Do QB ratings really matter?
People often use QB ratings as a barometer as to whether a QB is good or not, but do they really matter? You can have the highest QB rating, but if you don't win the Big dance, so what? I wanted to see if there was a direct correlation between QB ratings and whether that meant you won the Super Bowl and I was surprised by the results.
Rather than list every Super Bowl, I went back the last 11 starting in 2000, which QB's played, who won or lost, and where those QB's ranked in the regular season for QB ratings in the league.
| SB | YEAR | Winning QB | Reg Season QB Rating |
Reg Season Rank |
Losing QB | Reg Season QB Rating |
Reg Season Rank |
| XLV | 2010 | Aaron Rodgers | 101.2 | 3 | Ben Roethlisberger | 97.0 | 5 |
| XLIV | 2009 | Drew Brees | 109.6 | 1 | Peyton Manning | 99.9 | 6 |
| XLIII | 2008 | Ben Roethlisberger | 80.1 | 24 | Kurt Warner | 96.9 | 3 |
| XLII | 2007 | Eli Manning | 73.9 | 25 | Tom Brady | 117.2 | 1 |
| XLI | 2006 | Peyton Manning | 101.0 | 1 | Rex Grossman | 73.9 | 24 |
| XL | 2005 | Ben Roethlisberger | 98.6 | 3 | Matt Hasselbeck | 98.2 | 4 |
| XXXIX | 2004 | Tom Brady | 92.6 | 9 | Donovan McNabb | 104.7 | 4 |
| XXXVIII | 2003 | Tom Brady | 85.9 | 10 | Jake Delhomme | 80.6 | 14 |
| XXXVII | 2002 | Brad Johnson | 92.9 | 3 | Rich Gannon | 97.3 | 2 |
| XXXVI | 2001 | Tom Brady | 86.5 | 6 | Kurt Warner | 101.4 | 1 |
| XXXV | 2000 | Trent Dilfer | 76.6 | 20 | Kerry Collins | 83.1 | 12 |
| 90.81 average |
9.5 average | 95.47 average |
5.5 average |
Some interesting stats:
On average, in the past 11 years, Super Bowl winning QB's had lower QB ratings (90.81) in the regular season than losing Super Bowl QB's (95.47).
In 2007, Eli Manning had a regular season QB rating of only 73.9 and won the Super Bowl, yet Tom Brady had the best regular season QB rating of 117.2 and lost.
All QB's combined average QB rating rank averaged 8.22 so if I was going to pull a stat out of a hat, this is the one would be the one I look for. Consistently Rank in the Top 8 for QB ratings and you're in the elite.
These stats show that just because you have a high QB rating, it doesn't always translate into winning the Super Bowl. Sure, you would like to have a QB with the best QB rating year in and year out, but while higher usually means better, it doesn't always mean winner.
Fight almost broke out between Dolphins' Marshall, Davis

What the hell is Ben Volin thinking?

No player vote Wednesday
A person familiar with the NFL negotiations told The Associated Press that players would not vote Wednesday on a deal to end the lockout.
This will make things interesting....
The Dolphins won't miss Henne's big arm by taking him off the field.
That's because it never was flexed in the first place.
ESPN Stats & Information notes that 31 quarterbacks have attempted more throws that have traveled longer than 20 yards in the air than Henne has.
The Dolphins, meanwhile, have the NFL's worst pass defense when adding defensive back pressure.
Opponents have a league-high 149.8 passer rating in those situations, completing 16 of 20 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns. They've forced zero interceptions and recorded three sacks.
ESPN Stats & Information sorts each play in about every imaginable way, and those researchers inform us when opponents send a defensive back after Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer, he shreds them.
Palmer has completed 74.5 percent of his passes for 465 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions and four sacks, according to Stats & Information's records against added pressure from the secondary. He ranks fourth with a 119.5 passer rating.
On the flip side, Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne ranks immediately behind Palmer in this category with a 117.4 passer rating. Henne has completed 62.5 percent of his passes for 236 yards and a league-high four touchdowns. He has thrown one interception and has been sacked once.
Dolphins sign fullback Deon Anderson
The Miami Dolphins signed former Dallas Cowboys fullback Deon Anderson after terminating the contract of linebacker Bobby Carpenter, who struggled on special teams.
The 5-foot-10, 245-pounder former Cowboys sixth-round draft pick was selected in the 2007 NFL draft out of Connecticut.
Broncos WR Kenny McKinley Dies
Sad news. Reports are coming in from all around that NFL that Broncos WR Kenny McKinley has taken his own life. He was 23 years old. A 5th Round Draft Pick in 2009, McKinley missed all of 2009 with a knee injury. He was hoping to return to form in 2010, but another knee injury forced him back on I/R early in Training Camp.
My prayers go out to the McKinley family.
Dolphins among NFL's youngest, biggest
The average Dolphin had 3.47 seasons of experience, lowest in the AFC and second-lowest in the league. They carried 13 rookies or first-year players, tied for third in the NFL. They have only four players who are 30 or older, fewest in the NFL.
The Dolphins had the second-heaviest club last year at 251.38 pounds, reflective of Bill Parcells' longstanding attitude that bigger is better. They actually got bigger this year, averaging 253.62 pounds, but dropped to third behind Parcells' previous team, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Baltimore Ravens (by two-one hundredths of a pound).
Who Would You Place Your Rock In Front Of?
My wife and I are watching a Gordon Ramsey show (cooking show for those who don't know), and he did a clever thing where he had everyone that worked in the restaurant take a rock and place it in front of the person they thought was the leader. What's funny is they were all choosing different people and it quickly showed how no one was in charge.
This made me ponder the question regarding our QB's, specifically Henne & CP10.
If we asked all of the players to take a rock and put it in front of the QB they thought was the leader on the team, do you think they would all put it in front of Henne, CP10, or both, and if both, doesn't that show a leadership problem on our team to begin with?
For as much as I like CP10, I almost feel that by having him lingering as the backup, it sends a mixed message to the team as to who the leader is. I think in order for Henne to take full control of the team, the message has to be clear.
What do you think?

Nice article from From Tim Graham - "Polite's game is all about violence -- marrow-rattling blocks and sledgehammer runs." Couldn't have said it better myself.
Marshall picked up the ball he dropped and punted it .
Guess if he can't get anywhere in basketball in case of a work stoppage, he's got soccer to fall back on?

That didn't take long.
