SANTO DOMINGO. - The ex- Major League Baseball player Jose Uribe died in an accident at 3:00 A.M. today Friday, while driving on the Nizao-San Cristóbal highway, some 30 miles west of this capital.

The Dominican player was traveling alone in a Mitsubishi SUV at the time (of) the accident.

Ken Rosenthal:

"White Sox general manager Ken Williams might be aggressive, but he isn't reckless. So, discount any reports that he's willing to trade right-hander Brandon McCarthy and center fielder Brian Anderson to the Giants for right-hander Jason Schmidt.

Not even the most hare-brained GM would move two young talents, each with less than one year of service time, for a potential free agent that could depart in less than three months."

Rosenthal also lists the Giants as a "possible suitor" for Alfonso Soriano.

"One rumor has the Giants sending Jason Schmidt to the White Sox for 23-year-old pitcher Brandon McCarthy and 24-year-old outfielder Brian Anderson. That would be a great trade for the Giants if a) they have given up on 2006 and b) they are sure Schmidt will walk when his contract expires. But neither is true.

Giants general manager Brian Sabean said the Giants would have to go into a "horrific slide" toward the end of July before he would become a seller or consider dumping Schmidt, and he does not see that happening.

"We're still unequivocally buyers," he said."

"I don't usually comment [on the case] because I don't know how to comment on it," said Bonds, who will turn 42 on July 24. "I don't know why the government is doing what it's doing. It doesn't make any sense to me. I don't know how to discuss the case. I really don't. Maybe later on I'll be able to. I try not to think about it. I try to keep my mind as clear as I can and as positive as I can."

About his possible return to the Giants, Bonds said: "My thing in San Francisco is based on the fans. If they want me back, then that's probably what I'd want to do. It's my home. That's where I'd want to be."

"Former Rams receiver Jack Snow died Monday after struggling with complications from a staph infection for the better part of the past month. He was 62.

Snow is survived by three children, daughters Michelle and Stephanie and son J.T."

The rumor mill has churned out the latest Matt Morris gossip.

"Jocketty met Tuesday morning with Barry Axelrod, the agent for free-agent pitcher Matt Morris, but said later that the spiraling market for starting pitching has taken Morris out of the club's price range.

Morris is believed to be leaning toward accepting a two-year offer from the San Francisco Giants; he is certain to command more than the two-year, $14.25 million deal the Cleveland Indians gave Paul Byrd. The Giants' proposal is for more than $8 million a season, according to a source familiar with talks. "His market has developed beyond what we feel comfortable with, but we haven't closed it out," Jocketty said."
