4-run 5th Inning Propels Arizona Over Oregon St.
2 months from now, if the Beavers are on the bubble of the College World Series, they will look back at this weekend as a devastating one. It was a series that the Beavers could have swept. Saturday, they were a couple bad pitches and maybe some better bullpen management from a win. Sunday, it would've been a completely different game minus a crucial error.

The Beavers had a 2-0 lead after Ryan Dunn and Kavin Keyes, who reached on a double and a walk to start the inning, scored on two separate groundballs to shortstop. In the 4th, the Wildcats tied the game, partially thanks to Jace Fry, whose control overall improved today, starting off two straight batters with a 2-0 count. They both singled, and eventually scored.
Fry threw 4.2 innings today, which wasn't what Pat Casey said he had in mind in the pregame interview with Mike Parker, when Casey said he'd like Fry to go deep in the game. Over those 4.2 innings, Fry allowed 6 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits. He issued 4 walks, and recorded 5 strikeouts.
Oregon State reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the inning when Keyes scored on a wild pitch. Unfortunately, Fry and the Beavs fell apart in the 5th. Fry surrendered a leadoff double, and the freshmen lefty's throw on the ensuing bunt pulled Ryan Barnes off the first base bag. A swinging bunt tied the game, and a walk loaded the bases after that. Wildcat senior Seth Mejias-Brean drove in two with a single, giving Arizona a 2-run lead. Two outs and the second unearned run of the inning later, Matt Boyd was summoned in from the bullpen, and ended the inning.

Oregon St. vs. Arizona Series Finale Game Thread
#19 Oregon State (15-6, 4-1) vs. #5 Arizona (20-3, 3-2) - 1:05 PM PDT - Goss Stadium at Coleman Field, Corvallis, OR- KEJO 1240 AM & KPOJ 620 AM - Video and Audio Stream on Beaver Nation Online, for a fee
Oregon State lost Saturday, evening the series at 1 game apiece. Beaver starter Dan Child did well to limit the Wildcats to just 2 runs over his 6+ innings, despite surrendering 7 hits and 2 walks. Heading into the 7th inning, the Beavs were up 3-1, partially thanks to 2 Tyler Smith RBI's.
Flashback to Friday. Cole Brocker went .2 innings, surrendering the Beaver lead by giving up 2 runs on 3 hits. Saturday, Brocker entered with one out and the tying run on 2nd in the 8th inning. He promptly gave up a single into center, but then finished the inning with a hard-hit double play ball. He wasn't so lucky in the 9th. The leadoff hitter worked a 2-2 count before depositing Brocker's pitch over the fence in rightcenter, giving the Wildcats a 4-3 lead. One would think that three straight hard hit balls would warrant a new pitcher, but Brocker stayed in the game and surrendered another home run, and then a single before being replaced by Scott Schultz, who finished the inning.
The Beavers nearly fought back in the bottom of the 9th, having the tying run on 3rd with one out after Tyler Smith's 3rd RBI came on a sacrifice fly. Unfortunately, for what seems like the first game this season, neither Michael Conforto nor Dylan Davis could come through in the clutch.
The pitching breakdown squandered a defensive effort that produced a season high 4 double plays.

The Beavers look to secure what would be an impressive series win on Saturday, after beating the Wildcats in dramatic walkoff fashion 6-5 on Friday.
Oregon State was winning 3-1 after the first inning, and had a 5-1 lead heading into the 8th. However, Cole Brocker surrendered 2 runs in the 8th, and Tony Bryant, not to be outdone, did the same in the 9th, and Arizona had tied the game. But with 1 out in the bottom of the frame, Ryan Dunn hit a walkoff single, scoring Tyler Smith, who had reached base on an error.
Beaver Starter Ben Wetzler keeps pitching well, as he went 6.2 innings, while giving up 1 run on 4 hits.
The mighty freshmen Dylan Davis and Michael Conforto both had an RBI Friday, and the senior Dunn's walkoff was his 3rd hit of the day, and earned him his 2nd RBI.

The Beavers begin their 3-game series against the Wildcats on Friday, and Oregon State is up against a very good Arizona team. This series could be an early indicator to the Beavers' chances in the conference and beyond.
Last weekend, OSU stormed into Pac-12 play, sweeping the Golden Bears by scores of 9-2, 4-1, and 13-5. The Bears made some mistakes that helped the Beavers, but it was still an impressive series from OSU, and moved them up 6 spots in the top 25.
The Wildcats lost their first game against the WSU Cougars 6-0, but won the next two games 8-7 and 12-9. They also lost a pair of midweek games against New Mexico State 7-4 and 13-7.
Arizona relies on their offense, who have tallied up a .327 average on the year. Their pitching, however, is hittable, with a 3.97 ERA this year. Their defense has made a total of 33 errors, for an average of 1.5 per game. 4 of those errors came in the 7-4 loss against New Mexico, and the Wildcats ended up giving up 4 crucial unearned runs, fueling the Aggies late inning comeback.

Oklahoma 7
Sunday's finale of the Nike College Showcase had a combined 7 errors, good for 7 unearned runs. The game started terribly for the Beavers, as starting pitcher and cleanup hitter Dylan Davis couldn't get out of the first inning. He struck out the Sooner leadoff batter, but lost the strike zone after that, walking the bases loaded before being replaced by Scott Schultz. Davis stayed in the game as a DH. Schultz induced a groundball, but it was too deep in the 5-6 hole to turn a double play on, so it was just a run-scoring fielders choice. On the next Schultz offering, the runner on first broke, got in a rundown, and wasn't tagged out until the runner from 3rd scored.
The Beavers could've gotten some momentum back, but couldn't capitalize on Sooner mistakes. Tyler Smith hit a little spinner off the end of his bat, and the 2nd baseman couldn't field it cleanly. Michael Conforto singled, and a Davis flyball was dropped, a play that should've scored Smith from 2nd, but didn't, and a Ryan Dunn double play ball ended the inning.
Oregon State absolutely fell apart in the 2nd inning. It started with a leadoff single, which was followed by a bunt, which was popped up, but placed perfectly down the first base line. Schultz thought he could catch it with a dive, but instead knocked it just far enough away from himself to make his throw to first late. Had he stayed on his feet and played it on a bounce, he easily gets the out. Had he let it bounce, there was a chance it could bounce foul; but he did neither, and the Sooners were in business.

Game 1 - Beaver starter Dan Child dominated this one, working all the way into the 9th. He went 8 and 1/3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, while striking out 9 Illini batters, and walking just 2. It was nice to see Child do quite well after his somewhat rocky beginning to the season.
The Beaver bats got going in the 2nd. Ryan Dunn and Kavin Keyes were both hit by 2-strike pitches to lead off the inning. Illinois starter Matt Milroy walked or hit 6 out of the first 11 batters he faced. Jake Rodriguez bunted them over, and Danny Hayes walked to load the bases. Ryan Barnes singled home 2 runs, and a Max Gordon groundball to 2nd went as a fielders choice, giving the Beavs first and third with one out. Gordon moved to 2nd on an early steal, and a Smith walk and Conforto HBP forced in the 3rd run of the inning. Dylan Davis cleared the bases with a line drive double, that never got very far off the ground, but rolled all the way to the wall, giving the Beavs a 6-0 lead.

Beaver starter Ben Wetzler threw a complete game (albeit 7 inning) shutout yesterday, allowing just one hit. He walked one Mountaineer and struck out 7. The Beavers provided plenty of offense busting the game open with a 7-run 7th.
The Beavers added onto a 1-0 lead in the 5th, after Jake Rodriguez, who singled, advanced to third on two passed balls. Danny Hayes and Ryan Barnes walked, and Tyler Smith hit an RBI groundout to extend the Oregon State lead to 2-0. Michael Conforto drove in the remaining runners with a 2-out, 2-run double. Although the Beavs loaded the bases again, they failed to score.

The Beavers never trailed in the Surprise finale, and although the Huskies pulled to within 1, Oregon State answered with a 5-run 6th inning, putting the game out of reach.
The first inning set the tone for the rest of the game. The Beaver pitcher, Riley Wilkerson, breezed through the inning, while Tyler Smith, Michael Conforto, and Dylan Davis supplied the offense. Wilkerson went 4.1 innings, allowing 5 hits and 3 runs, striking out 4 while walking 1.
Smith, Conforto, and Davis went single, single, home run in the first inning, giving the Beavs a 3-0 lead. Davis went on to have an even better day than yesterday, going 4-4, collecting 9 total bases, scoring 3 times while driving in 4. On the series, he went 9-14 (.642), collecting 7 RBI's, scoring 6 runs, and earning 16 total bases. Without a doubt, he is your weekend MVP.
In the 3rd, Smith and Conforto hit a pair of singles once again. True freshman Conforto went 3-5, and scored 2 runs on Sunday. He didn't score in the 3rd, unfortunately, as he was picked off. However, with Smith on 3rd, Davis hit an infield single to extend the Beaver lead to 4-0.

Oregon State starter Cole Baylis didn't make it out of the first inning, walking 3 out of the first 4 batters, while recording just two outs. Starr walked the next batter, and the next Billiken batter hit a RBI single to give the Billikens a 1-0 lead. A wild pitch pushed another run across, and a SAC fly another. The Beavers jumped to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning, in which Ryan Dunn hit a 2-out double, and was driven in on a Jake Rodriguez single, as J-Rod continues to heat up. The Beavers added on in the 3rd, capitalizing on having 2nd and 3rd with nobody out after a John Tommasini walk and Ryan Barnes double, as Michael Conforto hit a sacrifice fly to center, giving the Beavs a 2-0 lead.

The Beavers lost a heartbreaker in the continuation of Saturday's nightcap; trailing by as much as 6, but clawing back and having the lead twice, only to lose in extras. Thankfully the final game of the series was better, the Beavers coming from behind to win 8-6.
Had the last run of game three been scored by the Beavers, it would've created an early candidate for game of the year; despite its early season sloppiness, and according to assistant coach Pat Bailey, terrible home plate umpiring. Unearned runs were a theme of the day, between the two teams, 10 were score, and 7 of those went on OSU starter Dan Child's line. Other than that, Child gave up just one run, while scattering 9 hits over 6 innings.
The Gaucho's started off the scoring in the 2nd, pushing across 3 unearned runs after a play in which 2nd basemen John Tommasini and Tyler Smith both made an error.
In the third, Jake Rodriguez caught yet another man stealing, adding to his up-and-down weekend. Although his .222 batting average isn't absolutely horrid when considering sample size, he struck out a crazy 9 times over 4 games, many of which were with RISP, when putting the ball in play is key. But, he still managed a respectable 3 RBI's. He also showed off his great arm, picking a man off second, and stopping many Gauchos from stealing a base. One can only figure (and hope) his offense will pick up, after he performed well last year, but was injured for a chunk of the season.

Who would be interested in a group BNO account? (BTW, I asked, and shared accounts are allowed.) It would probably be for the baseball season only, as every other major sport is easily streamed and/or televised. That means we'd do a monthly account ($9.95/month.) As for money, I don't really care, whatever anybody can offer is fine, even if it's nothing.

The third game of the series was suspended due to darkness yesterday. It will continue with the teams tied at 12, headed to the tenth inning. Tony Bryant was the last pitcher for the Beavers, and Jeremy Peterson the last for the Gauchos. There are no probables for game 4.
Before we go into the game 2 recap, let me say this: The Beavers strike out way too much, especially for a team without much power. They've struck out 34 times over 26 innings. If the batters don't learn to make contact, this season could go downhill.
Saturday's first game was an exciting 3-2 victory for the Beavers. Cole Baylis started for the Beavers, and went 4 innings, giving up 2 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits, striking out and walking one batter. UCSB sent Kevin Gelinas out to start the game, and he threw 5 innings, surrendering 2 runs (2 earned) and 2 hits, while striking out a whopping 8 Beavers, and walking three. (Remember, this was to be a 7-inning game.)
The Gaucho's started the scoring in the 3rd, which started with a John Tommasini throwing error, allowing the runner to reach second. Baylis and the Beavers almost got out of it, as the next two batters fouled out and grounded out. Unfortunately, Marc Venning hit an RBI single with two outs to make it a 1-0 affair.

Note: Game one will be a 7-inning game, followed by a 9-inning nightcap. Cole Baylis will start game one, and Dan Child will start game two. Both are sophomores.
The Beavers knocked off UCSB 7-3 on Friday afternoon, and performed as well as anyone could expect for the first game. Sophomore Ben Wetzler got the start and the win, going 5.1 innings, surrendering 3 earned runs on 6 hits, while recording one strikeout, walk, and hit batsmen. The Gaucho's starter, Matthew Vedo, took the loss on the day, giving up 5 runs (3 earned) over 4 innings, walking 6 batters while striking out 8.
The first inning of the season was a frustrating one for Oregon State. After a leadoff single by Ryan Barnes, the Beavers loaded the bases on back-to-back walks by Kavin Keyes and Ryan Dunn. Unfortunately, the Beavers couldn't score a run, as Jake Rodriguez, Sam Montgomery, and freshman Dylan Davis (New season, new names!) followed with two strike outs and a fly out.

#23 Oregon State (0-0, 0-0) @ UCSB (0-0, 0-0) - 2:00 PM (PST) - Santa Barbara, CA
The much-anticipated baseball season kicks off today, as Oregon State takes on the UCSB Gauchos in Santa Barbara. After the Friday matinee, the two teams will face off in a doubleheader Saturday, before closing the series on Sunday. Ben Wetzler gets the opening day start, but it's anybody's guess who will start on the mound for the Beavers the rest of the weekend. The best guess for the Gaucho's starter is senior Matt Vedo.
When these teams met last year, the Beavers won the series 2-1, OSU's lone loss coming in the series finale.
Last year, the Beavers played very well until the last few weeks, when the team fell apart, and saw the Pac-10 championship slip out of their hands. Finishing with a 41-19 record (17-10 in conference), the Beavers hosted a regional in Corvallis, which they easily won. But the Beavers were swept by Vanderbilt in the super-regional, ending an exciting season. Much of the 2011 Beaver squad is returning this year, but some key players such as Andrew Susac, Sam Gaviglio, Josh Osich, Brian Stamps, and Carter Bell will not. For a more in-depth look at the team, rvm posted his annual Baseball Preview on Tuesday.

Oregon State and UCLA meet at 2:00 PM west coast time today in the second game of a three game series between the Beavers and Bruins. After today's game, the two teams will meet again tomorrow for a 1:00 PM first pitch.
Oregon State comes into today's game with a record of 31-8. The Beavers have good wins against Connecticut, Arizona State (3), and Stanford (3). Oregon State has other solid victories against Gonzaga (2), Oregon, Long Beach State, and Arizona.
The Beavers are currently on a two game winning streak after defeating Portland, 6-1, on Tuesday afternoon, and beating UCLA 7-5 yesterday.
The Bruins come into the game with a record of 22-15. UCLA's good wins have came against San Francisco (3), Stanford, and UC Irvine.
In the first game of the series, neither team's starters were on their usual game. With a 5-run lead heading into the top of the fifth, but there the Beavers scored 6 runs, good enough for a 7-5 lead. Both teams bullpens held their ground, and the final score was 7-5 Beavers.

Beavers vs. Wildcats Series Preview
The Wildcats come into this series with a 19-7 overall record, 1-2 in Pac-10 play, good enough to be ranked 18th by Baseball America. Coming off of a 1-2 performance against the in-state rival Sun Devils, Arizona will surely be looking to bounce back against the visiting Beavers.
We'll start the preview with a look at the Wildcats' series against Long Beach State, the only mutual opponent between Oregon State and Arizona.
The Wildcats, like the Beavers, went 2-1 in Long Beach. They lost 2-1, and defeated the Dirtbags 9-1 and 7-1. In the first game, Arizona faced Long Beach State starter Andrew Gagnon. Andrew Gagnon is similar to Sam Gaviglio, although Gagnon is 3 inches taller than Gaviglio. Both weigh 195 lbs. The two right-handers won't overpower you with their fastball, Gaviglio topping out at 90, Gagnon in the 91 range. Another similarity between the two is an approximately 81 mph changeup. Because of all this, I think that Gagnon's performance will be a good predictor of Gaviglio's performance.
Beavers Split Doubleheader Against Long Beach State
What was originally scheduled to be a 3-game, 3 day series turned into a 3-game, 2 day series Saturday. There is expected to be rain on Sunday, when the third game of the series was supposed to be played, so the Dirtbags and Beavers decided to play a doubleheader Saturday.

Beavers starting pitcher, freshman Scott Schultz, went 4.1 innings while giving up a run on 4 hits, no walks, and two hit batsmen.
The Ducks sent Alex Keudell to the mound, who struggled getting ahead on hitters throughout his 4.1 innings of work. He also had trouble finishing hitters; out of the 10 men who Keudell walked or gave up a hit to, 5 were with 2 strikes against the batter. All in all, Keudell surrendered 4 runs to the Beavers, enough to get stuck with a loss for tonight's game.
By the time Beaver cleanup hitter Danny Hayes came up to bat in the first inning, Oregon State already had a lead, which they held onto for the rest of the game.. Garrett Nash lead off with a double, Max Gordon bunted him over, and Pac-10 Player of the Week Andrew Susac continued his great start with an RBI single.
In the third, Max Gordon worked the count full, and topped it off with a single. Susac followed with another single, and this time it was Danny Hayes bunting the runners over. Gordon scored on a wild pitch, and Ryan Dunn hit a dribbler to the shortstop that he was able to beat out, plating Susac. Just like that, the Beavers had a 3-0 lead heading into the fourth inning.

Box Score
Oregon State kicked off the baseball season against the Gonzaga Bulldogs in Fresno on Saturday, winning 4-3 in 11 innings. The Beavers played a solid game, although at times they were sloppy, but that was to be expected in the first game of the season.
Junior Sam Gaviglio started the game for the Beavs, and threw a very nice game, pitching 6.2 innings while only giving up 2 unearned runs, both in the first inning. The unearned runs were a result of an error by starting shortstop Kavin Keyes, who graduated a year early from his high school in Utah, and must have had some jitters, as he made another error in the 6th inning. Luckily that one didn't result in another run.
It didn't take long for the Beavers to get on the board for the first time, when second-team All-American Andrew Susac drove in Matt Stamps with a single. Susac, who will be leaned on heavily by this Beavers team, was 2-3 with two walks, a double and a sacrifice bunt. Stamps would also score the winning run, a few batters after he tripled with one out in the 11th inning. Stamps is very fast, and he also bunted for a single. Unfortunately, he struck out three times, and if he made some contact he might be able to make something happen with his speed.
