Raja Bell will have his wrist operation today, and could be out for the season after it but, in the most optimistic scenario, he could be back in one month and thus traded before the February 18th deadline.

Golden State is eager to trade him because they would rather get something in return for Bell than nothing by letting him expire or buying him out.

So, knowing that Bell has an expiring contract of 5 million dollars, I think he would be a perfect fit in Boston and the final piece of the puzzle : an excellent wing defender who hits his threes with consistency and fits in the "we, not me" mold. He could allow us to rest Ray and Paul even more in the regular season and he could be a huge asset in the playoffs because he can defend on the other's team wing star (LeBron for instance).

People may argue that he isn't as good as before and that we won't have enough minutes for him and Marquis. Bell's production may have dropped a little bit these past few years, but he is still really good for his role. As for the minutes with Marquis... well, since Bell's contract expires this summer and that he would be a 4 months rental, I say just do it if you can because he could be huge for us (and wouldn't bring any negative assets with him).

So, now, assuming he can be traded in February, the problem is that we don't have anything attractive to offer. Scal + T.A would make the trade work salary wise but I don't think GS would agree with that. Maybe some salary cap expert can give us some details here : would the expirings of T.A and Scal save more money to GS than Bell's contract?

Anyway, I just looked at the other teams' players' salaries and I think New Orleans and Sacramento are two teams that could make this deal work. I know it's very unlikely to happen since it would have to involve 4 teams but who knows?

So, here is the scenario :

Boston trades Tony Allen, Brian Scalabrine. Boston receives Raja Bell.

New Orleans trades Peja Stojakovic, Julian Wright. New Orleans receives Tony Allen, Brian Scalabrine, Kenny Thomas.

Golden State trades Raja Bell, Speedy Claxton. Golden State receives Peja Stojakovic, Sergio Rodriguez.

Sacramento trades Kenny Thomas, Sergio Rodriguez. Sacramento receives Speedy Claxton, Julian Wright.

Now, let me explain the interest for each team, because I think this trade makes sense for all of them. Remember, this trade is supposed to happen in February (or January).

Boston gets rid of two players useless in their rotation to acquire a key player to their championship run. Raja Bell's contract expires this summer so you don't have to worry about the team's future payroll when acquiring him.

New Orleans is struggling right now and I guess we can all assume it will be even worse by February. They are not going to make the playoffs with their current roster and they have no ways of improving this summer because of their big contracts. So they decide to dump Peja Stojakovic to receive 3 expiring contracts that will free them 15 000 000 $ this summer. Great financial move. They have to get rid of a young and promising wing in that process (Julian Wright) but they don't mind because the still have Marcus Thornton (good young prospect) and James Posey on the wings.

Golden State wants some value in return for trading Bell : they acquire Peja Stojakovic, an excellent shooter who would fit perfectly in their system. Plus, his contract expires in two years so it will be a huge cap relief to see 14 millions dollars get off their books in 2011. Plus, they get Stojakovic and Rodriguez by trading two useless players in their rotation since Speedy Claxton never plays and they already have Monta Ellis and Azubuike as guards.

So, from now until the financial relief of 2011 with Peja's contract off the books, they have a starting 5 of : Curry/Ellis/Stojakovic/Radmanovic/Biedrins and a bench of Rodriguez/Azubuike/Maggette/Randolphf/Turiaf. Not excellent but still pretty good for their run & gun ways.

Finally, Sacramento. They get rid of Kenny Thomas' expiring to acquire Speedy Claxton's expiring. No big interest here. Still, in the process they also get Julian Wright, a promising wing that they could use since they are tight at this spot, and his contract is not really costly (4M$ for 2 years).
They don't get much value in return but they don't dump some talent either by doing it so... I guess you can see them as a "facilitator" in the trade but they don't get screwed nor are the big winners in this scenario, so why not?

So, that's my trade idea. Maybe a little complex but I think the 4 teams would do it, Sacramento being the biggest question mark. What do you think?

Trade idea with Orlando

Hey guys! First of all I want to introduce myself. I'm a basketball fan from France, and I've discovered the NBA three years ago, thanks to a friend who got me interested in this sport but also in the Suns, which made me enjoy the game with they run & gun style of play. I'm a Celtics fan first and foremost but I still support the Suns and I've been disgusted to see them fall apart this season. I've been following BSOTS since a few months and I just had an interesting trade idea in order to improve the team while allowing it to make some great moves in the anticipated 2010 free agency summer, so I thought I would finally register on the blog and share my idea with you.

Your comments and ideas are welcome, and I hope you will excuse my poor english.

I'm convinced that the current roster of the Suns must not be changed. We've seen how amazingly efficient it has been offensively. Considering that the team decides to focus more on defense and improve a bit in this area next year, I feel that this team has a last chance of competing for a title before totally rebuilding after next season. So, keep Nash, Hill, Barnes and Gentry.

Here is the trade : the Suns deal Jason Richardson to the Magic and get Rafer Alston, Courtney Lee and Tony Battie in return.

By doing so, the Suns improve their situation financially. Sure, they would still have to pay the luxury tax this year but they would get ride of J-Rich's big contract while obtaining 3 expiring contracts (they all expire after the 2009-2010 season) of the same value.

Jason Richardson's contract (expires in 2011):
$13,333,333 (2010)
$14,444,444 (2011)

3 Magic's players' contracts (they all expire in 2010)

Alston : $5,250,000
Lee : $1,264,440
Battie : $6,292,000
Total : $12,806,440

This way, the Suns get great financial flexibility to sign big stars in the summer of 2010, allowing them to rebuild when Nash, Shaq, the three former Orlando players and Stoudemire (assuming he uses his option to become a free agent) contracts expire.

Now, the financial asset of the trade put apart, I think that this trade improves the Suns roster. Jason Richardson has been disappointing since his arrival in Phoenix, and he doesn't defend very well. I agree with Phoenix Stan, who said that he needed to take many shots to be effective on offense. So I think we agree that J-Rich isn't really needed in Phoenix, especially when you have Barbosa on your roster.

By acquiring Alston, Lee and Battie, the Suns get three "complement" players :

- Courtney Lee can shoot the three, he defends well and he can drive to the basket with efficiency. He is young and has great potential , he would be a great "heir" to Raja Bell, and younger. He could start or be a backup, depending of Gentry's preference about Barbosa's role (I think he is better in his 6th man role).

- Rafer Alston would be the backup point guard who allows Nash to get some extended rest because Rafer can score by himself (with his drives and pump fakes), shoot well and pass the ball well. We all know that Alston is mentally weak, he can get cold for long stretches or turn "crazy" on some games but overall he would allow Nash to rest and he would a great backup for Steve.

- Tony Battie is the weakest player of the trio but he can rebound and he's got a decent midrange jumpshot. He could be the backup for Shaq or Stoudemire, but it would be more likely to use his expiring contract to get some quality backup. If it's not possible then Battie can play and do his job but he would not be a great improvement over Amundson for example.

Personnally I think that this trade would benefit the Suns because they would get a good bench and still have an opportunity to sign some interesting free agent with their MLE.

Here is what their roster would look like in my scenario :

Nash/Alston/Dragic
Barbosa/Lee
Hill/Barnes/Tucker/Dudley
Stoudemire/Amundson/Quality big man signed via the MLE?
Shaq/Battie/Lopez

Thus, Phoenix would have a pretty effective rotation to make a last run at the championship in 2009/2010 before getting in rebuilding mode after next season with great opportunities thanks to the large amount of money available.

The problem is that Orlando wouldn't probably be likely to agree to this trade but still we can imagine that the Magic would like the idea of getting a great scorer and another great offensive threat in their lineup, in exchange of two old guys who are not likely to be part of their rotation next year (Nelson will start again and Johnson will be his backup, and Battie wasn't much used by Van Gundy this year). Courtney Lee's departure would cost the Magic a lot since he is a young promising and yet already effective guard and a good defender, but it would be the prize to pay to get Richardson.

What do you guys think of this trade? Your comments and ideas are appreciated!
