Crisp to KC for Ramon Ramirez

Confirmation from MLB.com.

Good deal for the Sox here, in my opinion. Crisp is a good defensive outfielder with a weak bat, and Ramirez was one of the better relievers in baseball last year. Coco's the guy most people know, but the addition of Ramirez to an already great Boston bullpen will help them a lot more than a 4th-OF type who makes too much money.

And again, the Royals bring in a player that's not going to help them much now, or in the future. I guess the talk about valuing OBP in the organization was just hot air, as I don't think Crisp's career .331 mark is going to turn any tides offensively. Bad deal, in my opinion.

Any thoughts on the deal? Am I wrong?

Kershaw sent down

Kershaw seems pretty upset about the move, or at least the Dodgers not being straight with him about it: "Any way you spin it, I'm getting sent down," Kershaw said. "They can say they don't have enough room. But they sent me up when they didn't have enough room. All those guys were healthy then."

Is it just me, or does it seem like Joe Torre doesn't know his ass from his elbow when it comes to managing young players?

Chase Headley

Well, it sounds like Headley's going to get sent back down as soon as Kevin Kouzmanoff shows he's ready to play again. Even so, Chase can't be long for AA.

We've seen an impressive showing of power from Headley this year, something that last year was his biggest deficiency as a prospect. The way he's mashing this year, he has to be viewed as one of the better prospects in baseball, right?

My question is: Where does Chase Headley land on your prospect lists at this point? Is he top-50? Higher? I'd be interested in hearing some opinions on this one.

Carrillo in Spring Training

Anybody know how healthy Cesar Carrillo is coming into spring training? He's probably the most talented pitcher the club has in the minors right now, and with an injury to David Wells would likely improve the rotation.

What's the prognosis on Cesar lately? Will the elbow hold up? I'd love to see this kid in a Padres uniform in 2007.

Grady Sizemore: Breakout Year?

I know Grady's not a prospect anymore, but at 24 he's one of baseball's youngest players on the verge of superstardom.

Last year would probably be considered the "breakout year" for Sizemore, but looking at his second half numbers suggests that 2007 could push him up to the highest ranks of baseball.

Pre-AS 2006: .291/.363/.516
Post-AS 2006: .289/.388/.553

Pre-AS projected (650 ABs): 63:137 BB:K, 56 2B+3B, 27 HR
Post-AS projected (650 ABs): 97:173 BB:K, 74 2B+3B, 29 HR

If Grady's post-break numbers reflect his true abilities, we could be looking at a 100 walk/100 XBH season from him next year, something that's been done once since 1948 (Barry's roided-out 2001).

Will Grady's '07 put him on a HOF-Caliber pace? Tell us what you think below.

Francisco Liriano's value

Liriano is universally held as a top pitching prospect. This is because he has the tools and ability to become one of the best starters in baseball. He has, however, a pretty rocky injury history, and has the risk that comes from being a young pitcher.

Right now Liriano's value is just about as high as a (non-Felix/Prior)pitching prospect's can get. If you have Liriano, do you trade him while his value is high, or do you keep him in hopes of his becoming Jake Peavy/Johan Santana-lite?

I guess this is a question of pitching prospects vs. position prospects. If you can trade Liriano for a Daric Barton/Brandon Wood mid-tier blue chip prospect, do you do it? Or would you rather roll the dice and hope Liriano comes up a winner? Who's an example of the lowest prospect you might trade him for?

An item for discussion:

We all know the Howie Kendricks, Dustin Pedroias, and Josh Barfields of the world. I don't want to talk about them.

Instead, who are the minor league second basemen ready to vault themselves into top-prospect territory this season?

I'm looking for guys who might be able to crack a major league lineup in '07 with a breakout in '06. Guys maybe like Travis Denker, Marcus Sanders, Asdrubal Cabrera, or others--who are your favorites to make "the leap" this year, and why?
