Dear Ursula
I keep trying to climb down off the Vontaze Burflict Bandwagon. I have attended MABB meetings (Mothers Against Bad Burflict) and enrolled in the 12-step program. I have even tried pretending to be Burflict and scored me a 9 on the Wonderlic test as reinforcement. Then I watch this.
And no matter what my logical mind says - my visceral side still wins. I want him as a Raven!!
Please help.
Yours truly,
Fandemonium
A Look at the Ravens 2012 Salary Cap
Here’s a look at the Baltimore Ravens Salary Cap for 2012. Unfortunately I don’t know how to insert a table or I would give you the current salaries of each player under contract. I have pulled this salary information from several sources, so while I can’t be sure it is exactly accurate, I think it is pretty darn close.
2011 Roster: My list includes 53 players who were under contract with the Ravens in 2011 with a total Salary Cap number of $119,781,963. The cap number for 2011 was $120M.
2012 Roster: The Salary Cap for 2012 has not yet been set, but the rumor is that it will not change substantially from 2011, so we’ll work with a $125M Salary Cap for now in trying to set the roster.
The Ravens have 32 players under contract for 2012 with a Cap Number of $105,071,286. This includes Dominique Foxworth’s cap number of $8.3M. Assuming Foxworth gets released (a pretty fair assumption), you lose his salary but take a onetime hit for his remaining bonus money of $2.7M, therefore the savings is $5.6M. So we start with 31 players at $99,471,286.

The Next Ravens Offensive Coordinator
According to my anonymous source who prefers to remain nameless (cough … vlad755) the odds on Cam remaining OC next year are looking slim. To quote this very reliable but unnamed (Jeff aka vlad) source,
I asked several folks "in the know" that if the Ravens win the Super Bowl, does Cam stay? It seems to be breaking 50-50 opinion that Cam keeps his job. For the ones in the Cam is Gone Camp No Matter What, mostly they say that the Ravens have/will have invested too much money in Flacco, and that they can get any OC to perform at least as well as Cam, so there is not much risk and if they happen to hire someone who maybe can get to Flacco (hint hint Jim Zorn), they honestly believe the sky is the limit with Joe. So in their minds: jettisoning a Super Bowl winning OC carries little risk vs. the potential reward.
Given this insider information, and the almost universal opinion amongst Ravens fans that Cam Cameron needs to go, I started wondering who would be the potential candidates to replace him. Scouring the internet for "top NFL Offensive Coordinator candidates", the returns were less than satisfying. But after some exhausting research (Ok – maybe an hour) I did come up with five intriguing possibilities.

2012 NFL Draft – Ravens Watch List
• Guard (assumes we lose Grubbs)
• Center (Birk retires & Gurode leaves)
• ILB (Ray retires with two rings)
• OT (McKinnie replacement for 2013)
• Safety
What is Ray Rice Worth?
Ray Rice (4 yr/$2,805,000)
Ben Grubbs (5 yr/$8,000,000)
Andre Gurode (1 yr/$3,000,000)
Lardarius Webb (3 yr/$1,714,500)
Jarrett Johnson (5 yr/$21,700,000)
Matt Birk (3 yr/$12,000,000)
I have listed them in my order of signing priority considering current team depth at the positions. I don’t think I will get much argument on Ray Rice being the #1 target. After that, I give O-line the nod by putting Grubbs #2 as a key anchor. I ranked Gurode next (over Birk for age reasons) and I put Webb over Johnson because skill positions are a priority over LB where we have more depth.
So let’s focus first on Ray Rice. What is he worth?

Steelers Wrong On Chop Block Rule
But the Steelers, and folks like ESPN’s Merril Hoge, apparently don’t understand the chop block rule. An illegal chop block doesn’t occur when, for example, the center engages the nose tackle and one or both of the guards block him low. Instead, an illegal chop block happens only when the offensive lineman delivering the low block was originally lined up more than one position away from the offensive lineman who initially has engaged the defender. Here’s the official rule, which a league source has forwarded to PFT: "On a running play, A1, an offensive lineman, chops a defensive player after the defensive player has been engaged by A2 (high or low), and the initial alignment of A2 is more than one position away from A1. The rule applies only when the block occurs at a time when the flow of the play is clearly away from A1." And so, if the center hits a guy high and a tackle hits him low, it’s a penalty. When it’s a center and one of the two guards, the chop block is not illegal.Since Hampton was engaged by Birk at Center, and Yanda is one position away at RG, it is not an illegal chop block. Or maybe Hampton thought Yanda was still playing RT. In any event, what Hampton should be worried about is getting pancaked by Birk on Rice's TD run.

A truly controversial topic
What do you think of the new Maryland Terps uniforms debuted Monday night vs. Miami? I was surprised by all the negative press the new look generated.
Andy Staples of Sports Illustrated: “Maryland committed several unspeakable crimes against fashion."
LeBron James: "OH GOSH! Maryland uniforms #Ewwwww!"
ESPN's Pat Forde: “Of course they scored. Miami's eyes scorched out of their heads by Terps uniforms. Brilliant move by Kevin Plank."
Bill Walton: "Abercrombie is paying the Jersey Shore cast to NOT wear AF clothing. I hope someone pays Maryland to never wear these horrid uniforms again."
Personally, I liked them – a bold and unique look. And it didn’t hurt that the Terps crushed the ‘Canes in them.
Seems like there is no middle ground on this one, you either love them or hate them. What do you think?
Name that QB! or What veteran QB will the Ravens sign?
Where do Evans and Boldin rank among receiving duos?
Dallas (Miles Austin and Dez Bryant), New York (Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham), Philadelphia (DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin), New England (Chad Ochocinco and Wes Welker) and Houston (Andre Johnson and whoever else you throw out there) have strong tandems. Atlanta will have a very good one if rookie Julio Jones lives up to his draft position (sixth overall) playing next to Roddy White. You can make arguments for Green Bay and Indianapolis, too, though they have strength in numbers more so than they have top-end talent outside of Greg Jennings and Reggie Wayne, respectively.I would love to hear the thoughts of this astute group on the topic. How do you think our WR stack up? The best in our Division? Amongst the best in the NFL?
Pick the Upset - Week 6
Any given Sunday. That's the mantra of the NFL. Each week at least one team pulls off the improbable upset and ruins just about everyone's Pick 'em pool. So who's it going to be this week?
Ravens - Patriots stats
The stats are almost identical in terms of how both the Ravens and Patriots attack on offense. Both employ a fairly balanced run/pass mix, and can rely on either the run or pass from week to week depending on the opponent. But NE takes better advantage of turning their yards per game into points, although their scoring average is boosted by 2 defensive TDs and 3 Special Teams TDs. Take these away and the offense has accounted for 24 points per game, or about a TD more per game than the Ravens.

Housh - All is forgiven
Wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh said he regets comments he made last week about his role in the Ravens' offense.
"I want to play and win and that's it," he said after Sunday's 31-17 win over the Denver Broncos. "I said a lot of stuff and I think it came out the wrong way. I just say it the wrong way. It's just dumb. I want to contribute to the win. It doesn't matter if you win. I haven't said that, but that's how I feel."
He added, "You want to win games.. Look in this locker room everybody is happy. That's why we play to win and have success. If you win everything else will come with it. Whatever else you want, it will come with it."
Now you're talking like a Raven. Hoooouuuuush!
Josh Wilson to Return Kicks Sunday
Item from Ken Murray in today's Sun:
On Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium, former Maryland star Josh Wilson will get his first chance to return kicks for the Ravens.
The 5-foot-9 cornerback has played sparingly since a September trade with Seattle brought him to Baltimore, and was inactive last Sunday in Pittsburgh. Wilson had 10 kick returns of at least 40 yards in three years for the Seahawks, including an 89-yard touchdown.
Wilson declined to confirm he would return kicks this week, but he is eager for the chance.
"I can tell you right now, I'm ready, I know how to play football," he said. "I'm a football player. When I get the opportunity to show that, it'll be evident."
Which Team Will Get Their First Win?
Four teams have yet to win their first game of the 2010 season. The Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions, SF 49ers and Carolina Panthers are staging a fierce battle for the title of Worst Team in the NFL and the #1 draft pick in 2011. At this point, who do you think is the worst team in the NFL this year? Is this the week one of these teams will fall from the ranks of the winless? Which team do you predict will get their first win of the season this week?
Pick the Upset - Week 5
Any given Sunday. That's the mantra of the NFL. Each week at least one team pulls off the improbable upset and ruins just about everyone's Pick 'em pool. So who's it going to be this week?
There are six games this week with long odds of 6.5 to 7.5 points. The Ravens make the list for the first time as 7 point favorites at home against Denver. The only undefeated team in the NFL (Chiefs) is this week's biggest dog getting 7.5 points at Indy. Two of the teams are big favorites as visitors.
Who will be this week's biggest spoiler?
Just How Big It Is To Be 3-1
An NFL season, like a game, can be divided into quarters. After the first quarter of the Ravens’ season, we are looking pretty good at 3-1. But when you look even closer, our start is even more impressive than even the 3-1 record would indicate.
Pick the Upset – Week 4
Any given Sunday. That's the mantra of the NFL. Each week at least one team pulls off the improbable upset and ruins just about everyone's Pick 'em pool. So who's it going to be this week?
Looks like a good week for upsets. There are an incredible eight out of fourteen games with long odds of at least 5.5 points. And six games with 7 or more points. But only two teams are big favorites as visitors. Who will be this week's biggest spoiler?
The most worrisome statistic
There are many negative trends we have seen through the Baltimore Ravens first three games of the 2K10 season that are cause for concern. Ample scrutiny has focused on QB Joe Flacco’s performance; the second guessing of OC Cam Cameron’s play calling for not running the ball enough; the gnashing of teeth over the lack of pass rush; and amazement at our suddenly run vulnerable defense. But the stat that has me most worried is the turnover ratio. Zero interceptions and one forced fumble while coughing up 5 INT and 2 fumbles for a (-6) turnover ratio. Frankly, it’s amazing to be 2-1 with that negative differential.
Pick the Upset
Any given Sunday. That's the mantra of the NFL. Each week at least one team pulls the improbable upset and ruins just about everyone's pick 'em pool. So who's it going to be this week?
I'll leave it to Bruce to have the predictions thread, but here you can show-off your psychic abilities to pick against the odds. Nine teams are favored by at least 5 points - a margin that would clearly define an upset if the underdog wins. Which will be this week's spoiler?
Waiver Transactions - An Indication of poor drafting?
There were 29 players cut by their original teams Saturday who were then signed by 15 teams yesterday. A single waiver pick-up by a team is understandable, as was the case of the Ravens where injuries had created a depth issue at the Cornerback position. But what does it say about a team that needs to make multiple waiver claims after setting their roster with the players they had drafted?
Is this a sign of a poor front office evaluating talent and filling their needs in the draft?
Does this spell trouble for the upcoming season due to lack of quality depth?
How other teams make their 53 man roster
As we were sweating out the final cuts along with the bubble players, and trying to guess the makeup of the final 53 man roster, I started wondering "What does the typical roster in the NFL look like?" I assumed it would be pretty standard with 25 offense, 25 defense and 3 ST plus or minus 1 between O and D. So with the final cuts being announced yesterday, I took a look at the final rosters of 10 teams (our Division and selected others) to see how the roster compositions compared.

Walk the Talk
Walking to the Orioles game Thursday night (had to get my Nick Markakis bobble to complete the outfield set) I came down Ravens Walk and noticed the flags were up with this year's slogan "Walk the Talk". I think that's pretty appropriate for the 2K10 season. We're getting national accolades and predictions for a Super Bowl. But we're a team (and a city) that is not used to getting so much love. We prefer being the underdog out to prove that we are better than what the media and out of towners think. So now that the talk is filled with high expectations, the Ravens do indeed need to Walk the Talk this year.
Does it concern you that the Ravens might start believing all the hype setting themselves up for a big downfall? Or do you think the added media attention will drive them to focus on reaching their goal?
Would you rather have the Ravens running from the front? Or do you think it's better for them to be overlooked and have a "chip on their shoulder" and an attitude of the Ravens Against the World?
Tom Zbikowski
Great article in the Sun today on Tom Zbikowski. Gives you great confidence in his ability to fill in for Ed Reed while he recoups from his injuries. Some quotes from the article about his offseason training at the Turner Pain and Wellness Center in Naperville, Ill:
Turner put Zbikowski through an exotic routine of plyometrics and functional sport- and position-specific exercises. Turner said Zbikowski increased his vertical jump by nearly 8 inches.
"Before, he couldn't touch the rim," Turner said. "Now he can dunk."Zbikowski also wanted to strengthen his neck and improve his durability in case he gets to return punts this season. He added 21/2 inches to his neck, Turner said.
I mean Holy Crap! This is a man who truly understands what it takes to get to the next level in the NFL. I can't wait to see the results on the field this year.
Ravens 2010 Rookies Autograph Signing
Gaither a no show at Day 2 Minicamp
Aaron Wilson of National Football Post reports that Gaither is not on the field at all for the start of day two minicamp. Looks like the deal is going down today. Curious to see what we get - draft picks in 2011 or a player? Jarius Byrd? Now that’s dreaming but would be a nice pickup if the concern about Reed's hip surgery is more than the Ravens are saying in public. Leodis McKelvin? Also seems hardly plausible but would sure solve the DB dilemma. A two and a four in 2011? Better be at least that. Stay tuned!
Grade all the drafts
They say you can't truly grade a draft for 3 years, so here's your chance to grade all prior Ravens drafts.

Which Draft Pick Will Not Make the Team?
In the history of the Ravens, there has never been a draft where every draft pick has made the team. I know we bow to the Power of Oz as if he is perfect, but even God makes mistakes (I mean mosquitoes - really?). So with that in mind, tell us which 2010 draft pick will not make the Ravens opening day roster. For this poll, you "make the roster" if you are:
- on the official Ravens 53 man opening day roster (no - really)
- on PUP/IR list (for Kindle's sake)
- on the Practice Squad (rooting for you Ramon!)
Vote below - then 'splain yourself!
