Does Free Agent Spending Work?
After looking at DDC's post extolling the supposed virtues of spending money, I started wondering about the relationship between spending money on free agents and improving as a team (if such a relationship actually exists). I've long thought that spending money on free agents is overrated, or at least spending money for spending's sake. But does the data actually support that?
One of the interesting things about Andy Sutton's disciplinary hearing? It was entered into evidence that Gabriel Landeskog suffered a broken nose. The rookie hasn't missed any games and blamed himself for keeping his head down, but I don't think Sutton was very happy. I had no problem with the suspension, though, because Sutton's history mattered much more than the injury.

Interesting Statistical Look at Defensive Forwards
According to this analysis, Jay McClement is among the best defensive forwards in the league.
Hishon among first cuts at WJC Camp.
Too bad. Pickard and Barrie survived the first round and are still in contention.
Could the Avs get Marc Staal?
ESPN.com is reporting that Marc Staal and the Rangers have "a chasm" between them in terms of Staal's contract negotiations. He'd look awfully good in an Avs uniform if the Rangers are forced to trade him.
He's a big body (6'4", 209 lbs) that logs big minutes (averaged 23+ minutes a game last year) against the other team's top line, and hasn't missed a game in two years. Don't forget that he's only 23 and is arguably already one of the best shutdown defensemen in the East.
Thoughts? I'd rather see the Avs put together a package for him than a Versteeg or Sharp.
Looking Towards June: The 2010 Draft
If you're anything like me, you're just about ready to think up crackpot draft ideas for the Avs now that their season is in the books.
As it stands right now, the Avs will be picking 19th in the first round, but could move up as many as two spots, depending on how many teams below them (Boston, Montreal, and Philadelphia) reach the Conference Finals. They also have an extra fifth round pick (sent from Los Angeles as part of the Quincey trade) and are without a sixth round pick (sent to Carolina as part of the Yelle trade).
What direction would you like the Avs to take in the draft? Are there any draft day trades you'd like to see?
