Adrian Cardenas just got DFA'd.
He came off the A's 40-man roster to make room for Jonny Gomes, no less. Someone tell me why this guy isn't as good as Wilson Valdez?
And that really is him playing piano.

Meanwhile back in Walt's Phoenix home office...
Uncle Walt is giving the Red what they need to rise from the ashes of 2011. Before addressing left field, he is determined to solidify the bullpen at the cost of starting pitching leftovers. Talks are on with the Cubs and apparently are very close in the midnight hours. Sean Marshall is the trade target in mind. Last year he served as a 8th inning guy to Marmal.
via www.blogcdn.com
Sean will be a free agent after the 2012 season, but could be reasonable to re-sign making a modest 3.1M in 2011. That's a quarter of Coco's salary last year and he will likely be just as good. That's much closer to a small market team's available payroll for a closer and this guy is in no way a bad player to want want on your team. I get that much.
But what Walt is willing to give up is what I don't get. Travis Wood, his six years of club control, and two prospects seems a tad high to get the deal done with a reliever. I could see this trade for Marmal or Marshall and Darwin Barney. But this shit is bananas. Unfortunately, division premiums usually make for weighted trades like this and are almost never worth the dismantling involved. (starts the over-reactor). Just like our last trade with the Padres, Walt is ready to make a move now at any cost that isn't green or on a MasterCard with the name Castellini on it.
One would hope the prospects would be blocked players like Denis Phipps or roster fillers like Daniel Dorn. Removing our roster waste kinda seems to be Walt's thing as of lately and I really hope he plans to make the most of it by filling it with star level talent from around the league. Walt seems to be making such dramatic moves because this team will be rebuilding in 3 years after Jo-eh leaves. I for one am glad we have a General Manager that can see this division is for the taking and Walt has the balls to take it from those South Milwaukee and those whinny little bitches.
The Reds have slightly less money to spend!
Looks like the Reds will have to pay rent for GABP due to the insufficient return on the stadium tax. This will total 2.2 Million dollars over the course of the next 5 years.
May I be the first to say, "THE RENT IS TOO DAMN HIGH!"
The Reds signed outfielder David Cook, according to Eddy (on Twitter). The 29-year-old has a .258/.369/.468 line in eight minor league seasons.
The Bats get better.
"From the Reds:
RHP Micah Owings, who on 8/16 was designated for assignment when the Reds signed No. 1 draft pick C Yasmani Grandal, cleared waivers and has accepted an outright assignment to Class AAA Louisville…Owings began the season with the Reds and went 3-2, 5.40 in 22 relief apps before he was optioned to Louisville on 7/21."

"The Reds have agreed to terms with Dominican shortstop Olivel Florentino for $250,000, pending the approval of Major League Baseball.
Florentino was not among the 40 Dominican players who had to register with MLB prior to July 2, so his contract will not become official until MLB completes its investigation into his age and identity. Florentino, who at 16 is 6-foot-1, 155 pounds, is an offensive-oriented righthanded hitter."

CINCINNATI Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips spent Thursday morning in Family Court battling one of his baby mamas, a local woman with whom he has a 4-year-old daughter. He has another child with a woman in Buffalo. Phillips, who was selected as a reserve in tomorrow's MLB All-Star Game, and Danielle Daluisio had a casual relationship in 2006 that resulted in a daughter, Micole Malia Phillips. Phillips has seen the child a total of five days in four years according to Daluisio's lawyer, Lynne Gold-Bikin, chairwoman of Weber Gallagher's family-law division. Thursday's hearing set dates in August for a child-support hearing and November for a custody hearing.
Daluisio, who receives $5,000 per month from Phillips for the child, is seeking a significant increase in child support from the baller, who signed a 4-year, $27 million contract with the Reds in 2008. Daluisio, 27, who works in school administration and has an internship with the NCAA, has primary custody of the child and seeks to establish more strict visitation conditions for Phillips, 29, such as preventing him from exposing the child to other women, according to Gold-Bikin. An attorney for Phillips declined to comment on the situation, and a Reds spokesman did not get back to us.

-Seth Blair on playing with Mike Leake at ASU -
"It's given me all the confidence in the world," Blair said. "It really has. To see Mike go out and do what he's done, it's just been amazing. I've been really close to him. I've stayed in touch with him throughout the season so far. And to see what he's done, it hasn't surprised me because he's definitely a great player. He knows how to pitch, and he's taught me a lot of different things that have helped me succeed this year as a pitcher for Arizona state, and hopefully he's going to teach me a little more this offseason."

Two very awkward segways into a mediocre segment. Dusty and the little slugger experiment with some ballpark favorites.
Terrell Young Struggles to make Resurgence
Twenty-four year old RHP Terrell Young was relinquiched into the Red's organization once more on October 27th, 2009 from the Washington Nationals. The initial transaction occurred when the Reds left him unprotected to a Rule 5 Draft in 2008, at which time Washington promptly offered him a one year contract. The likely cause for the Nationals change of heart is centered around shoulder inflammation issues from the 09 pre-season. In fact from my search, it seems he played a few innings of exhibition baseball for the Nats before being injured.
PEJ/PES game goes 24-15
Alonso got his 8th ejection after losing any BA he might have earned this month, whilst securing Votto at first-base. Boxenburger is looking more and more likely to be the 1/10 that doesn't make it into MLB after the Future Stars game.
Roster ch ch ch ch ch-anges
The Red today announced some minor roster changes. With an overstaffed Center-Field position, we knew someone had to go.
Mike Leake (1.04, 2 BB, 6 SO) is doing well in the Arizona Fall League, Trailing is this year's First Round Draft Prick. (6.97, 4 BB, 11 SO)
Did anyone else notice that we drafted a Matt Valaika this year? I don't know if he got signed, but It's not just the name that interests me. He grew up and when to college at the same place Chris did.
Bret and Aaron, I know. You guys probably knew this already.
