Hawks Interested in Boone, Elson and Skinner
This comes from Michael Cunningham of the AJC.
I would have liked to see the Hawks land Kwame Brown (seriously). Out of the three being discussed now, I prefer Josh Boone. What say you?
Confirmed: Al Horford will play more power forward.
This report comes from Fox Sports En Espanol. In the Google translation of the story, Larry Drew's first name somehow turned into "Mike." The main point is that it's clear it's being communicated to Al that he will be playing the position that he's been playing most of his life. My questions are:
Will he continue to start at center? If not, what do you all think about Zaza or Josh Powell starting at center?
How will this effect the rest of the lineup? Josh Smith at SF? Marvin Williams to the bench?
A Little Humor
When looking through my old basketball cards this morning, I found this gem.
There hasn't been much exciting news in the Hawks universe recently, so let's all share a giggle today. For all of the talk of the Hawks needing a big man, I think the team is in infinitely better shape with Al holding it down than the team was in the JK era.
When reading the back of the cards for underwhelming players, it's always funny to read how the writers have to stretch to write about the positives in the player's career. In this case there's the classic, "Led Hawks in shooting percentage in 1990." Yeah, but he averaged 3.7 ppg! (and 5.8 over his career). I would say the return on that investment was quite poor.
Hawks Close To Signing Josh Powell
According to a tweet from David Aldridge, the Hawks are close to inking Lakers free agent Josh Powell. The deal is said to be for the veteran minimum ($992k).

Count your blessings.
The ups and downs of being a fan of a team is something that should be expected and ultimately embraced. We all want to see our team win and make the moves that we deem successful and that are in the best interest of the team. But let's not kid ourselves, things could be worse.
Would you want to be a Cavaliers fan right now? Your star player stayed with you without much back-and-forth drama.
Would you want to be a Pistons fan right now ... unsure if your favorite team will remain in the city you love?
This summer has included:
- A 7-game first round playoff series that shouldn't have gone that long.
- Joe Johnson calling out the home town fans and then taking the big money to remain in the city with those fans. Who can blame him for taking the money though, right?
- A total thrashing in the second round by the hands of the Magic.
- Rumors of the franchise being for sale, though we found out the principals are simply looking for minority investors.
- The selling of draft picks that most fans believe could've been used for developing young depth at the bigs and the drafting of Pape Sy, who is obviously more of a guard who's simply tall for his position.
- The trading of Josh Childress for a second rounder and a trade exception.
With all that said, there are things to be happy (or satisfied) about.
More after the jump...
Source Says Houston Interested in Johnson
The Houston Chronicle's Jonathan Feigen writes that a source close to the Rockets front office mentioned Joe Johnson as a potential target via sign-and-trade with the Hawks. The rumored proposal would most likely involve SG Kevin Martin coming to the Hawks.
Too Much Focus on Guard Play
What's keeping the Hawks from drafting players taller than 6'10" who are worth holding down a spot in NBA rotations? Acquiring a true center project to develop would have been a nice move for the Hawks.
Zaza Pachulia, who I highly doubt is 26 years old, saw his minutes and production fall off this past season. A center that only shoots at a 48% clip is not a good fit for a system that employs high usage guards.
Winning teams recognize the importance of size. It doesn't matter if you run the triangle, the Princeton system, a heavy-screening / movement offense or isolation ball, you cannot win a championship without at least two truly serviceable big men of 6'10" or taller. Orlando is secure at center with Dwight Howard and Marcin Gortat, and they still drafted Daniel Orton. In the playoffs, it's more important to be deep at the four or five than anywhere else.
