.
