Hello GLBers. Checking in poolside from beautiful Encinitas, California. I scored some tickets to the game Thursday night against the Bochys and was wondering if any of my favorite GLBers are planning on going to the game as well? I'll be sitting with my crew (we travel heavy, btw - so don't try and start static) in Section L, Rows 11 & 12. Of course I'll be wearing my Retired Numbers Gaslamp Ball T-shirt and some cut-off jean shorts with the ass-cheeks cut-out.

Dex has promised me a hug that he described like this:

"if i see you, i'm gonna hug you
gently at first
and then maybe rough"

Poetry, right? He also mentioned "humping" or something...and I blocked it out.

Maybe we could pick an inning and a place to meet-up for some rough hugging?

(Pictures and autographs are fine...but it will cost you a Stone IPA.)

I hate to come off as some 80-year old pining for the "good ole days"...but the more I watch this team lose, watch players I care about shipped out of town, watch valuable members of the roster head to the DL one-by-one...I can't help but long for the excitement, fun and anticipation that came with each game in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Games with real meaning. Games where I made a point to be ready at first pitch. Games where I would log onto the GLB a few minutes early to see if the Open Thread was up and ready to go.

The winning, the fight for the NL West, the possibilities in the playoffs...all those things were that much more intense because of the GLB.

I miss the truly great Open Thread's of the past. I know that having a garbage team makes it difficult...but I want to try and squeeze one great one out of '08.

Here is my idea: This coming Tuesday (Aug. 26th) is a home game against the D-Backs. Let's all try and make a point of showing up...regulars, former regulars, the newbies...EVERYBODY. Pre-2.0, the goal was to collapse the sucker...that's what I'm looking for. Hell, I even want rainbows, unicorns, dancing spideys, Dolphin Porn, J Dub calling a no-hitter...all of it.

NOT ONLY ARE THEY BAD....BUT THEY'RE INCREDIBLY BORING

CC Sabathia is now 7-0 in a Brewers uniform after easily handling the Padres in a 7-1 rout.

Chris Young is likely headed back to the DL.

The Padres claimed Brian Falkenborg off waivers from the Dodgers. Remember when he pitched for the Friar back in 2005? Yeah....me either.

Strasburg is awesome. I hope the Nationals appreciate him when they get him.

Allan Dykstra still hasn't signed. Deadline is tomorrow at 9pm.

I wonder what TheThirdGonzalez has been up to recently?

$40 million dollar payroll for 2009? This is how rumors get started (they're started by the jealous people). Say what you will about the Steinbrenners, Cubans and Jerry Jones of the sports world....but at least their fans know that their owner actually gives shit. Wouldn't it be smart for John Mooores to sit down with Tom Krasovic or Corey Brock and put an end to this kind of crap right now? Maybe reassure us all a little? Let us know his frustration? Unless it's true...

The franchise right now is a complete and total clusterf**k...and it there is a very real possibilty it's going to get worse - much worse. The failed attempt to trade Giles has the players concerned about the Moores divorce, questioning the direction of the team and worried about a massive payroll cut.

The Padres are "a little concerned" about Bard's right elbow.

The Savior is hot and Cla Meredith is not.

Some sad news to report, actor-comedian Bernie Mac died of complications from pneumonia this morning in Chicago.

Should the Padres Pay Khalil for the Rest of the '08 Season?

So, in WG's SLPiH this morning, Tom Krasovic from the San Diego Union Tribune has an item (kinda buried) regarding Khalil Greene.

Five days after shortstop Khalil Greene's self-inflicted hand fracture, Padres CEO Sandy Alderson was asked if the club will try to avoid paying Greene's $5.5 million salary for the 6-8 weeks he's to be on the disabled list.

"Anything we decide or conclude with respect to Khalil and his contracted will be a private matter that we wouldn't comment on," Alderson said. "That will be true regardless of what transpires."

A player's agent said the players union would respond with a grievance against the Padres if the club attempts to deny Greene any salary.

I don't condone what Khalil did in any way, but I think it's idiotic to even put the idea out there that it's a possibility the team might try and avoid paying his salary because his injury was self-inflicted.

If they have no intention of trying to hold his pay...then Sandy should have just simply answered "No."

IT AIN'T OVER YET, BOYS & GIRLS

Padres waste a great starting effort from Josh Banks, Trevor gives up a run in a non-save situation and Kouz grounds into a game ending double play with the bases full of Padres in extra innings.

Turns out Khalil's fateful encounter with the storage chest the other day wasn't the first time he's had a meltdown this season. (Also, the Padres inquired about Jason Bay before he was dealt to Boston...whatever.)

Khalil is worried he won't be back in a Padre uniform in 2009 2008.

Another look at Khalil's frustration level. "I think it lies more within the mind than anything else."

Greg Maddux had the Padres only stolen base in the entire month of July. Jesus H. bald-headed Lopez in a chariot-driven sidecar.

All Padre fans are suffering.
