WHAT A GAME! WHAT A TEAM! Sure does feel good to be a Denver fan right now, huh? It's late, I'm physically exhausted from all the tension and the hollering and jumping but there is NO WAY I am going to sleep right now so I'll just throw out some things I noticed during the game in hopes of generating some discussions as I LOVE the intelligent ideas that get born daily here at MHR. I'll start with the other sideline first and save the best (Denver) for last.

Some things I noticed about San Diego;

1) I have felt for awhile now that the Bolts are a rather pompous and arrogant team. You will find this very often in individuals who have amazing natural gifts. They take things for granted and rely on their gifts to pull them out at the last moment. You can see this in all walks of life. There is just alot of people like this. San Diego is a TEAM of these types. 3 years of starting out slow in the season then turning it on when they finally have to finally has caught up to them. The only real reason they have been so successful (IMHO) has been the weakness of the AFC West. Those days are gone and San Diego just had a rude awakening to that fact. Make no mistake, they are not out of the playoff hunt, but I believe it will take several years at best before they really stand a chance of reclaiming the AFC West. Again, just my opinion.

2) Cromartie saved his job tonight. I heard that they had considered benching him for Cason during their bye week. Well I guess he didn't like that idea. He played a GREAT game. He gave MAX effort from what I could see. He seemed to always be around the ball, he had several pass break-ups and he made quite a few important 1-on1 tackles. If I recall correctly there were also two plays where the Denver receivers made good plays to break-up what surely would have been Cromartie INTs. Good game for Cromartie.

3) Norv Turner. Aaahhh, Norv. Your team had REALLY better put the pedal to the metal for the rest of the season for you to come back next season. And even then I doubt you will be back. I will say however that I feel there is just NO WAY Norv gets axed during this season. I have already heard the rumblings, but I just don't see this happening. First off, SD is still very much in the playoff hunt and you can believe those players are going to be playing their best for the rest of the season. Second, there are a lot of good/great coaches who will be available next year. The list includes Shanny, Holmgren, Cowher, and probably Gruden. There will also be coordinators who will get offers including, I'm sure, Mike Nolan. One of these guys will be coaching in SD next year. My money would be on Holmgren.

4) San Diego's O-Line is in miserable shape. The only time I saw them opening gaps was on passing plays and instead of LT darting through the holes it was the Denver D. Terrible performance by them.

5) I don't care what Rivers' persona may be off the field (douche?), the kid can play football. When he drops back I get nervous. But even his skills couldn't hold up to the pressure Denver brought down on him tonight. Hell, Manning wouldn't have been able to do much with that. I'm sure that someone will post the numbers of hurries/hits/sacks here in the next 24 hours, all I know was it was A LOT!

6) Speaking of Rivers, that little pregame "beautiful mind" segment was such a load of self-serving BS I almost threw-up in my mouth. I mean, c'mon! The guy is standing in a glass box with dry-erase marker all over the glass pretending to be calling out pre-snap reads. That was stupid. It was acting. It was Hollywood. It goes right back to my "pompous" comment in my first point. Can you EVER see Orton doing that? Hell no! And that's why we love him, "Neckbeard of Victory" and all.

7) I don't know about you, but when I saw San Diego players come up to our team during warm-ups and basically try to start a fight, I got REAL happy. To me that didn't speak of confidence and swagger. That spoke of fear and lack of discipline. I KNEW B-Dawk and the boys would use that. Our problem has often been that we come into a game thinking too much and too amped up and we have to get settled in. I had a feeling that display of vulgarity by the Dolts would help Denver immediatly get into the zone and show their confidence and discipline. Dumb Dolts.

Now The Goods: Our Denver Broncos!

1) 6-0!!! Nothing else really needs to be said, but I'll say it anyways cause I'm still amped and want to talk.

2) Our O-Line is the best in the NFL. Period. I'm sure during these next two weeks stats will be posted to prove this point but I think we can all see it already. Orton had all day to let his receivers get open. Clady gave up another sack. That's 2 in 2 games and it's good to know that he is, in fact, a human being and not a genetically altered science experiment gone horribly right. I believe that now officially will make 2.5 sacks in 22 games. WOW ! Our big boys up front were making holes, firing out into the second level of the Defense, pulling, blocking, flippin pancakes like they worked at IHOP, anything and everything you could want an O-Line to do. I mean, did Merriman actually play in tonight's game? I saw him in warm-ups. I saw him pushing and talkin smack during the "scuffle", I saw him takin his helmet off on the sidelines, but when the ball was snapped he was like Houdini. Just dissapeared. Oh, wait, he was that powder blue shape wrapped up in Clady's man-hands all night. That's right.

3)Is there anyone alive who still thinks Orton is a bad QB? Or even just a mediocre QB? Noodle armed QB? The guy was throwin darts all night. He was putting the ball in tight spaces. The few times I saw him "miss" a throw, he put the ball in the only place it could go and the receiver was just unable to make the play. Kyle was makin smart reads, playin safe when there was nothing available, and just playing truely solid football. Kyle will be our signal-caller for years to come. Count on that. And he is only 26!

4) My god! The half-time adjustments on this team are just absolutely awe-inspiring. I got to watch the game with my Mom tonight (She got me into football when I was 5) and I kept telling her through-out the first quarter "Relax. We only get better as the game goes on. Watch what happens after we make our second half adjustments." Know what happened? Domination. I don't have any stats in-front of me but if I remember correctly we gave up 1 third down conversion in the second half. And that was on a PI call. 1!!!! And that was 1 more then we gave up the prior 2 games before this! UN-F'ing-REAL!

5) This defense gets it done. They knew that SD is a vertical passing team. They don't dink and dunk. They go big. So how do you stop that? You don't give the QB time to make those big plays. And Denver brought the heat. Career high 5 sacks for Rivers. During one of their last 3-and-outs Rivers picked himself up off the ground (yet again), looked around for a second like "WTF?", and then just walked off the field smiling. There was nothing else he could do. That kind of pressure is insurmountable.

6) After getting his butt vigourously chewed out last week during the NE game, Mike Priefer brought his A-game this week. Did the special teams make mistakes? Absolutely. Did Prater's kick-offs suck almost all night? Absolutely. Did the return game suck like it has been all season? HELL NO!

7) Game-changing performance by a WR who didn't catch one pass. Outstanding job Royal! I am a BIG fan of Royal's and I love seeing him have success. Something about him just says he deserves it.

8) Speaking of which, did you see the clip of McD talking to Royal after that first return TD? McD is in Royal's ear. Royal looks very serious as if he is getting play information. Then his mouth opens up into that extremely warm, genuine smile and you can see the pride swell in his eyes. It reminds me of the look my daughter gets when she has been trying something for awhile and has been continually failing, then she gets it right and I tell her what a great job she has done. Same look. And this team is chalked-full of that kind of genuine desire to be great. Really just makes you feel good about rooting for this team.

9) Anyone catch that smashing block BMarsh threw on that short-gain screen? I don't know who he hit, but whoever it was is gonne be S O R E tomorrow. Did you also catch the next SD defender right after that grab Marshall's leg as he was falling and twist it? Maybe it was just me, and I don't want to accuse anyone of dirty play, but that looked like an intentional attempt to hurt Brandon. Brandon was slow to get up after that. It was also the same ankle that he was limping on earlier in the game. I'm not sayin, I'm just sayin....

10) Great game by Sheff! GREAT catch for the TD. What a match-up nightmare that guy is for opposing Defenses. You already have to game plan for Marshall, Royal, Stokely, Moreno, Graham and others. Then you throw in this 6'5", 255 lb beast who gets off the line in a hurry, runs exceptionally fact for a man of his size and has hands of gold. What can you do against that?

I could go on and on and on. There was just so many great plays, both individually and as a team. So many great stories! That's one of the best things about this team this year in my mind. So many great stories of overcoming difficulty, of dedication, desire, the will to succeed. I LOVE THIS TEAM!

I look forward to hearing your comments and reading your posts. And just a quick thank you to Guru and Co. for creating and maintaining the best fan site in all of sports. Excellent job!

So many great stories...

A fan's 'lil story 'bout the Champ

Hello all. I just read that article in today's horsetracks (Thank you NYC for your dedication to finding all the stories every morning so we don't have to) about Champ Bailey's unorthodox mechanics and it reminded me of a story I though I would share. (FYI, long and indulgent story. Read at your own risk)

About 6 years ago I moved from Virginia Beach, VA (where I now reside again) to Tampa, FL. While living in Tampa I made quite a few friends and one of these friends had season tickets to the Buc's games. This was back in 2004 and so when the season's schedule came out and I saw the Bucs played Denver in week 4 I immediatly began hounding this friend to take me with him. He had a girl he was trying to impress at that time (who would later become his wife) and refused my inquiries / friendly calls / bribes / threats / promises of decapitation. He did, however, go out and find me 2 tickets to the game. Friendship saved, and off to the game I went eagerly anticipating an upclose look at my beloved Broncos but having no idea I would witness the most amazing feat of physical ability my eyes would ever see (with the exception of the cirque du soleil cause those performers are, in fact, not human and so don't count in this story).

So I'm sitting in my seat, WAY up towards the very top of the second tier of Tampa's Raymond James Stadium. By my side is a good friend who enjoys football but has no real allegiances. Two rows behind me sits two drunkin Bucs fan who continually heckle me much to the dismay of the mother who sits one row in front of me with her two adolescent kids. We are all on the Eastern side of the stadium and that Florida sun just sits on us all afternoon, burning and cooking with total irregard. In other words, life is GREAT cause it's FOOTBALL!

So here I sit, enjoying a low scoring game where neither side can get much going all day long. I watch Shannahan lurk and yell and scan his clipboard and yell and lurk some more. I watch Plummer make a good safe play followed by a wild cowboy play that almost leads to an interception. I watch our defense play a decent game. Nothing extraordinary from either team. Nothing explosive. Just a grind-em-out type game. Then I see IT. And IT was oh, oh, oh so sweet.

Champ Bailey has Joey Galloway one-on-one. Galloway goes into motion. The play clock is expiring and he has to travel from one side all the way to the other so he sprints. You can see his effort as he pushes and drives his legs to carry him behind his line and across the field. His head is down and he is sprinting in motion as hard ans as fast as he can. And there go goes Champ, following Joey in motion. Shadowing him. Keeping pace with him step for step. EXCEPT! Champ is running SIDEWAYS!

Now that may not sound like much and I imagine if you've read this long "'lil story" this far perhaps you feel a sense of let down after the build up. But I assure you, it was without a doubt the most amazing physical feat I have witnessed with my barenaked eyes. The way his legs crossed and weaved around him as his torso stayed facing Galloway. The unbelievable fluid motion of Champ's hips. I have never seen a jaguar in full sprint (and I hope I never do) but I imagine the display of that level of physical harmony and ability is awe inspiring. That is what I saw that day with Champ. Words cannot express how perfect and beautifull his motion was. I didn't know humans could do that.

So there I sat, WAY up in the sky looking down. My necked a dark red from the sun's unrelenting assualt. My ears full of the curses and unintelligible berations of the drunkin idiots behind me. My friend smiling serenly like some Hindu Cow, content to just be there even though football isn't his thing. There I sat, my jaw open wide, my eyes seeing but not believing. We went on to win the game but honestly I couldn't tell you one play we ran. I'm sure there were plenty of bootlegs (this was, after all, the Plummer years), but the only thing I can tell you, the only picture I can describe to you from the actual game itself, is this 'lil story about the Champ. It is no wonder he can play so unorthodox and be successful where others would fail. Champ has physical gifts that few, if any, possess.

Sure am glad he's on our side.

Im not a huge Mayock fan, but this is a good video of Marshall's TD. You can see what Newman was talkin about with the jersey pull though. Marshall is coming out of the jam and yanks Newman's jersey to get him off-balance and gives him a step. BUT, you can also see Newman give up on the play. My personal opinion? I think these things happen every play in the NFL. I think Newman needed to be more aggressive when the pass was in the air and he DEFINITELY shouldn't have given up after he got juked twice.

Yes sir!" HAHAHAHA

Also, his pep-talk with the offense is GREAT! I freakin love this guy! Total man-crush. I'm not ashamed to admit it.

Came across these two great videos on nfl.com. The first is part of their livewire programming. It goes into Shanny's career with Elway, the lost years after Elway's retirement and the renaissance of the Denver QB since Cutler's arrival. It has a ton of great sound clips of Shanny talking to his QBs.

A system that could be applicable NOW

With the admissions of DJ and Champ that have come to light since the NE meltdown, many members of MHR, Hoosier in particular, have discussed the lack of a recognizable system and identity for our beloved Broncos.

The reasons for this lack of identity can be speculated and hypothesized until we all turn blue in the face but quite frankly I don't think we will ever know for sure because we are not inside the franchise. We are not at the meetings. We don't all play catch in Cutler's backyard.

So instead of going back and forth about why this apparent system meltdown has occurred, let's get into something we can discuss;

What system can Denver run NOW?

Let's look at the Offense this time around and the defense next week

Offense through 7 weeks:

In the first 3 games of the season Denver came out swinging for the fences. They're offense was so dynamic people started talking about the second coming of the Joe Montana 49ers days. Denver's pass attack was so frighteningly talented that teams were forced to concern themselves solely on that aspect. As a result Denver was able to run at-will producing the NFLs highest YPA average on the ground. Why was this?

Denver came out throwing A LOT! Of course it worked well. Besides the fact that we have a talented QB and receivers, WHO WOULD THINK DENVER WOULD BE A PASS FIRST TEAM!? Of course it worked. When you think of Denver, you think of running. No where else in the NFL is the sentiment "My grandmother could get 1,000 yards behind that line" more applicable then Broncoland. So when we come out gunning, defenses are caught off guard. By the time they figure it out, we're up by 3 scores.

But after week 3 teams took a different approach. They started running a conservative cover 2 on us, forcing Cutler to throttle back his attack and take the dink and dunk throws. This stole much of Denver's offensive momentum. We were still a really good offense, but the 40+ point games were gone. Add in injuries and turnovers and all of a sudden the rocket ship that was our offense now appears to be sitting on the launch deck, waiting for the clouds to pass.

So what now?

Many here among us, again HT in particular, have noted the lack of a solid running game. HT and others have made the point multiple times that a solid running game would help to solidify the offense, set up the passing game, and give the defense a chance to breathe.

I think Hoosier (and others) is correct. 3 years ago we had a dominant 13-3 team with an offense that carried us (along with solid defensive play) to the AFC championship (where hippy-boy layed an egg).

That offense was run on a well-run stretch / zone block running game led by a RB TANDEM of Anderson and Bell who ran for 1,014 yards and 921 yards respectively. This stretch running game was then further utilized by the play action bootleg where a mobile QB in Hippy-Boy could get out of the pocket, find the open receiver or run it (or throw an INT, depending on which Plummer decided to show up that week). That offensive scheme worked extraordinarily well. By the end of the 2005 regular season Denver was averaging a whopping 360.4 Yards per game (5th in the NFL). They key to this system was confusion and efficient application. Denver has long prefered smaller, faster OLmen to run their zone block running game. Now add in the stretch and the defensive front 7 are at an extreme disadvantage. Now once you get that running game humming and defences are caught in the run-stop, start throwing in play action bootlegs. Get the defense going one way then have the QB run the other. The defences front 7 have over committed to the stretch and are out of position. The defences' backfield bit on the play action and are out of position. So now your QB is away from pressure and receivers are open. Worse case scenario the DBs didn't bite and your receivers are covered? No problem! The QB tucks it in and runs for 6-12 yards. Genius!

Now let's compare the cast of 2005 that ran that offense with the cast of 2008 and imagine the differences if were able to succesfully go back to that system.

QB - In 2005 the Broncos were headed by a gunslinging, 4th quarter comeback type in Plummer. Plummer had a reputation for big plays and big mistakes. In 2008 we are headed by a gunslinging, start out white hot and stay white hot type in Cutler. Cutler is creating a reputation for Huge plays and some mistakes. Plummer was below average in the pocket and great out of the pocket and on the run. Cutler is good-to-borderline-exceptional in the pocket and extraordinary out of the pocket and on the run. Can you even imagine cutler running the offense of 2005 with defences running around confused and Cutler running around burning holes in the secondary?

Advantage? Duh- not hippy-boy

RB - In 05 the guys in the backfield were Anderson and Bell. If you will recall 2005 was when the general NFL buzz started talking more and more about the advantage of a solid 1-2 punch tyoe of RB tandem, as opposed to the single play-maker type, and much of that discussion was sparked by the Denver backfield who ended the regular season just 79 yards shy (Bell) of being one of only 2 or 3 teams in NFL history to have two 1,000 yard rushers in a single season. They were a solid match with Anderson being the bruising between the tackle runner who could also break a few big ones and Bell who was a quick, slash and dash style change up. You almost felt sorry for the defensive coordinators scheming against these two guys. In 2008 we see the same consensus style of running back stable, albeit less defined. In pittman we find an aged counterpart to Anderson's role, a strong, smash-mouth, between the tackles type with outstanding second effort. And the similarities between Young and Bell are almost eerie. Both were taller, underweight, slim slash and dash style runners with great speed. Bell fumbled more then Young. Young is hurt more then Bell. The main differences here being that the Pittman-Young duo has not been utilized due to depth chart issues (Pittman was not considered a true starter type until the Jax game) and Injury issues. Also enter the Torain factor who is an unknown coming off a broken arm who should see playing time after the bye. Personally I won't say much on Torain because I have never seen anything from him and all this "Torain will save the season!" hype has put me in a "show me something first" frame of mind.

Advantage? Anderson / Bell* (Note the asterick. I think that if Young can get healthy and Torain can live up to half the hype then the 2008 squad gets the nod here. But I don't go on if's)

OL- 2005 starters; LT Lepsis, LG Hamilton, C Nalen, RG Myers/Carlisle RT Foster. 2008 Starters; LT Clady, LG Hamilton, C Weigman (sp) RG Kuper, RT Harris. Now, you WILL NOT hear me say that the rookie Ryan Clady is better now then the 2005, tail-end-of-his-prime Lepsis. Ask me again in a year or two. What I will say is that overall I like our OL now better then that of 05. The same outstanding LG, a C who has suprised us all in being just an ever-so-slight drop from Nalen (which is saying A LOT), a significant upgrade in RG and a possibly over-performing RT as opposed to the old under-acheiver that was eventually sent packing to Detroit. I think over all the 2008 OL is slightly better then the 2005 OL if for no other reason then Clady's solid performance and an upgraded right side. My only question would be how capable would this young, inexperienced OL be in picking up the stretch / zone scheme run so well in 2005? We know the guys now are doing a great job running the spread / zone scheme which is a little less mobile of a system. A little less complex. But if they could pick it up, can you imagine the possibilities?

Advantage? The current crew by a hair (when you take into consideration the overall higher skill of the current squad contrasted by their lack of repetional exposure to the stretch / zone that the 2005 crew did day in and day out)

WR / TE: All I can say is WOW. What a difference 3 years makes. 2005 will be remembered, at least in part, as the year of the under-performing WR. With the exception of Rod Smith, every other WR was shown the door not long after 2005 came to a close. Lelie, potentially one of the biggest draft dissapointments in recent bronco history, led the NFL in Yards per catch. Why then, you may ask, was he a dissapointment? Because the deep route was the ONLY thing he could do. Nobody could explain his dissapearance in anything other then the deep route. He couldn't catch the ball if he wasn't in full sprint with nobody between him and the end zone. He has since gone to that big home in the NFL where all underacheivers go to retire, Oakland. Behind him was Darius "Dont-hand-me-your-baby-cause-I'll-drop-it" Watts. He was lightning fast. Amazingly fast! One of the quickest guys on the field. He couldn't catch a loaf of bread if you handed it to him. Behind him? David Terrell, perennial under-performer from the big Chi, Charlie Adams (a larger, slower version of Watts) and Todd Devoe (who? exactly). On the TE side we had Mr. Tackling Dummy, Jeb Putzier (My god did that guy get laid out a lot! But he sure did have heart.) followed closely by Mr. Im-a-national-television-commercial-star-although-I've-never-done-anything-on-the-field-of-any-importance, Stephen Alexander. Then there's Wesley Duke, the failed Antonio Gates wanna be (I will say that in Madden 06 my Wesley Duke was an absolute STUD! Shame He couldn't hit the triangle button enough in real life) and Mike Leach, who will never take an NFL snap on anything other then 4th down EVER because he is the NFL's best long-snapper.

I don't even need to go into the current roster. We all know who we have at WR/TE. Now, can you imagine 2005's offense with 2008's WR/TE roster!?!?!? W O W.....

Advantage? WOOOWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!

Now, having said all of this, you may say "But ECB, other then turnovers, the offense isn't the problem! It's those bums on Defence!" And to you, my friend, I say "Eehhh, kinda. Kinda not" Yes, the defense has many problems (which many have gotten into and I will get into when I continue this post next week) but let me ask you this: Imagine what our Defense would look like if you gave us back say even half of the TOs our offense has produced? Denver is currently second worst in the NFL in TurnOver Differential. (Both us and the Texans are at -9 but Houston has played 1 less game so they get first place) What would our defense look like if our offense wasn't ranked 25th in the NFL in average Time-Of-Possession Per Game? What would our defense look like if our offense's running game was able to pound out the last half of a game and demoralize the opponent while eating up the clock? What kind of confidence would our defense have if they knew that once we captured a lead in the game, our offense would go out there and successfully grind it out? So while I agree the defense needs a major overhaul, the offense is entitled to it's fair share of the blame.

It seems to me if we could take this amazing 2008 offensive squad and get them running that stretch / zone scheme that has worked so well for so long before, a lot of the problems that our team faces would suddenly dissappear.

But that's just my take. What's yours?

15-1 is solely in the hands of MHR

Hello all. I am a long time lurker who finally decided to join in on the conversations. I figure there is still a small amount of time I spend at work when I am actually working instead of trolling around MHR so the only rational thing to do would be to sign up and start posting so I can go ahead and kill those few hours as well! :)

I am writing this in a matter of the utmost urgence! I am writing this as a plea to the powers that be, here at MHR.

Many folks have said we won on Sunday because our defence stepped up. Many have said it was because we played a full 60 minutes. Many have said we won because we finally found our pass rush. And yes, all of these things did happen. But that is not why we won. The reason we won is very simple;

Good Luck Bikini Thread!!!

You see my friends, the logic is proof enough. Denver has played 5 regular season games. MHR has featured the Bikini Thread 4 times. We have won 4 games. Coincidence? I think not!

And so it is, as if written in some childhood fairytale where the insignificant suddenly hold the fate of the world in their tiny hands, so it is that WE, the holders of the Bronco flame, find ourselves in total control of the Denver season. Post the Bikini Thread - Denver Wins. Ban the Bikini Thread - Get beat by the frickin CHEIFS!

Now, my fellow brethen, be forewarned that such a power as we now possess comes with great responsibilities and HEAVY burdens. Many of you will have to resist the temptations of such power while at work for fear that the woman in the cubicle next to you may take offense. To you I say, "PERSEVERE!" Many of you will have to bear the lashings when your respective wives stumble upon you oggling a half-naked supermodel. To you I say, "STAY STRONG MY BROTHER!" Many of you will find yourselves awake in the wee hours of the night, bleary-eyed, lips crusted over and fingers bent, caloused and bleeding as you search with utter relentlessness to find the ultimate good luck bikini girl to post on MHR for us all to bask in her glory. To you I say, "Dude, she's flippin HOT! Thx. Good work."

The fate of the Denver season rests solely in your courage and perseverence, my friends. There is no second place here! There is no timeouts for us! Heavy lies the crown, my friends. Heavy lies the crown!

And remember, they may take our lives, but they will never take..... OUR BIKINI THREAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
