NoMaas feels emotionally detached from the team. I'm shocked. How can you emotionally detached from a team that is playing like the Yankees are now. Reasons I'm excited about the Yankees:

1 Mike Mussina - Is Mike Mussina the lynchpin of our team? So many people discounted him as being done, but instead he has changed his style and is pitching well. Extremely well. If he is able to give us 170-180 innings of quality ball alot of the pressure will be taken off the kids. I hope that happens.

2 Mariano Rivera - I know its old news, but shit, the guy is good. And not just oh I'm Mariano Rivera I'm better than everyone else on the planet, so far he has been better than anyone could have expected. Completely dominating hitters.

3 Hideki Matsui - Dude is among the league leaders in batting. Sorry I wanted to trade you. He seems to be ok in the DH role.

4 Melky Cabrera - I always feel good when Melky does well, because he was never really supposed to do well. (I get the same feelings for Aaron Small) He came up to fill in for injuries. He stayed because we liked what we saw. The year started off with Cashman warning him that center field wasn't his, and that he had to battle for his position. Noted and answered.

5 Andy Pettitte - I was worried that we wouldn't be able to put all the bullshit behind us, but Andy comes out just like we never lost a beat. The guys like a quality start machine.

6 Wang - Comes out after a horrible postseason, (I don't blame him for it, I don't think it makes him "not an ace" but it was horrible.) and starts the year beautifully. He is mixing all his pitches to great effect. Instead of relying on the sinker, he has his split, slider, change all working for him. His slider and change are about the same speed with very different breaks on them and will have batters lining up on the Macombs Dam Bridge screaming its not fair.

I psyched when we win, I'm frustrated when our pitcher gives us a quality start and we can't even make it a ballgame by scoring a run, I react badly to blown saves even though I know he's just a rookie. I hate heavy steroid ingested dead weight in the lineup. But one thing I am not is emotionally detached.

Screw you NoMaas I bet Brian Cashman thinks your blog is girly.

Rivera's new pitch

I heard the other day that Mariano has been working most of the spring trying to add (or re-add) a pitch to his arsenal. He has been working on a new change-up and I was wondering if anyone had heard anything more technical about it.

Here's what I do know:

Mariano used to have a great change-up that used to be his best pitch.

I believe when he threw it he was throwing a circle change.

He gave up that pitch when he started throwing his cut fastball. The rotation of his forearm was different enough so that it wasn't fooling anyone.

-------------------------------

I think that Mo has been looking at his own blown saves and asking himself what happened. Some batters around the league have seen that cutter enough that they have an idea of what to do with it.

I am surprised that Mariano is trying something so different for him after all this years after doing the same thing. After all, he is famous for being a mentor for the younger players. One of the things he is famous for telling them is not to make adjustments if the hitters aren't hitting you.

I find myself posting more and more, and two of my diaries were promoted to the main page! Thats all well and good, but I don't know how to do alot of things that the regulars do, and my posts look boring...

I would appreciate anything you could comment on, including, how do you insert pictures into your post? How do you make the gray box for extended quotes? Anaconda how do you insert the picture and writing on the same line?

Kei Igawa

Igawa had a kind of a rough outing yesterday in his start against the Braves.

To Kelly Johnson

Walked him on 5 pitches. The one strike was a uncomfortably high slider that I thought belonged over the center field wall.

To Edgar Rentaria

He was trying to pitch Rentaria inside because he is so good at hitting the ball the other way. Unfortunately he missed inside with two straight fastballs, and then deposited two balls in the dirt in front of Jorge to walk Rentaria on 4 pitches.

WALK

(At this point he has pitched one strike)

To Chipper Jones

He gave Chipper Jones another first pitch ball, missing high and outside. The next pitch was a strike but it looked to be another high slider, that I think Chipper would have swung at if he wasn't so surprised that Igawa actually threw a strike. He took a fastball right in the middle of the strikezone, followed by ANOTHER high slider for strike three.

To Andrew Jones

Started it off by giving him with two balls. Fastball right down the middle taken for a strike. Swing and a miss, strike two.
curveball in the dirt, Jones can't check his swing.

To Craig Wilson

Fastball for a strike
Swinging strike, breaking ball in the dirt
Wilson strikes out on ANOTHER breaking ball in the dirt.

Finished first inning, He walked the the leadoff batter and then second batter, and then struck out the next three. The look on Jones face was priceless, "Did he just throw a strike?" He doesn't ever seem to throw that curve of his for a strike, so I don't know how long he is going to be able to use it.

You guys get the idea. His strikeout numbers were high, but I don't know how. He wasn't making quality pitches, and he started off very rough not being able to find the strikezone. I am not going to go through pitch by pitch, but he walked another batter and got an extra strikeout, but was saved from giving up an extra base hit by Melky who made a diving/rolling/I don't even know catch.

Watching the beginning of the game, and I can't help but feel bad for the Twins. With the exception of Abreu, who is obviously not available, the A team is taking the field.

Alex looks great. He has lost alot of weight during the offseason, down to 9% body fat according to the announcers. Being in better shape can't do anything but help him get a good jump on the season.

They didn't mention it, but does it seem like Wang put on a good chunk of weight in the offseason? He is looking a bit thicker around the midsection than I remember.

Damon started off spring training the right way, homering on his first at bat.

I am just glad I can turn on the TV and watch baseball again
