Muhammad might be worth taking a chance on for a couple of years--he seems to fit what the Jazz are trying to do age and experience-wise, and he is kind of the converse of Carrick Felix in skillset (all shooting, no defense).

Martin: 3 years at about $7 mil. per year; Brewer and Budinger: each two years at about $5 mil. per year; Shabazz Muhammad is on his rookie contract at about $2-3 mil. per year, with a team option for years 2 and 3; and Hummel: 1 year $.88 mil.

He's most likely going to retire. The Jazz might be able to get him to sign if they give him a one-year deal at $2.5 to $3 mil.--which is kind of expensive for what essentially would be another assistant coach.

That's true, so the Cleveland/Minnesota deal won't get done for another month.

Eric Maynor is probably available on a veteran minimum, one-year deal. He knows how to run a team. He basically is the same player as Trey Burke, without all the hype. Would the Jazz want Maynor as their 3rd point guard?

Both of those men (JL3 and Tyrone Corbin) sacrificed their own career best interests for the greater good--all while becoming millionaires.

Thank you JL3--Jazz tank commander and "playmaker" extraordinaire--for giving us Jazz fans Dante Exum. Also, thank you Tyrone Corbin--for the same thing.

The Jazz could also use an upgrade over Clark and Felix at the shooting guard position, and a third string point guard. It will be interesting to see what the Jazz do to fill out their roster.
Commented on Free Agency 2014: Utah Jazz roster almost all filled up, what's missing? on Jul 25 2014, 12:19p
Despite the fact that everyone has pronounced that the Jazz have too many bigs, I think the Jazz need one more big--a 3rd string center.
Commented on Free Agency 2014: Utah Jazz roster almost all filled up, what's missing? on Jul 25 2014, 12:15p
To the consternation of many Jazz fans, Kelly Dwyer dissed Trey Burke last year by calling him "Utah's mindful backup point guard of the future." Those words are looking more and more prophetic, with Dante Exum's selection by the Jazz.

They are shooting guards, so they should be chuckers. JL3 was masquerading as a point guard when he was really an extremely undersized shooting guard--and not a very good one.

Most likely Jason Richardson or Jason Terry, because they are both recovering from injuries and only have one year left on their contracts (Terry at $5.4 mil. and Richardson at $6.6 mi.), and couldn't expect to play much, except in an emergency.

I suspected that the Jazz were keeping the non-guaranteed guys around for a trade, but was thrown off when the Jazz put the misinformation out there that they were keeping JL3 for his "veteran presence."

Being able to score in the post is a very valuable commodity in the NBA--and there are only 6-8 players in the whole NBA (if that many) who can do it well. If Kanter becomes one of those guys, he will be very valuable.

Dennis Lindsey is basically the Jazz front office. Every time I've heard LIndsey mention Kanter, he has always said positive things. And, he has poo-pooed the idea that Kanter and Favors can't play together.

Maybe the Jazz could hold an open tryout in SLC to see if they can find JL3's replacement off the street. It might be a good PR move, and the Jazz would probably find someone who is actually better than JL3 (like about half of the players in SL).
Commented on The Velour Edition - The Downbeat - #1409 on Jul 19 2014, 1:39a - 1 reply
Even if he can't play, he can be a great locker room guy--he's not just any veteran. He led his team to the finals about 5 times, and has been an all-star. What has JL3 done to gain valuable knowledge that he can impart to the young guys?
Commented on The Velour Edition - The Downbeat - #1409 on Jul 19 2014, 1:23a
It looks like the Jazz are going to showcase Burke this year while Exum gets his "NBA legs." Then after the Jazz trade Burke, they will bring Neto over to be Dante's backup--because he has just about the same game as Burke, but doesn't expect to start.
Commented on The Velour Edition - The Downbeat - #1409 on Jul 19 2014, 1:17a
The Jazz had a need for a more conventional, backup power forward, and Booker meets the criteria. His weakness is that he is undersized. Otherwise, he would probably be a solid starter at PF with his overall talent level, motor and toughness.
Commented on NBA Free Agency 2014: Utah Jazz sign bigman Trevor Booker on Jul 15 2014, 6:29p
The most likely result of having to sign Hayward for the max, instead of between $13-14 mil. is that Hayward may have just signed the deathnell with the Jazz for his good buddy Jeremy Evans.
Commented on Who Keeps Making This Stupid Mistake? Lindsey, O'Connor, the Miller's? on Jul 14 2014, 12:02p
Also, I think the Jazz could have signed Hayward prior to the season without the 15% trade kicker and without the 4th year opt-out clause, which don't help the Jazz.

I agree 100%. The people in the Jazz office get paid to know what the RFA market will be, and they totally botched the Hayward signing--paying more by about $2 mil. per year over what they could have signed him for last fall.

Tyrone Corbin was absolutely the worst choice for coach of a young team of developing players. However, he was a very good choice for coach of a team who wanted to tank.

I don't know quite what to think about JL3. It seems absurd to me that DL is keeping him on the team for one more year (at a salary of $1.6 mil.) just as a favor for his father, John Lucas--but what other conclusion can we come to.

Does anyone think Evan Turner might be able to fill Gordon Hayward's shoes? He could be an option, if the Jazz don't want to overpay an overhyped Hayward.

Commented on NBA Free Agency 2014 Rumors: Gordon Hayward may be getting large offer from the Cleveland Cavaliers on Jul 2 2014, 11:04p
Yeah. The Jazz have no room for another "young player" they could have had with #35 in the draft, such as Jerami Grant or Glenn Robinson III, but they have room for a "stiff" like JL3.
Commented on NBA Free Agency 2014 Rumors: Gordon Hayward may be getting large offer from the Cleveland Cavaliers on Jul 2 2014, 10:55p
Live and learn. I'd say the front office botched the Hayward signing. He performed poorly this past season and is still getting a max offer. The front office is paid to forcast that type of thing.

Frankly, I thought the Jazz were keeping him around prior to the draft just in case they needed his non-guaranteed salary to use in a potential trade.

There is definitely something wierd going on with JL3. I think he would have a hard time making many D-league rosters. He adds absolutely nothing to the Jazz, and is just an absolute waste of a roster spot and salary.

You forgot the most important priority: Guarantee the second year of JL3's $1.6 mil. per year contract (because we clearly don't have a spot for a third rookie on the team at $.8 mil. per year or thereabouts).

I'm not sure why, but it is just painful for me to have to watch JL3 play for the Jazz. It reminds me of the not so recent past when Jerry Sloan insisted on playing Jaron Collins--"stiff" extraordinare--at the expense of much better players.

The Jazz should announce they will match any offer for Hayward. That may put the Jazz in the situation Minnesota was in with Pekovic, where Pekovic got no other offers and the Wolves were able to sign him a contract that was somewhat undervalued.
