Vikings GM Rick Spielman said Wednesday, per NFL.com. "We're the third overall pick, so we'll be looking at all the options. If someone wants to come up and get our pick, we're going to be more than willing to listen."
So, two questions...
What would it take to trade up to three?
And if it cost us our 2nd rounder, do we pull the trigger if Matt Kalil is still on the board at #3?
I understand that would leave us without a 2nd or a 3rd, but you could argue that a once in a generation left tackle could be worth the price, (the argument is strengthened after reviewing Hurney's draft history in round 2).

Russell Wilson...a good backup QB for the Panthers?
So he's realized that he is an average baseball player and has decided to try his hand in the NFL. I'm not sure where he's projected to go in the draft, if at all, but do you think it would be worth giving him a look as a long-term backup to Cam?

DeAngelo Williams is the most explosive back in the NFL
A great metric for measuring the value of runningbacks is explosive plays. We're talking runs of over 20 yards. And believe it or not no one does it better than DeAngelo Williams. In fact, every 14th time he carries the ball, he rips off a 20+ yarder. He finished the season tied for third in the NFL in runs of over 20 yards. When you take into account his limited number of carries, he is by far the most explosive back in the league. Let's take a look at the numbers, after the jump...

What is your opinion on DC Sean McDermott?
Hey there gang. After reading Jaxon's article: Panthers 2011 Midseason Review: Defense, and after spending some time evaluating our defense on film, I have come to formulate an opinion on the job that defensive coordinator Sean McDermott has done so far.
I won't share that opinion right now. The purpose of this fanpost is not to express an opinion, but rather to give CSR members a forum for talking about McDermott specifically, and the defense as a whole.
In general, I think the defense has not really been talked about enough. Neither has the special teams, but that's for another article. Maybe the defense gets pushed to the background because we want to talk about things that make us happy. Clearly those things would be Cam Newton, Steve Smith and the rest of the offense. But I feel like the defense is really the thing that is making us what we are, and that is a 2-6 ball club.

Breaking down the remaining 10 games on the schedule
Its been a while since I've contributed anything worthwhile here (some would say that I've yet to contribute anything worthwhile), so I thought I'd try to take an in-depth look at the rest of the 2011 schedule. This is nothing more than a prognostication, so take it for what its worth...
Washington:
This is a game the Panthers have to win. They are starting John Beck at QB. He isn't very good. Their running game has been surprisingly tame for a Mike Shanahan offense. I feel like we can control their ground game well enough to put the game in the hands of Beck. If we do this, we should win. On the other side of the ball--I have a lot of respect for Washington's defense. They are are veteran group. When you watch them play, you can hear them too. That's a sign of a good defense. I expect it to be low scoring.
Win. Panthers 17, Redskins 10.
Minnesota:
This is the second straight week we face a team at home who is on their second QB so far this year. Another opportunity to win. Obviously the player to watch is Adrian Peterson. There is no stopping him. Not with our defense. If we can hold him to under 125 yards we will win. Ponder may move the ball a little, but we will keep them out of the endzone. On offense, we should be able to put up some points on an aging, depleted Vikings defense. Steve Smith typically has his way with the Vikings secondary.
Win. Panthers 31, Vikings 20.
Tennessee:
Our third straight home game. This Tennessee team is a tough nut to crack. They are good defensively, but as he has been for most of his career, QB Matt Hasslebeck has been erratic. One week they lose to Jacksonville, and the next week they beat the doors off of a very good Baltimore Ravens team. Chris Johnson has been disappointing so far, but there are people who attach his ineffectiveness to his holdout. If that is the case, he should have played himself into game shape by week 10. Again, if we can hold him to under 150 total yards, we have a chance to win. Offensivly, we will struggle against a stingy Tennessee defense who does not allow many yards. Hopefully by week 10 we have improved our yards-to-points ratio, which at the moment is very poor. Expect a squeaker.
Win. Panthers 20, Titans 19.
at Detroit:
Yikes. This game is arguably the toughest game remaining on our schedule. I think the Lions will come back to earth a little bit as the season wears on--as evidenced by their loss at home to a solid 49ers team. On defense, we should be able to contain their running game (should they even try to use it), but I can't see a scenario where we're able to slow down Calvin Johnson. I have a feeling he is going to make some ridiculous catches against us. His last reception in this one will likely be the straw that broke the Camel's back. On offense, we should be able to throw the ball around the yard. Yes they are tough up-front, so I don't expect our running backs to find much success in the ground game, but the 49ers showed us that they will still give up big plays in the passing game. If we were at home I'd like our chances. On Ford Field, not so much.
Loss. Panthers 24, Lions 31.
at Indianapolis:
This team is being punished for their sins. For years they had Peyton Manning to act as a crutch in order to cover for most of their deficiencies. Defensively they are a scrappy bunch, but they give up way too many big plays in the air, and are too small to shut-down the run. I could see Cam having a very, very big game, particularly on the ground. This might be the week he goes off for 100+ rushing yards. We should be clicking in the run game, and with Cam being forced to step up and run more often (due to the pressure from Freeney and Mathis) we could set a new franchise mark for rushing yards in a single game. We control the game and win easily.
Win. Panthers 27, Colts 14.
at Tampa Bay:
This game is going to be tough. It always is. Tampa's Offensive Coordinator, Greg Olson (no relation), has had his way with our defense in recent meetings. Tampa has been able to make big plays on special teams and in the air, and sprinkle in enough successful runs to control the tempo and the clock. We will have to be very efficient in turning good drives into point--something we have struggled with so far. If we can find some success on the ground against this defense, we might make it interesting. But something tells me that we will be out-coached, and we'll look back at this game as being the worst game of the season--as often the game in Tampa is.
Loss. Panthers 16, Bucs 27.
Atlanta:
Time for revenge. Its only week 14, so Atlanta will be gunning for a win here. We have been far more successful against the Falcons when we're at home. I expect this trend to continue. Michael Turner will likely be nicked up, so we'll actually stand a chance in this one. If we can limit the mistakes we made on offense the first time we played them, we have a chance to put up 30+ points. If we do that, at home, we win.
Win. Panthers 31, Falcons 26.
at Houston:
I don't know what to make of the Houston Texans. Some weeks they look unstoppable and other weeks they beat themselves with penalties and turnovers in big spots. They just lost their best defensive player for the remainder of the season in OLB Mario Williams. That should allow Cam to throw the ball under little duress. This will come down to the status of Arian Foster. If he is healthy and ready to go, I don't expect us to be up to the task of shutting him down. So far this year he has not been healthy. But by week 15 he might be back to full strength. I have a feeling that Foster will be limited or out all together. Because of this, Matt Schaub makes a critical error on a potential game-winning drive.
Win. Panthers 23, Texans 20.
Tampa Bay:
Despite getting them back at home, this will be a tough game. Cam will make some mistakes against their seasoned secondary, and we will have to rely on our RBs in critical moments. I have a feeling Tampa's front seven will be banged up by week 16, so we should able to run the ball fairly well. On defense we will still struggle with the balanced Bucs attack. Josh Freeman will make a couple of big plays, but someone will step up on defense and have a couple of interceptions. We have to win this game to garner some much needed respect inside the division. I think we will.
Win. Panthers 27, Bucs 24.
at New Orleans:
The Saints have the easiest remaining schedule in the division. They also have a two game lead. This sets up a throw away game in week 17. No sense in analyzing this one...if we can't beat Chase Daniels and their second-teamers then we got prollums.
Win. Panthers 33, Saints 9.
So there you have it. 10 games left. 8 wins and 2 losses. And a heavy dose of homerism. If this comes to fruition, we will be 9-7. Not sure that's good enough for a wild card spot, but we would roll into the 2012 season with some serious confidence and momentum.
Happy painting and God bless my friends.

How often will the Panthers use a 3-4 defense?
New Panthers HC Ron Rivera (BAMF) has coached a 4-3 defense and a 3-4 defense both to #1 overall defensive rankings. This is impressive. So he knows, clearly, how to make both schemes work. Because of this, I think the Panthers would be remiss to not use any 3-4 wrinkles along with our 4-3 base defense.
Chances are Rivera and new DC Sean McDermott will have some 3-4 looks up their sleeves, if nothing else than to give the opposing offenses another 'something' to prepare for during the week.
Check out the situations in which we might use the 3-4, and who the personnel might be when we use it...after the jump.

BAMF talks about the Bears' "Super Bowl Shuffle" video
The Chicago Bears, who lost just one game that season, shot the video just hours after returning from that one loss - a Monday night game at Miami that derailed a 12-0 start.
"We got back at like six o'clock in the morning, and it was downtown shortly after that. There was no way I was going to show up for that," Rivera said. "I wish I had been there. It went platinum."
So BAMF has a sense of humor? I like him more every day.
NOTE: The bit about the "SB Shuffle" is in the last two paragraphs.
An Early Swing at the Panthers' 2012 Madden Ratings
Hello fellow Panther and NFL fans. We are rapidly approaching the much anticipated release of the Madden ratings (and the game too, I suppose). Well, actually that may be a month or two down the road still, but as we sit here with no OTAs or free agency to talk about, I thought it would be an interesting topic to cover.
I'll keep it simple: I'm going to list each position one by one. Then I'll put in each player at that position, and then give them an overall rating. To add some sizzle (okay, so its not that exciting), I'll put their best three attribute ratings below their overall rating.
The players will be entered in as if we are putting together a depth chart. If a player is not on the list, then assume that they did not make the final 53-man roster (based solely on my opinion, obviously). I will not try to add potential free agents we haven't signed yet, as realistically, most or all of them will probably be signed elsewhere.
If you see a player (i.e. Matt Moore) on the roster, and you don't agree that they will be on the team, and you comment about how stupid it is to include that player, then you didn't read my half-baked disclaimer about how its just my opinion...so shame on you.
Will I be way off on a bunch of them? Yes. Will my Panther homerism permeate its pungent aroma throughout the article? Absolutely Yes.
Nonetheless, let's check out my projected overall ratings for your Carolina Panthers after the jump.
Norwood to play at DE exclusively
It is in the last couple of paragraphs of this Smitty update by J. Person.
I think this is a smart move. I'm not sure why the "linebacker" position was even tied to Eric. He's a pass-rusher, as he says.
I actually really like how we have a pair of small, quick DEs and another pair of big, powerful DEs.
Our Darren Sproles
Make it happen, Marty. Top undrafted free agent signing...mark it down.
"I look at it like, if you go back in the history of football, (when) the game was started, it started up front," he said. "Some people were scared and backed up off the ball. But the real bulls stayed up front and played the game."

Panthers have NFL's Toughest Schedule in 2011
Thank the rest of the NFC South for this one. Odd that the team with the worst record in 2010 would have the toughest schedule in 2011. But this fan wouldn't want it any other way...Your going to have to beat the best teams to win a Super Bowl, so you might as well get some practice in the regular season.
Blaine Gabbert: "Nothing special"
A Big, Fat: THIS!
Flame on.
Marcus Stroud released by Bills
Marcus Stroud's name was once synonymous with run-stopping from the DT position. Since leaving Jacksonville for a bigger paycheck, Stroud has shed 40 pounds to play DE in their 3-4 defense.
Before the Bills switched to a 3-4, during his first season in Buffalo, Stroud was an early defensive MVP candidate, helping their run-defense improve from dead last to 9th, until a late-season collapse dropped them to 20th.
Stroud will likely try to get back to 310-320lbs before next season, (he played at 330+ in JAX) in hopes of signing with a team running a 4-3--a scheme in which he was far more effective.
Do the Panthers show any interest in one of the better interior defensive lineman available? They did not so much as kick the tires on Shaun Rodgers, but Stroud does not have the same baggage.
At some point the Panthers will have to stop treating free agents like venereal diseases.
Panthers Targeting "Five to Eight" Players with No. 1 Pick
Marty Hurney made a radio appearance on Charlotte's WFNZ last week. Hurney, in his decade as an NFL general manager, has mastered the art of talking without saying anything. He was asked mostly about the draft, naturally, as that is the only event on the 2011 NFL calendar written in ink.
Hurney would not address whether or not the Panthers were interested in specific players with the first overall pick, but instead he said they were going to do more homework on a group of "five to eight" players. We can all recite his go-to line by now: "I think you have to pick an impact player at an impact position."
Since there is not a single player who is considered a 'lock' for the first overall pick, Panther fans will have to spend the next two months doing their best Sherlock Holmes impression, filtering through all the misdirection and subterfuge while trying get inside the minds of the Panthers' brass--all in hopes of identifying, and then separating these five to eight players.
First we need to try and identify these five to eight impact players. We know that in order to make the list, a player has to play an 'impact' position. Marty Hurney may have a different opinion on what constitutes a certain position being impactful, but let's try to eliminate a few positions nonetheless...
Positions deemed most 'impactful' by the author are:
Quarterback, Tailback, Wide Receiver, and Offensive Tackle on offense, and then Defensive Tackle, Defensive End, Rush Linebacker, and Cornerback on defense.
In the spirit of being thorough, let's identify the top two players at each of these positions (based on the author's objective opinion):

South Carolina TE Saunders Ineligible for 2011 Draft
My first thought was "he's not three years removed from HS?"
That's not it...his ineligibility stems from a "paper-work" issue.
Not sure that he is even on the Panther's draft board because of the suspension, but he will probably be one of the few players with real potential in the Supplemental Draft.
Scott Turner pegged as Offensive Quality Control Assistant
Turner, 28, is the son of San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner. His familiarity with the Panthers' new offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski no doubt influenced this decision.
SI's Don Banks and his First Mock Draft
Banks thinks the Panthers ultimately pass on Gabbert and take Fairley.
Interesting that Robert Quinn goes 6th to Cleveland (seems a bit early in light of his suspension), and that Cam Newton goes 10th to the 'Skins (two first-round Auburn QBs in seven drafts?).
A Look at the 56 Early Entries to the 2011 Draft
This year there will be a record number of underclassmen who have declared for the NFL draft. The CBA uncertainty probably contributed to the 56 early entries, as all of these young men must be aware that there will be a rookie pay scale in place in the coming years. It would take forever to breakdown all 56 prospects on this list, so I will simply post the list, and welcome any and all comments and evaluations. Check out all of these intriguing prospects after the jump...
SI.com mock draft has Blaine Gabbert as the #1 selection
I can't pretend that I've seen enough of this kid to have any strong opinion about this, but purely from a reactionary standpoint, I don't like it.
He can run a bit, has a good arm, has good pocket awareness, and he has prototypical size. With all that, picking Nick Fairley is much more of a sure thing. We need a sure thing, regardless of what position he plays.
If a QB must be selected in this draft, wait until the third round (or later), and then bring in a veteran. Let there be a legitimate three horse race in the preseason.

SI's Top 10 Defensive Backs in 2011 Draft
Number one and two are CBs Prince Amukamara and Patrick Patterson, respectively.
If a certain Stanford QB decides to go back to school, I'm pretty sure both of these guys will be on the Panthers' 'big-board.'
Assuming Richard Marshall is not resigned, the Panthers will have a need at CB. Who, if anyone on this list, intrigues you?
Steve Smith's House is on the Market?
We know how fond Mike Florio of ProfootballTalk is about our buddy Steve Smith. I'm not sure this is legit, or just more of Florio's quest to destroy Steve's career. I for one would not be terribly surprised if this turns out to be true. But Steve; good luck selling a $2M+ house in this economic climate.

Midseason MVPs for all 32 Teams
"You have to look long and hard for bright spots, but Anderson is one. In his first year as a full-time starter, he has shown a knack for making plays. "
The Panthers garnered the dreaded "dead in the water" comment seen above that naturally even Buffalo, SF, and Dallas eluded. Ahh, this is me longing to be ignored. Its much better than being the only downtrodden team in the NFL in a national article.
A Stone has been Cast
Perhaps its a stone thrown with subterfuge and cunning, but...
"If the saints can jump up to a huge lead early:
I really hope they rest all their starters for the second half. We really can’t deal with anymore key injuries this season. Now that a few of the big playmakers are coming back, I would hate to see them get hurt against the panthers!"
With the 5th pick in the 2011 NFL draft, the Carolina Panthers select...
Physically, this guy is a beast. He looks like a LB playing corner. He will be a nice replacement for Marshall.
What do you guys think? I know its a bit early to start draft talk, but talking about this season is depressing.
Who do you like if we have a top 5 or 6 pick?
