Happy Memorial Day

It is only the dead who have seen the end of war. -Plato
Today is Memorial Day and I want to thank my brothers and sisters who have served along side of me in the military.
I joined the US Army July 3, 2001. Right out of high school, only 17 years old. I was one day away from graduating basic training when 9/11 took place. Immediately I knew I was going to war. While initially scared, I wanted to make a difference. I wanted to stop terrorism and make this world a better place.

Friday night things started slowly for the Fish. After a uneventful first inning, Angel Pagan led off the second with a single to left. Huff followed with a single of his own, moving Pagan to third. The infield decided to play for the double play and got it when Arias would hit a ground ball to Infante. The double play was turned successfully, but the run would score. Tim Lincecum grounded into a fielders choice to end the half-inning.
In the top of the third, JJ's struggles continued. Blanco and Crawford led off the inning with singles before Cabera and Posey would line out on well hit balls. JJ could not escape the inning though as Pagan would single home a run while Crawford would be tagged out at third trying to stretch the play.
In the bottom of the forth, Infante and Hanley both got out before Stanton would come to the plate. MIKEY! He did what he does best. Stanton took one deep and hit a dinger off the waves in the home run sculpture. No damage was done to the art, and the score was now 2-1.
The top of the fifth started well with JJ striking out his first two batters (also his first KOs of the game). On a full count, Cabrera hit a liner down the right field line that bounced off the foul pole for a cheap, but effective home run. JJ then struck out Posey for the third out to end his night.
To the bottom of the sixth is where the real fun started.
Vote on Stanton's Glove
If you haven't done so already, please vote. The numbers on the story are as of 4/29.
As of 5/13, Stanton still leads MLB right fielders in errors although Justin Upton has tied him for that top statistic. He has also dropped from 13th to 20th in rank of UZR for right fielders.

Friday night started nicely for the Fish. After a quick top of the first, Jose Reyes led off the bottom of the inning with a triple to right center field. Omar Infante was able to drive him in with a bloop single to left. After a Hanley Ramirez strikeout, Austin Kearns took one deep to the Clevelander and made the score 3-0 before the inning would end.

Hero of the Game: Omar Infante .574
Goat of the Game: Josh Johnson -.576
Play of the Game: Omar Infante doubled to center. Hanley Ramirez scored.
In a game that featured just about everything under the sun, Steve Cishek would end up the hero of the night. Friday night included home runs, stolen bases, a pick-off, runners interference, diving catches, mistakes but no errors, a 3-run triple by a pitcher, passed balls, poor pitching by an all-star, bloops, bad calls, bad throws, a balk to score a run, plays at the plate, a great slide to score a run by a pitcher, a flurry of intentional walks, great base running, bad base running, aggressive calls, empty bullpens, lots of sacrifice attempts, magical gummy bears, dramatics up the ying-yang, and of course...a blown save by Heath Bell.
It all started with a bang for the Fish. Jose Reyes started the game with a bloop single which was followed by an Emilio Bonifacio walk. That drew a catcher-pitcher meeting with Hanley Ramirez coming up. Anthony Bass and Nick Hundley must have been sharing lasagna recipes because Hanley took one deep to left center on the first pitch. That promptly made the score 3-0 with no outs. Greg Dobbs then grounded out before Omar Infante would beat out the throw hustling on an infield single. Giancarlo Stanton continued his hot steak with a powerful shot that had the whole stadium in awe. Stanton cleared the bullpen in center to give the Fish a 5-0 lead. Gaby Sanchez was then robbed of a hit by a diving Cameron Maybin before Brett Hayes would strike out to end the assault.
The bottom of the first didn't appear to start so well for Josh Johnson either. After a deep fly out, JJ allowed two singles and hit Chase Headley in between the two to load the bases. Johnson was able to recover. He got Hundley to fly out to shallow center before striking out Orlando Hudson to end the inning.
Wild Pitch! 04/29/12
Because there have been so many stories posted, last week's Wild Pitch only recorded two captions and thirteen votes. Please caption and/or vote!
How would you rate Stanton's glove?
We all know Giancarlo Stanton is famous for his powerful bat and strong arm, but some debate has arose about his defensive ability. Stanton has committed three errors so far this season and Thursday had another ball bounce off his glove. That ball was ruled a triple even though Stanton should have caught it and the runner would score on a sac-fly. The Fish would go on to lose that game by one run.
In my opinion, Stanton is a great athlete that can get decent jumps, has above-average speed, and has a great arm. These qualities give him a higher UZR than Morrison, who should be playing first base, and Bonifacio, who has a weak arm. Stanton is ranked 13th of MLB right fielders in UZR. This week I ask readers, not based on bat, arm, or insticts...How would you rate Stanton's glove?

Saturday night things started sketchy for the Marlins. Anibal Sanchez took the mound and gave up two doubles and a single in the first, but struck out the side before more than two runs could cross the plate. He certainly settled down after that as those three hits would be the only hits he allowed in his seven innings of work. Anibal managed to strike out 14 Diamondbacks! Ian Kennedy was no slouch either. He pitched a scoreless game until the 7th when Omar Infante hit a triple and Jose Reyes drove him in with a single.

Fridays matchup between the Nationals and the Marlins was a tight one. Both teams were playing well coming into this series. After an uneventful first inning, Stanton led off the second with a single to left. Gaby Sanchez would fly out before Austin Kearns would double to left. Stanton was held at third and John Buck would get an opportunity. He lifted one to center, but not deep enough for Stanton to tag, especially with Rick Ankiel throwing. Donnie Murphy would then strike out to end the threat. Zambrano would toss another one, two, three to end the inning.

Hero of the Game: H. Ramirez (.069 WPA)
Goat of the Game: G. Stanton (-.173 WPA)
Play of the Game: S. Victorino homerun in 4th inning (.144 WPA)
Thursday's match-up featured Mark Buehrle and the Marlins taking on Joe Blanton and the Phillies to decide who would win the series. Both pitchers started of well as the only hit in the first three innings would come off the bat of John Buck when he doubled to left with one out. Mark Buehrle then had an opportunity to help himself and nearly did so as he hit the ball back up the middle on a 1-0 count. Unfortunately for the Marlins, Freddy Galvis made a great play at second base, tracking down the ball and throwing Buehrle out. Buck would advance to third, but Jose Reyes would line out to a sliding Hunter Pence to end the inning.
Dolphins re-sign Merling, Murtha
The Miami Dolphins announced that two of their restricted free agents have signed their respective tender offers.
Defensive lineman Phillip Merling, a second-round pick in 2008, signed his tender offer, as did offensive tackle Lydon Murtha.
Merling has 3.5 career sacks with the Dolphins, as well as one interception and one touchdown.
Murtha has been with the Dolphins since 2009 when he was signed off the Detroit Lions practice squad.
Have you ever witnessed a cycle?
Last night Omar Infante was a single away from becoming the only Marlin to ever hit for the cycle, but fell up short. In the 19 year history of the Fish, there have been four no-hitters but no cycles. In MLB history there have been 293 cycles compared to 272 no-hitters. So with that being said, a cycle is just as rare as a no-hitter. This week I ask readers...

What would you do with $640,000,000?
Yesterday three lucky people won the largest lottery in world history of six-hundred forty million dollars. The Mega Millions tickets were sold in three different states across the United States. Florida was not one because it does not participate in that particular lottery. Now those winners must split the jackpot three ways, but I don't imagine they will be complaining.
This week I ask readers to comment instead of just answering a simple poll. Consider you won the entire amount. What would you do with the rest of your life? Would you buy the Marlins for yourself?
Tidbits:
- Jeffery Lorias net worth is $500 million.
- The Marlins estimated value is $425 million.
- Last year, all Marlin players combined made less than $57 million.

Have you ever caught a foul ball?
Last week 199 readers voted on a reasonable cost for a ballpark burger and the average was $5.19.
Fish fans disagree when it comes to the Marlins biggest rival. The leader is the Braves, followed closely by the Mets and Phillies.
The majority of readers have been Marlin fans since their inception in 1993. Other big years to acquire fans were 1997 and 2003. Hmmm..wonder why.
Readers like their favorite player for many different reasons. Work ethic and being an overall good players top the list, power and personality follow.
Mike Stanton is the fan-favorite.
26% of readers refuse to purchase any new Marlins gear.
Spring training is a great time to catch foul balls. I remember going to my first spring training game as a kid and catching four due to it being pretty empty. This week I ask readers...

How much is a reasonable cost to pay for a ballpark burger?
This year the Washington Nationals are going to start selling 'The StrasBurger'.
The StrasBurger is a monstrous all-beef burger (combination of ground brisket, chuck and short ribs). The burger is served on a large burger bun with our secret sauce, American cheese, shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes, sliced red onions, pickle chips and served with a cone basket of fresh cut fries and a pitcher of your choice of soft drink.
The weight of the burger is 8 pounds! That is about 32 quarter-pounders from McDonalds, a small bowling ball, or the weight of your entire head! The Strasburger is at least 8,000 calories, 600 to 700 grams of fat, and 200 to 300 grams of saturated fat. There is no set price yet for The StrasBurger, but I imagine the cost will be quite high.
That brings me to this weeks question. You expect to pay a markup when buying food at the ballpark, but when does it go to far? Considering you were buying a normal-sized burger from Marlins Park...

What year did you become a Marlins fan?
I have been a Marlins fan since I started liking baseball. In 1997, I was 13 years old and went to my first spring training game. I remember getting to watch Gary Sheffield and Bobby Bonilla play. During the game I got a chance to talk with Larry Rothschild and told him "You guys are gonna win it all this year". Of course later that year the Marlins took home their first World Series title. This week I ask readers...
