A new plan for Buster Posey in Sept?

About 2 weeks ago Baggarly posted on his blog that Buster wouldn't be called up to SF when the rosters are expended in Sept, because he would be playing for Team USA in the World Cup in Europe from Sept 9 - 27.  Baggs also reported that Brandon Crawford and other minor league Giants might be on the team too - here's the link to his post:

http://blogs.mercurynews.com/extrabaggs/2009/08/17/postgame-notes-bochys-message-big-night-for-martinez-poseys-european-vacation-etc/#more-1938

However, last night the official Team USA lineup was posted on MiLB.com, and Buster isn't on the team.  Believe it or not, the only Giant farm leaguer on the team is our intrepid relief pitcher Geno Espineli.  The 2 catchers on the team will be AA prospects Jason Castro of the Astros (formerly of Stanford) and Michael McKenry of the Rockies.  Both are good prospects, but not on Buster's level at this time.  Here's the link to the list:

I wonder if this change came from the Giants or Team USA?  Did Sabean wake up and decide that he was going to need Buster's bat and ability to get on base if we have any chance at the wild-card?  Does this mean that we will see Buster in SF next month (I know he's not on the 40 man roster yet)?  Does anybody want Buster here in Sept - at the risk of strating his arb clock?  Or, was Baggs's source just blowing smoke up his you-know-what, and Buster was never even invited to be on the team?

BTW, I wouldn't expect much from this team, because the pitching is exceedingly pedestrian.  Understandably, no team wanted to risk a top pitching prospect for this tournament.  If I were Team USA I would have gone after some college stud pitchers that would have been more than happy to go.

All-star selections are out for most of the ss-A and Rookie Leagues.

For the Northwest League, recently signed 2009 draft pick Drew Biery was named MVP of the league . He was also named to the All-Star team at 3B and DH (hard to do), and Jorge Bucardo was named the league's top RH starting pitcher. Here's the link:
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090827&content_id=6648260&vkey=news_milb&fext=.jsp

In the Dominican Summer League, Giants' 2B Carlos Willoughby was named Player of the Year. He was their only rep on the team. Here's the link to that story:
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090826&content_id=6630570&vkey=news_milb&fext=.jsp

Finally, for the AZL, the Giants had only 1 representattive on the All-Star team - starting pitcher Cameron Lamb. Here's the link to that story:

Please note that the 3rd paragraph in this story contains an error:
"Andy Bottin was named the Manager of the Year after leading the Mariners to a league-leading 32-21 record this year."
In fact, the Giants have the best record in the league at 36-18 (5.5 games better than the Mariniers). The Angels are 2nd best, and the Mariners are 3rd best. Even though the Giants have the top record in the league (overall and in both havles), only Lamb was selected as an AS, although they had a couple other deserving candidates. The Mariners, Angels, and Fodgers all had 3 AS selections apiece. So it seems that the Giants' manager, Mike Goff, had the best claim to the Manager of the Year award since he led his team to the best record, but with 2 fewer All-Stars than the Mariners had. Apparently Charlie Manuel had input into choosing the team.

It's being reported that the Mets have placed their recently reactivated closer Billy Wagner on waivers for the purpose of trying to trade him to a contender for the stretch drive. He's currently owed about $2.6M for the rest of the year, then you can buy out his 2010 option year for $1M, or exercise it and get him for only $8M in 2010 - very reasonable amount for a potential top closer.

The question I have is, should the Giants claim him? I say yes - for the following reasons:

1. To block him from going to another NL playoff race competitor above us in the standings that would be likely to claim him (Fodgers, Phillies, and Cards), or belwo us that might trade for him if he clears waivers (Marlins and Cubs). Not to mention possible AL world series foes that would likely want him (Angels, Detroit, Tampa).

2. Worse case the Mets go insane and allow us to have him for nothing in return - a la the White Sox and Alex Rios. He'd be a possible replacement for Howry out of our pen down the stretch, and we'd only owe him about $2.6M. Then we just exercise his $8M option in the offseason and wait for a good deal to trade him then or sometime before the 2010 trade deadline. A fully recovered Billy Wagner would be a bargain at only $8M - certain to garner something good from a team that needs a closer (Cubs, Marlins, Rays, ...). Or keep him in the pen and play him all year then offer him arb and get 2 comp picks when some team signs him as a FA. He also gives us a temporary backup plan if we decide to trade Brain Wilson.

3. If for some reason (unable to come back from the injury) we didn't want to keep him it would only cost an extra $1M to buy out the 2010 option year. We'd be out only $3.6M, which is not much considering the possible big reward we could get.

Happy Anniversary Panda - what a great year you gave us!

Thanks for all the thrills and chills!

Today (Aug. 13th) completes Pablo Sandoval's first full year of major league service and tomorrow will mark his one year anniversary.  I know that I'm not breaking any news to the members of this site when I say that Pablito's been awesome over the last year.  He not only quickly became the best everyday hitter on the team, but he also almost single-handedly turned a moribund team that only seemed to be decent and watchable on days that Timmeh pitched, into an entertaining squad that shows flashes of greatness, and is in the thick of the playoff chase.  Who would have guessed that was possible on August 14th of last year when a short, unathletic-looking kid took the field in Houston and went hitless in 3 AB's?

His stats for his "rookie season" are very good - especially when you consider that he was only 22 years old for all but the last 3 days of it, he almost never got any protection from the other hitters in the lineup, and he was being moved around between 3 different positions in the field.

    G      AB      H     R    2B  3B  HR   RBI  BB   K     AVG    OBP  SLG   OPS

  149   555   185   74   43   4    20     92   34   75   .333   .373   .533   .906

I'm most impressed that he's been able to increase his power numbers significantly the past 2.5 months without hurting his average, or increasing his K's (he has a K rate of only 12.7%).  Now if he can just get a bit more selective at the plate and cut down on his early-in-the-count swings at pitches that he has almost no chance of hitting for power, he can really take his game to an elite level.

ProjectProspect.com recently posted an updated, detailed and technical swing analysis of Buster Posey. It includes 2.5 minutes of a video montage of him hitting in spring training and as a member of the SJ Giants. The analyst's conclusion: Buster's very polished now, but can get even better.

Vicente Padilla was just DFA'd by the Rangers for the purpose of releasing him. The link states that no team claimed him on waivers and the Rangers could find no trading partners. The Rangers will be eating the remaining ~ $6M of his salary and buy-out option.

Some people are urging us to go after John Smoltz as a 5th starter or reliever, so I was wondering if there's any interest in Padilla? I'm not pushing for it, but wouldn't be upset if it was handled properly. We could pay him the league minimum and probably start him out with a minor league contract, so there would be almost no risk involved.

His stats are messy, but he's only 31 and may benefit from getting out of Rangers Stadium, pitching in the NL again, and at AT&T. Here's his stats:

MLBTR has posted a list of the remaining unsigned 2009 1st rounders. They have nothing useful to add on our negotiation status with Wheeler, beyond a glib statement that we need to sign him to replenish our SP depth.

It shouldn't surprise anybody the Boras reps many of these players, and that all of them are said to be not close to signing.

They also conclude that Tyler Matzek looks to be a no sign for the Rockies, as well as Matt Purke for the Rangers. I'm so glad that we were smart and didn't pick either of them.

Dan Runzler - the 2010 SF Giant closer?

The Giants have a lot of good young pitching in the minors - both starting and relief.  You already know the big names, but I want to highlight a guy that's flying under the radar and putting up the best numbers of any pitcher in our system.

Dan Runzler has been virtually unhittable so far this year.  When you delve down into his stats they're shockingly impressive.  He's only given up 2 runs and 12 hits in 43 innings pitched this year - less than 3 hits, and more than 13 Ks, per 9 innings pitched!

Here are his stats for this year (split between Augusta and SJ), you can see that, except for Ks, he's actually gotten better after being promoted to high A:
Augusta:  0.68 ERA / 0.8 WHIP / 19 games / 26.1 IP / 2 runs / 8 hits / 45 K / 13 BB / .093 BAA
San Jose:  0.0 ERA / 0.42 WHIP / 15 games / 16.2 IP / 0 runs / 4 hits / 18 K / 3 BB / .070 BAA

This guy looks like one good option to allow us to trade Brian Wilson this offseason, or sometime next season, while his value is still high.  Runzler is a 24 years old (DOB = 3/30/85) lefty,  so he's old for an A+ league.  I'd like to see him promoted to AA soon to see if he continues to impress - maybe he can go up with our other A+ stud, Thomas Neal.

He's a big, strong guy at 6'4" and 215 pounds, so he should have no problem handling the load.  Has anybody seen him pitch, or have a scouting report on him?  What's the velocity on his FB?  Does he have any good secondary pitches?  What's his out pitch?

Jason Schmidt will be called up to start for the Fodgers this Monday against the Reds. I hope that he stays healthy, but has a terrible W/L record - while further goading Torre into beating his bullpen like a dead horse.

Here's a link to a video of former #1 pick Matt Bush being arrested for drunk driving and resisting arrest. It's hilarious, but sad. He gives new meaning to the phrase "crying shame". Oh, and the title to the thread is comic genius.
