The Number Shuffle
Courtesy of Todd Zolecki
We know Jonathan Papelbon‘s alter ego "Cinco Ocho" is based on the No. 58 on the back of his jersey.
But when he came to Philadelphia he knew Antonio Bastardo had the number. No big deal. Papelbon and Bastardo have the same agents, so Bastardo had no problem handing his number to the Phillies’ new closer.
Bastardo's and another player changed numbers as a result of Pap's signing. Click on the link for the "inside info".

Phillies Reach Agreement With Lance Nix
The Phillies and Laynce Nix have agreed to terms on a two-year contract, according to Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com (Twitter links). The deal is pending a physical.
Nix, who turned 31 on October 30, hit .250/.299/.451 in 351 plate appearances for the Nationals last season. The journeyman is known for his ability to hit for big power against right-handed pitching (career .198 ISO versus righties), but he doesn't get on base much and his career .506 OPS against southpaws shows he's definitely a platoon player.
Phillies Trade for "Super Sub" Ty Wiggington

Sixers core convenes in L.A for pickup games
"In attendance along with Brand and Williams were Andre Iguodala, Jrue Holiday, Evan Turner, Jodie Meeks, Spencer Hawes and Craig Brackins. That list includes last year’s starting five, their sixth man and a rookie who will likely earn a starting spot whenever the upcoming season does get underway."

Bryce Harper hates kids...possibly.
So as some of you may, or may not be aware I live in the Harrisburg area, actually, right outside of Harrisburg on the West Shore. Doing so affords me the ability to attend Harrisburg Senators games. For those of you unfamiliar, the Senators are the Double A affiliate of the Phillies perennial punching bag the Washington Nationals.(I have a feeling that won't be true much longer). Anyway, living in this area for the last 3 years I have attended a grand total of 1 game. And that game was the one in which organizationally appointed savior Stephen Strasburg made his Double A debut. That is until last night, when I attended my second ever Harrisburg Senators game. Why you ask? Well aside from it being close, and cheap, it was because the war paint wearing, kiss blowing, self aggrandizing outfielder Bryce Harper was playing in his 4th game as a member of the Senators.
For those of you not familiar with Metro Bank Park, there is a bank of seats along the 1st base line that extends to the outfield wall, similar to just about every park I've ever seen. Harper, was playing in Right Field last night, where I understand he has played all of his games so far for the Senators. My seats, of course, were in right field. First row(thanks to a buddy of mine) so we were in prime heckling territory. Unfortunately, I am not much of a heckler to begin with, even less so at an event which is pretty heavily filled with children. Maybe it's just me, and I don't have any kids of my own(that I know of) but it just seems wrong to heckle a guy when you know kids could pick up on it and repeat it. Sadly however, my friend doesn't have the same conscience I do, or possibly any at all for that matter and he had no problem giving Harper the business. I'll further add that I think it's somewhat unfair to heckle a guy who is only 18 years old. But at any rate, my buddy, God love him spent the majority of the first few innings yelling things like "Nice war paint tough guy." " (For the record, he has toned that down big time, it's really not that much different than anyone else who wears eye black...except he uses a little more than he should) "Awesome mustache, are you auditioning for America's Next Porn Star" and other relatively stupid things. At one point I actually had to facepalm myself like Captain Picard because I was somewhat embarrassed at not just what my friend was saying, but that he was saying anything at all. Some people laughed, most didn't since most people who go to the game actually are Senators fans.
A note about the game itself...Harper went 0-4 with a K and 3 LOB's. He was fine in the outfield making what I considered routine plays. He does seem to have a pretty strong arm. The highlight for me was watching Chien-Ming Wang pitch for the Senators. I honestly forgot he was on the team as I truly don't follow the Senators at all. Which I guess is kind of sad, and if they were affiliated with anyone other than an NL East team I might actually pay attention. But at the end of the day, I have no desire to see the Senators succeed. Maybe that makes me a bad person. Anyway, back to the game. Wang pitched 5 scoreless, gave up 2 hits and had 2 K's. Senators won 5-0.
Now, to the interesting part...the part that is the genesis of this fan posts title. After the game was over, some of the players, actually, many of the players stuck around on the field to give some autographs, apparently this is not an uncommon thing from what I am told. I would name a bunch of guys that I saw signing autographs but I have a feeling most of them would be unknown to you...except for Wang and another guy who I didn't know was on the team...former Met great Oliver Perez. Both signing balls, shirts, scorecards whatever. Then there was Bryce Harper. He walked by the people lined up along the seats in Right Field, almost taunted everyone, he looked directly at the fans standing there but never came closed to sign anything, despite some of his team mates doing so. One kid, probably about 8 years old was wearing a Bryce Harper jersey, he even turned around to show Bryce that his name was on the back. Harper, just looked at him, the kid threw him a ball to sign hoping it would prompt him to come over. It didn't. Harper just rolled the ball back to the kid, I guess not wanting to throw it and risk hurting him, or maybe his arm was sore, or he was just bored. Either way, the kid was pretty bummed. The kid's mother was not to happy. I kind of just stood there in amazement at it all. Eventually Bryce made his way to the dugout and became invisible, much like his stat line for the night.
All in all I will say that if you are ever in the area and looking for something fun and cheap to do, either by yourself or with your family, go to a Senators game. It's a nice park, located on City Island, the team is very good and entertaining to watch and the food isn't bad. There are also some batting cages on the island and mini golf. Or you can rent canoes or kayaks to go up and down the Susquehanna river, as well as a ton of other activities that are offered on the island.

Fairly, or unfairly, Carter is upset with the Flyers
"He had an opportunity (in 2008) to go somewhere else on an offer sheet - we had it in our hands - and we turned it down because he wanted to remain a Flyer," Curran said. "Last summer, they came to us and said he and Mike Richards are the cornerstone of the franchise. They said, 'We may need some help (with the salary cap) so we sat and talked on a long-term deal."
Phillies among 9 MLB teams out of Debt Compliance.
"The Phillies have sold out Citizens Bank Park throughout the season. But a team's ability to fill seats does not correspond directly with its ability to turn a profit."
Any yet people have the stones to call the owners cheap.
Lucic not suspended for Game 7
After receiving a game misconduct and a five-minute major for boarding in Game 6, Milan Lucic will not be suspended for Game 7, Nick Kypreos of Rogers Sports net in Canada reports.

Clearwater Threshers Bullpen is the place to be.
"On Tuesday in the Florida State League, the Clearwater Threshers hoisted their record to 8-4 with a 7-5 win over the Daytona Cubs at Bright House Field. According to our source at the Class-A Advanced minor league game, however, the more interesting story was in the left field bullpen area."

Pronger and Carillo among leagues most hated...
"Daniel Carcillo comes in at No. 6 and Chris Pronger is tied at No. 4 with Todd Bertuzzi."
*************Posters Note*************
It doesn't really shock me to see Pronger on her, as great as he is he can be a pretty dirty player from time to time.
But Carcillo? The article mentions his embellishment antics which I completely agree with, it's total dogshit and I hate it when he does it, but dirty? Really? I don't see that at all. I think he is one of the most respectful fighters in the game and rarely if ever do I see him doing anything dirty.
However, what I think is most surprising...no mention of Briere who in my opinion is one of the dirtiest players in the game. His cavalier attitude with his stick is just unbelievable even more ridiculous when you consider how skilled he is offensively.
Thoughts anyone?

Elton Brand and other Clippers helped pay for Assistant Coaches Cancer Treatments After Team Declines To Do So.
"While working as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Clippers seven years ago, Hughes was diagnosed with prostate cancer."
"I contacted the Clippers about medical coverage and they said the surgery wouldn't be covered," Hughes said. "I said, ‘Are you kidding me?' And they said if they did it for one person, they'd have to do for everybody else."
"When Dunleavy learned the Clippers wouldn't cover the cost of Hughes' surgery, he mentioned it to his players."
"Several of them, including now Milwaukee Bucks forward Corey Maggette, Chris Kaman, Elton Brand and Marko Jaric, were taken aback by the news and decided to offer their assistance."

Phillies Claim Brian Schlitter
"Cliff Lee isn't the only pitcher the Phillies nabbed from the Yankees this winter. The Phillies announced that they claimed Brian Schlitter from New York off of waivers. Philadelphia designated Andrew Carpenter for assignment to create room for Schlitter, who was designated for assignment yesterday."
[Edit: frontally paginated. You may recall that Schlitter was the man dealt for everyone's favorite LOOGY, Scott Eyre, way back when in 2008. He's 25 now, and has climbed steadily through the minors after being drafted in 2007 out of baseball powerhouse College of Charleston, and he's got some middle relief possibilities in his future. --PF]
Flyers interested in Versteeg?
No idea how accurate this is...yahoo usually does a decent job. Knowing that the Flyers are looking for scoring depth certainly leads evidence that this could be true.
Matt Cooke suspended four games...
"Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke has received a four-game suspension for his hit from behind on Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Fedor Tyutin on Tuesday, the NHL announced Wednesday."
NHL Players don't want to play for the Flyers?
Not going to lie, this does surprise me a bit. I get some of the teams on the list. Detroit sure, NYR...it's NY. Chicago and Vancouver, I can see that to. But Tampa? No offense to Tampa but Tampa? Steve Y clearly is a Jedi Master no doubt about it.
Thoughts?
Dick LeBeau's Contract Up With Steelers...
Doubtful he would come to Philly, but interesting nonetheless.
Peter Forsberg attempting another comeback...
Forsberg was/is my favorite player of all time. As much of a Flyers fan as I am, I truly loved the Aves/Wings feud in the 90's when Foppa was at his best. I'll never forget where I was and what I was doing when I got the call that Forsberg was coming to the Flyers. Sadly, his time here was somewhat disappointing, and as much as I would love nothing more than to see him play again I fear it may be at the price of a legacy that was once so amazing.
