Thursday Random Daytime Thread: Overflow Edition

REGULAR DAILY STATEMENT-This is one of our daytime random live threads. I will post one each non holiday Monday through Friday. Feel free to stop in during your work day and chat about whatever....

Miami has $9.8 million in cap space as of this morning.

12

Seems a bit of a low figure being that Miami was estimated to have approximately $114 million dedicated to salaries and could roll close to $8 million in cap space to 2012. This is from a league source. The Dolphins still have flexibility too with the ability to restructure the contracts of players like Jake Long, Karlos Dansby, Yeremiah Bell, and others. **UPDATE** Miami currently rests at $9.8 million after they applied RFA tenders to Lydon Murtha, Jeron Mastrud, Phillip Merling, and Austin Spitler. That helps explain the low number.

Finhead's Musings: Free Agency Edition

Many think it'd be a failure for the Miami Dolphins if they fail to land Peyton Manning. Many also thought it was a failure for Miami when they didn't land Kyle Orton.

This was just too hilarious to pass up.

Eric Winston released by Houston.

Finally a quality RT on the market. Could be a solid free agent signing. Plus he comes from the University of Miami.

Peyton Manning's "narrowed down" list expands

15

The Houston Texans have now reached out to Peyton Manning as well. It's now being reported the Broncos, Cardinals, Dolphins, Texans, Titans, and 49ers are now alive for Peyton. So much for his listed being narrowed to just Denver and Arizona.

Cowboys and Redskins lose $46 million in cap space

23

The Redskins will lose $36 million in cap room and Dallas will lose $10 million. The NFL took their cap space away for front-loading contracts in 2010 and taking immediate cap hits during a year with no salary cap. Every team with the exception of the Oakland Raiders and New Orleans Saints will receive $1.6 million.

Peyton Manning will take a few more days to decide. As AlejandroN previously said, Manning will visit with Mike Munchak of the Titans and Joe Philbin of the Dolphins. The delay could give Miami an advantage. Arizona needs an answer soon as they owe Kevin Kolb big money at the end of the week. Denver could lose out on some WR free agents such as Vincent Jackson if Manning doesn't make his decision soon.

I have no links yet and am just going on by what I hear. The Jets have re-signed Sione Pouha for 3 years. That is one hole filled.

Peyton Manning has turned down requests from the Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs to meet them.

Multiple Media Outlets The same outlets think that Peyton has narrowed the decision between Arizona and Denver. Before people get overly pessimistic, I do believe it is possible Miami is still in consideration and that Peyton may have met with Dolphin brass without knowledge because of he is living in Miami. He can also meet Miami today or tomorrow without much knowledge from the media. After all, Stephen Ross is in South Florida this morning. Peyton to Miami was never guaranteed and expectations should probably be tempered, but you shouldn't rule Miami out.

Strange Report via ESPN

125

"ESPN's Adam Schefter has some bad news for Miami Dolphins fans, which might be good news for the New York Jets and several other teams. Schefter reports Miami may be losing ground already in the Peyton Manning sweepstakes. Schefter sites the recent helicopter chase and the way the Dolphins failed at pursuing head coach Jeff Fisher as ominous signs. The Dolphins expect to meet with Manning soon so the future Hall of Fame quarterback can get a feel for the organization. Miami was considered one of the early favorites to land Manning." The chase for Jeff Fisher ended on January 14, 2012. How is Miami just now losing ground over something that happened two months ago? It would be one thing if Peyton Manning was a free agent when the Rams hired Fisher. Maybe Cecil Collins being arrested in 1999 is really the reason Ricky Williams retired in 2004...

The Race is On

5

12 teams have already contacted Peyton Manning's representatives. Only the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals have been confirmed as one of the teams to reach out, but you can bet Miami was one of the other 10 teams.

The Indianapolis Star is reporting talks between Robert Mathis and the Indianapolis Colts are "heating up" and Mathis may be resigned. That would be a potential target off the market for Miami. The National Football Authority is also reporting the Bengals have indeed been holding talks with other teams about trading up, possibly targeting Alabama RB, Trent Richardson. Unfortunately, the rumor is the Bengals are speaking with the Arizona Cardinals, not the Miami Dolphins. Reports suggest the Bengals could send the 17th pick and others to the Cardinals for the 13th pick.
