The Good Phight A Brief Rant

Why am I writing this? I don't know. Maybe it's the eight half-gallon Cokes I downed a few hours ago to the tune of weak pop-ups courtesy Matt Cain, or maybe it's the profound feeling of minimality that washes over me when faced with the monstrosity that is the internet and the desire to make my voice heard above the fray. Or maybe it's because I've been listening to Minor Threat for the past hour or so and feel the need to direct all that rage SOMEWHERE. Whatever; it's unimportant. What is important is after the jump.

Oh. Interesting. Zolecki speculates perhaps they want to keep getting him innings to keep him sharp since both Blanton and Oswalt seem to be on the fritz injury-wise.

Testudo Times Is Mark Turgeon about to land his first recruit at Maryland?

Via The Post. Seth Allen, a 6-1 guard from Fredericksburg Christian (wherever THAT is; Virginia, I think), will be on campus Saturday with his family. The Turg apparently had offered him while still at A&M, and is expected to do so again. To me, he seems similar to Stogs: quick guards who average a high number of points per game but against somewhat "questionable" competition. Maybe. I don't know much about who his (Allen, that is) high school plays. Anyway, really looks like Turgeon is hitting the ground running when it comes to recruiting. Thoughts?

The Good Phight Sabermetrics books

Being as that I just got a job which gives me a lot of down time (working a desk from 2-8 AM on Mondays and Wednesdays will do that) and being as there is only so much studying I can do and being as I am always in the market for a new book and being as I want to learn more about sabermetrics and being as I've now just said "being as" five times in one sentence, what are the best sabermetrics books out there? Which is the best (and thus, which should I buy)?. I figured asking here would be easier and more direct than googling it. I appreciate any and all responses, even from Braves fans (well, maybe).

Matt Gelb of the Inquirer examines the decrease in expectations for Dominic Brown over the course of the offseason. He makes a good point. Brown's perceived value has gone down without him actually doing anything. Though I do believe Gelb ignores the fact that expectations may have been a little too high to begin with, his point that Dom Brown is still the same player he was back in September and that his performance in his 47 or so at-bats should do nothing to change that is a valid one.

The Good Phight Phillie Killers: The Search for Truth in a World of Perception

NOTE: Promoted from FanPosts, really enjoyed this. - WC

Someone brought up the idea for this post in a game thread way back in April, I think, and seeing as I have a lot of time on my hands right now, I figured I would take a look at the numbers. I compiled a list of all perceived Phillie killers that I could think of in order to determine who is a killer and who is a law abiding citizen (lame I know, but I needed a clever antonym for killer, and that was the only one I could think of). I defined a Phillie killer as a player who hits significantly better against the Phils than his career overall numbers. The first set of numbers is AVG/OBP/SLG, all against the Philles. The second set is career overall numbers, in the same order. In some cases, the numbers are based on relatively small sample size (Diaz, Barajas, Lugo). If I've left anyone out, feel free to point it out, as well as give your opinions on anything.
