Can we stop saying Griffen was overpaid?

I hear it on the radio from all the 'experts' - Griffen has to prove it, he hasn't played much, is he really worth the money? First off, he's played over 1300 defensive snaps over the past two...

The case for Derrick Williams in Cleveland

I'm really intrigued by the opportunity, however real it may be, to add Andy Varejao to the Wolves. I think a three headed center/big rotation of Love, Pek, and Andy V would be spectacular,...

Remember that guy who 'diagnosed' Oden and Roy's knee problems?

1

"Well unfortunately I predict another injury to Brandon’s left knee immediately following this surgery. Brandon’s healthy right knee has now forced all the stress back to his chronically injured left knee and upon return to the court if not before, Brandon will begin to experience more pain and discomfort in his left knee. If he shifts that stress immediately back to his right knee, Brandon could suffer cartilage damage, an MCL (medial collateral ligament) tear, or an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament ) tear or Patella tendon issues on the right knee. Because of Brandon’s history I would put my money on the right knee suffering a more acute injury but he may begin to experience more pain on his left knee before he even gets a chance to get back on he court."

What a difference

Add up the WS - the three new guys, after four games, have added nearly a full win to our squad compared to the old guys. And who says we don't have a good GM? Rick Adelman knows how to choose free agents.

I was thinking about Rubio and what he brings to the table and found this highlight clip. I highly recommend watching it and thinking about this team. We've been talking a lot about missing him and Love and having to rely on Shved, Roy, and AK. But here's what struck me (besides how much force he passes the ball with sometimes): this dude is going to make so many guys on this roster look awesome. Dante Cunningham is going to absolutely love playing with Rubio. AK47 will feast. Pek will feast. Budinger will have 4 easy three looks a game. Love will continue to feast. A lot has been and will be said about whether Roy and Rubio can co-exist, but once he's back I think all will agree - Ricky is the straw that stirs this team's drink. His star may not shine as bright as Roy's or Love's or Pek's this year, but whatever he does transcends the boxscore and makes great things happen.

Shooters: Old vs. New

Lakers pursuing Beasley?

30

Surprised this hasn't gotten more play here: "It's not clear what the Lakers would give Minnesota for Beasley (if indeed the talks get that far), but the Lakers could absorb Beasley into their $8.9 million trade exception while giving up a draft pick or cash. I'm told the teams have not spoken about Pau Gasol since the preseason. Minnesota is looking to move Beasley, who they feel has matured very little (if at all) since he's been there, according to sources. The Lakers believe they can handle a player like Beasley because of their winning culture and the leadership of Bryant. "

What a difference a year makes

3

So far this year, Rubio has topped 17 points in over 20% of his games, whereas Jonny Flynn didn't top 17 all of last year, and for his career in 'Sota topped 17 just under 20% of the time. More to the point (for their MN careers): Flynn - 1 double digit assist night Rubio - 13 double digit assist nights Flynn - 3 nights with 4 of more steals Rubio - 8 nights with 4 or more steals Flynn - minus 1.2 WS in 3322 minutes Rubio - plus 2.5 WS in 1076 minutes

On Pek, Love, and Rubio...a year ago

17

I personally believe that the Timberwolves would be smart to play him at center alongside Love. Pekovic doesn’t have much of an outside shot beyond the top of the key, and he is much more comfortable in the post whereas Love can work the outside. Also, if you put a strong pass first point guard, he will be that PG’s dream. If Ricky Rubio ever ends up in a Timberwolves’ jersey, this will be a fun combo to watch.

Pekovic, compared to TWolves history

3

So, first off, BBall-Ref is weird because they list Pek as a F and not a C, so this is the best I can do: Behold! By WS/48, Pek is playing as the 3rd best F/C the Wolves have ever had (and the best not named Kevin). Only Dean Garret, in one wonderful Stephon Marbury filled season, comes close to Pek in WS/48 from the C position. If you look at PER it's a similar story - KG, Love, and Big Al rank ahead of Pek. Dude's getting his opportunity and making us forget Marcin What's his name?

2009 Hoopus Draft Board: Results

20

First, see here for the Ricky Rubio draft board. After 26 games Ricky is looking pretty solid amongst his peers.

Pekovic's unique rebounding skills

10

In the history of the entire NBA, Pekovic's rebounding skills are truly unique. No one else has been so much better at offensive rebounding and so much weaker at defensive rebounding than him - and been good enough at other stuff to actually play 15 mpg consistently.

Why Nash over Rubio for All-Star reserve?

9

From four letter: "As for Nash, things are never really easy anymore playing for what's left of the Suns. But on a starting-over team that bears little resemblance to the high-octane outfit he QB'd from 2004-05 through the 2009-10 season, Nash is somehow still regularly playing textbook ball through the pain at age 37 and averaging 15.2 points and a shade under 10 assists on a team where he and Marcin Gortat are the only consistent scoring options." Are you kidding me? Phoenix is 5 games under .500, and is only 3-10 against teams over .500 (compared to our 7-9 record against same). This is why I don't read national writers very often - they pick a guy and stick with him well past the point of reason. The All-Star game deserves young players who have earned it on the court, not based on reputation. Wins matter unless a guy is ridiculously productive. For final comparison, see here. I'm not saying that Rubio should necessarily be in, but I don't think Steve Nash is the best choice either. [And I like Nash].
