Does Luck Matter in Baseball?
Some of you may have read the last paper I uploaded that me and a partner worked on for our sports statistics class. Well this is the final paper I wrote for that class. The results were pretty mixed in the end. So here it is if you're looking for something to read.

Is Granderson Streaky?
This is a research paper my classmate and I wrote for our Sports Statistics class in high school. We took a look at Curtis Granderson's statistics for the 2010 season and tried to explain if he was consistent or not. Our results were very inconclusive in the end, but that was expected for the most part. So I just thought I'd show you guys the paper incase you're bored and want something to read. It doesn't conclude anything special as the results are inconclusive but it may be an interesting read, or not.

Game Thread 7/3
THIS IS NOT THE GAME THREAD.
Click the title and it will send you to Jscape's game thread. Once again the thread was made but didn't come to the front page again I'm guessing due to technical difficulties.

Use this for whatever you feel like discussing:
Is Phil Hughes our best starter?
David Brown of Yahoo Sports' Big League Stew certainly thinks so:
From Morning Juice (link):
Yankees 8, Tigers 2 (Game 2): Phil Hughes(notes) is the best pitcher on the Yankees. Yes, I said it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ignoring the fact that the score is incorrect (NYY 8, DET 0), Brown makes a very, well I guess you could call it gutsy, statement. The rest of our rotation consists of:
Former Cy Young winner C.C. Sabathia.
Former AL-Strikeout champion A.J. Burnett.
2-time 20 game winner Andy Pettitte.
Dominant when "on" starter Javier Vazquez.
Right now, Hughes is our 5th starter, though he certainly isn't pitching like one. Hughes (5-0, 1.38) is pitching better than anyone else in the rotation. However, to suggest that he is our best pitcher overall is certainly going a bit too far. Yet, it doesn't feel wrong to consider it because he has pitched amazingly well this season, going at least 5 innings and giving up no more than 2 runs in any of his starts.
Still, the fact remains that this is Hughes' first full season starting. It's also only been six starts. Burnett looked like he turned a new corner before giving up 8 earned runs in just 4.1 innings in Boston. But who didn't see that coming? We've turned Burnett into a bit of a Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde character; it was only a matter of time before "Bad AJ" finally showed up.
It's hard not to wonder just how good Hughes is this season. It certainly appears that he has ace-like material and will be our #1 sometime in the near future. But how good is he now? Is he just off to a hot start or is he really this good? He is almost certainly not going to end the year with a 1.38 ERA. But the question is, will his ERA be around 2.55, among the elite pitchers in the game? Or will it be between 3.00 and 4.00? Very good numbers and even better considering his experience. It could also be 4.62 or close to 5.00; that seems unimaginable considering his start.
I don't know how good Hughes is right now. What I am certain of is that at least once this season, some team (hopefully not Boston) is going to DESTROY Hughes (something along the lines of (2.2, 7 ER)). If that somehow doesn't happen, I will be very happy to have been wrong, but chances are it will happen.
Is Hughes our best starter? The answer is, it's way too early to tell. CC and AJ are both very good pitchers with impressive careers, to say that Hughes is, right now, better than both of them as a whole is probably not an assertion that is easy to defend. At the end of this season, the best mark to tell how good a starter's season was is probably their ERA. If Hughes finishes with a better ERA than Sabathia and Burnett (not saying he'll definately beat Pettitte and Vazquez, but it's easier to say he's better than those two), then there will likely be a bit of a competition in Spring Training between him and CC for the Opening Day start.
Right now, though, with only six starts, I'm not quite sure how good Phil Hughes is. He certainly looks very good, but we'll likely need to wait for the end of this season (and probably a good bit of next season) to see how good Hughes is compared to CC or AJ.
Gaines Adams dies of heart attack
How awful, condolences to his family, RIP Gaines Adams.
Matt Holliday Resigns with St. Louis
Roughly seven years and 17 million per year.
Flacco's 2nd season?
Last year our offense was run on first, run on second, run on third, pass occasionally. It had to be with Flacco only in his rookie season. His stats last year were great for a rookie, nowhere near a pro-bowl level, but he kept turnovers to a minimum.
Steve Smith wants extension
Steve Smith wants an extension on his contract after this season. Currently he is set to make $550,000 next season.
What to do with 62?
No doubt that this will be discussed once again. Joba showed us that for the most part, he's still highly effective as a reliever and he was awful in the final weeks of the season starting, ERA jumping from around 3.5 to 4.2.
Looking back at the days after the All-Star Break, Chamberlain went 3-0 with I think an 0.87 ERA. All of his starts were great. Chamberlain has shown us that he definately has the potential to be a top-tier starter. His greatest start of the year was probably at Tampa Bay on July 29th.
J. Chamberlain: 8.0 IP, 3H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K. At that point his ERA was 3.58, lower than both CC and AJ.
This is a key season for Joba. The Joba Rules are probably gone for good. At this point, I think our starting rotation next year will be: Sabathia, Burnett, Pettitte, Chamberlain, Hughes. We don't know when we'll get Wang back but he'll probably replace Hughes or Chamberlain.
If the rules are gone next season and he still struggles like he did at the end of this season, I think it's time to send him to the bullpen for good.
Someone told me that they read something about the Yankees sending Joba down to AAA to work it out if he pitches poorly next season. I don't know where he read this, Fox Sports or something, I can't verify it.
That was tough, but Game 6 in the Bronx awaits
Tough loss to swallow. Then again, what loss in the World Series isn't tough?
Game 6 back at home. Likely Pettitte versus Martinez. Today we saw that seeing a pitcher a second time is big for our lineup. 5 runs against Cliff Lee is huge.
People are going to point Burnett's horrible start to pitching on short rest. I doubt that was it. AJ is always imploding and throwing gems and imploding every other week. I feel Andy will give us a solid start tommorow, he's always been consistent. He may be old, but I don't think he'll suffer too much from getting one less day of rest.
Great fight in this team. Can't say I am angry that we threw Coke out there, he seemed like the right choice with Marte pitching a lot, but it backfired. Good news is that we saw good things out of Robertson, Aceves, and Hughes.
Honestly, I expected AJ to dazzle us and outduel Lee tonight. Something similar to Andy vs Smoltz. It didn't happen. We'll be fine.
By the way, let's NOT pitch to Chase Utley anymore.
CC Sabathia will start game 4 on short rest
I realize that most everyone thought thise would happen, but the announcement is now official.
