Evidently he was hurt in Monday's game at Cleveland, perhaps flailing helplessly at a Cliff Lee offering.

Yahoo's Jeff Passan, in the above link, discusses why none of the other AL Cy Young Award contenders are really contenders.

Paul Cousineau a/k/a the DiaTriber also revels in Clifton's statistical dominance, including an interesting review of his five no-decisions.

Bullpen moves not learned on Facebook — Jensen Lewis sent down, Ed Mujica and Scott Elarton brought up, and Julio left alone. Carmona was officially placed on the DL. A busy Saturday.

Elarton was added to the 40-man, bringing that total to 40. I confess I'd lost track of this; I thought Whoa Nelly Perez was #40, but the list prior to these moves only shows 39. (Perez did take the 40th spot at the time, but the team freed up a spot when Breslow was DFA'ed yesterday. —Jay)

Perez will be added to the 40-man and sent to Buffalo. He hasn't made his MLB debut, and I'll leave it to the MiLB and stat experts to size him up. Here's his stats. He'll turn 25 shortly after reporting at Dunn Tire Park.

EDIT: here's a link to Castrovince's story on the official website. I'm adding it only to satisfy completists, as it sheds no new light.

"Neshek, the Twins' eighth-inning setup specialist, will miss the rest of the 2008 season while he rehabilitates from a partial tear in an elbow ligament."

He will not have surgery and anticipates being ready for the full 2009 season.

[Rangers GM Jon] Daniels expects Broussard to land with another organization quickly even though the native Texan is hitting only .159.
Obviously he's keeping tabs on our lineup.

Let's Go Tribe Front Office News from Elsewhere

A couple of recent items of interest, and at least tangential connection to the Tribe, from the land of the NL East.

PHILADELPHIA--The Phillies extend Charlie Manuel's contract through 2009 (with a club option for 2010) and pledge to increase payroll beyond the $100 million threshold.

ATLANTA--John Schuerholz announces his retirement as Braves GM.  During his tenure the Braves won 14 NL East pennants, but only hoisted the championship trophy once--I need not remind you when.

Let's Go Tribe Comeback = Escape from Detroit

The Comeback Players of the Year have been named:  Washington National and former Tiger Dmitri Young, and Tampa Bay Devil Ray and former Tiger Carlos Pena.    Both players were awarded by the MLB.com corps of writers for their outstanding seasons, and perhaps also for their ability to put the nightmare that is playing for the Tigers behind them.

The articles don't mention how the voting went.  Presumably the NL award did not go to Josh Hamilton at least in part because he was not a major leaguer before this season (hence there was no "comeback.")  Fausto Carmona may have been thought of as an AL candidate, except that his "comeback" was really just from one bad week last year--he was pretty good to excellent in his non-closer outings last season, something that is easily forgotten.

Let's Go Tribe Wayne/Holmes/Tusky LGTers

I know there's at least several of us Amish Country LGTers out there, a fact that was brought out in today's game thread.  I wonder if anyone would like to get together at a common watering hole to watch a playoff game?  Depending on where participants are located, some choices might be The Olde Jaol (yay) or Buffalo Wild Wings (boo) in Wooster, or Bags in Millersburg (it's new).  I can't offer Dover/NP suggestions since I haven't been there since my college days (Mama Zifer's Pizza...mmmmm).

If you're from the Little Switzerland of Ohio and wanna get together, drop a note in here.
