I heard a rumor that we are getting natural turf at Kinnick. I can't confirm or deny this since the only coverage is over on Jon "Cheapskate" Miller's hawkeyenation.com forum. If it is true and Ferentz approved it, I am surprised since he was so relieved in 2005 to get grass replacement instead of turf.

I hated artificial turf and I hate the "new and improved" natural turf. Natural Turf is supposed to be safer and while I agree that it looks better, they both looked horrible at the metrodome.

It seems like teams are going back and forth between grass and turf. They'll have a bad year of weather and replace the grass with turf as a result. Remember the summer of 2005 and all the Big XI fields it destroyed that fall? Turf is a reactionary solution that never lasts long. Ohio State did this after their grass field looked like absolute shit before the Michigan game in 2006. They replaced the grass for that game specifically and then went to turf in the offseason. These same teams will then start missing grass because it looks better and is safer. So they'll switch back to it for a few years and the vicious cycle continues. It's clear neither solution is perfect.

But, I wouldn't be complaining if there wasn't a solution. Mile High Stadium in Denver has it and it is a hybrid of synthetically enhanced grass. They have a primary surface of grass mixed with artificial fibers of fake grass every quarter inch. The result? Natural grass that can hold up to the wear and tear of football and looks great. Kinnick deserves this.

Please let the rumors be wrong. Come on Gary, do the right thing.

Since OPS and HS are probably busy enjoying the football victory last night, I will start a basketball thread for the Oakland game tonight.

I will be dropping cable tomorrow since football season is over. But before I do, I can enjoy one last Big Ten Network Event. Oakland (mascot name here) vs Iowa Hawkeyes at Carver Hawkeye Arena on November 23rd, 2008 at 5pm Central Time.

Six minutes in and it is 12 to 11 Iowa.
