I’m now a retired Navy engineer living in the Philippines. I’ve been a Caps fan since day one in 1974, yes the bad old days ( Actually it wasn’t all bad-8 bucks for the cheap seats up high and $2.50 I think for a large Busch and $3 for parking). It took about five or six years till I got to see them beat Philly for the first time at home and only the second in their history. I still have my #22 Ciccarelli (home/red) and #1 Peeters (away/white) game jerseys. I had the privilege of seeing Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita play although past their prime and the Great One when he was still in his. They say it wasn't a hockey town back then but I remember once when Billy Smith gave up a five hole shot from center ice the chants of "Billleee-Billieeee" shook the Centre for the rest of the game. I was there with my family early Easter morning in 1987 when Pat LaFontaine chipped one off the post and beat a beleaguered Bob Mason in the fourth overtime to knock them out of the playoffs yet again. I'll never forget Bob skating off the ice after that. Total devastation after giving everything he had for 6 hours. And it went on and on. Close and closer but still no cigar.
So as bad as things may seem, keep the faith brothers and sisters. Things could be worse (A LOT WORSE). Believe me. And you could be 8000 miles away from Verizon Center like I am!
