Big Blue View Draft Saturday: LB edition

There's more then a few who want the Giants to draft an LB in the first round this year. There's also at least 2 of you all who want them to draft an LB in every single round, then sign all available FA LBs (also maybe release some players on the roster, then sign more LBs)

I highly doubt Reese does either of these, even in a draft class that is chock full of solid LB prospects. Why? Look at Jon Goff and you're realize that you can get away with middle round picks behind an elite DL.

That said, there's at least 2 LBs, maybe 3 who really are 1st round worthy. I doubt Reese drafts any player in the first round unless he's a freak of nature. He's not drafting a player just to fill a need. You get drafted in round one, you better have star potential. And he's been right with Nicks, KP looks like an elite S, and I still hold that Ross would be one if he ever stays healthy (and probably better on the outside instead of playing nickle.

Rant over.

Big Blue View Draft Saturday

Too early? Nope.

What do the Giants need? I'd say...

OL- probably top priority, although Beatty and Andrews may have a shot to show they're the starting bookends by the end of the season. Mitch Petrus still exists, so he may have one of the guard spots to his own (and its LG...Snee is still an elite RG). OC is probably the most glaring spot, but Adam Koets not only showed that he too still exists, but may be the OC of the future. All in all, look for the GIants to IGNORE (you'll see why) all OL spots except for OC, simply cuz there's young backups on the squad who could start in 2011.

LB- aka the reason the Giants are 2-2 and not 10-0 in their first 4 games of the season. Luckily..the draft is chock full of playmaking freaks of nature. The Giants to me, will only draft a freak of nature who's a good character dude.

RB-  Bradshaw's look excellent so far, aside from those fumbles. Jacobs, even tho to me the legs look back and when he was pissed, the shoulder is there...he's still probably gone at the end of the season.

DB- of course, this most likely is our first round pick..given our draft history and all. DL probably is a no. WR ditto unless AJ Green falls that far. So that leaves DB. There's at least 3 top flight DBs in this draft. Safety is OK, not as good as last draft (understandably so).

Dark Horse- TE. Boss is injury prone I guess..or at least has the wrong type of injury you want to have a lot of. Beckum is what he is, a receiving TE. And Pascoe may be the FB of the future.

That leaves Kyle Rudolph. Who is a monster and there really doesn't need else be said on that. He's just a monster.

Not sure if anyone listened to this interview. Its always good to hear JR talk about the draft.

Michael Kay even asked some questions for us.

Maybe the reason they took so long for their "slam dunk" pick at #15, wuz cuz JR was doing back flips cuz he got JPP?

Big Blue View Giants Grades

Overall, I give them a B+. While most of us can probably agree, these guys are mostly boom or bust (even for rookies) I get the sense these dudes all have good attitudes to where they will more likely fulfil their potential..or at the very least not be so black and white as to boom and bust. I think most will be solid contributers.

All of these guys, while raw, stood out on game tape for the most part. So its really not like while they're raw, they'll just doing nothing.

These guys get by on pure physical ability, so even if they don't know what they're doing...they still have natural ability that can help do what they do.

Big Blue View Smoke..fire...BON-FIRE!!!

Aight.  I'm off to the bon-fire with the Osi to JAX deal. Here goes.

We get Osi + 15, for the Jags #10 overall and their 4th. Why the 4th? I dunno. They owe us.

Also, the scenario is Ro McClain's off the board.

Big Blue View Picks and Trades!!

OK, so this is very unlikely...but its likely, got it?

Here's the 1st round I got

  1. St. Louis (1-15) Sam Bradford QB
  2. Detroit (2-14)Ndamukong Suh DT
  3. Tampa Bay (3-13)Gerald McCoy DT
  4. Washington (4-12)Russel Okung OT
  5. Kansas City (4-12) Eric Berry S
  6. Seattle (5-11) Derrick Morgan DE
  7. Cleveland (5-11) Earl Thomas S/CB
  8. Oakland (5-11)Jason Pierre Paul DE
  9. Buffalo (6-10)Jimmy Clausen QB
  10. Jacksonville (7-9)Joe Haden CB
  11. Denver - from Chicago (7-9)Rolando McClain ILB
  12. Miami (7-9)Dan Williams DT
  13. San Francisco (8-8) CJ Spiller RB
  14. Seattle - from Denver (8-8) Brian Bulaga OT Iowa

What to do? No Ro, Spiller, no Morgan. Trent Williams, Tony Davis and Weatherspoon are on the board. As is Brandon Graham.

We got an offer on the table!! Eagles offer #24 + #70 for #15 and the Giants 6th rounder. SURE! says JR

Eagles can get their new toast, and the Giants trade their 6th rounder for a high third!

Philadelphia- Kyle Wilson CB - Titans, Steelers, and Texans all could've taken Wilson.
Tennessee (8-8) Sean Weatherspoon OLB (damn..)
San Francisco - from Carolina (8-8) Trent Williams OT
Pittsburgh (9-7) Jared Odrick DE (look how old their DL is)
Atlanta (9-7) Brandon Graham DE
Houston (9-7) Devin McCourty CB
Cincinnati* (10-6) Dez Bryant WR
New England* (10-6) Jerry Hughes OLB
Green Bay* (11-5) Anthony Davis OT
 NY Giants?

So...Weatherspoon, Iupati and even Brandon Graham are all off the board. Who we taking?

Maurkice Pouncey-OC Florida, that's who. Center and OG depth, maybe he starts at LG next year? Either way, for his position he may be the most talented OL next to Russ Okung in the draft.

Finishing out the 1st

Baltimore* (9-7) Jermaine Gresham TE
Arizona* (10-6) Terrence Cody NT
Dallas* (11-5) Mike Iupati OG
San Diego* (13-3) Ryan Matthews RB
New York Jets* (9-7) Sergio Kindle OLB
Minnesota* (12-4) Kareem Jackson CB
Indianapolis* (14-2) Charles Brown OT
New Orleans* (13-3) Taylor Mays S

Now during the "off day", talks get heated with the Rams for Mr. Umenyiora. Rams agree to send #33 and swap picks in the 4th round with the Giants. So now we have #33 and #97 overall. Just for those keeping track, this trade "values" Osi as worth a 2nd and late 2nd/early third rounder.

Now, just the Giants picks

#33 Carlos Dunlap-DE Florida- 6"6 277

8ae3c6a56d7cd94e973d52847b3daaa2_medium

via gcwatercooler.files.wordpress.com

Yes..back to back Florida picks. This ain't Spurrier's Gators, so I think the Gator curse is off for us. Pouncey will hopefully anchor our OL for the next 10 years, and Dunlap becomes the most physically gifted and imposing DE since Strahan.

Yea, he's bigger then Tuck..and played plenty of DT on passing downs for the Gators. I know he's got some character concerns, but as a pure talent he's top 10 worthy. If the GIants staff gets through to him, we got ourselves a super star and a young Strahan.

Yes..I keep mentioning #92, but that's cuz Dunlap is THAT talented to be that sort of player.

#46) Lamarr Houston DT-Texas 6"3 305

587569_medium

via media.scout.com

But that's #36? Well that's cuz Houston came in as a RB..but now at 305lbs, he ain't that no more (tho maybe we get a goal line fullback here?)

Houston and Dunlap are damn near identical athletically, and considering they're both gigantic, that's a great thing. The Giants get bigger, more athletic and faster along their front 4.

Build through the trenches, then let the others fall in line

Also, bye Rocky. You're supposed to be in Philly anyway...chump.

Round 3 (#70 from Eggs)

Jamar Chaney LB Miss State 6"1 245

9chaneyweb_t300_medium

via media.commercialappeal.com

Really, comes down to between Chaney and Sean Lee. Both whom had recent injury history in college. I go with Chaney as he's much more athletic, and also bigger as well.

Jerry Reese seems confident in who we got on the roster, so while that means they feel there's people on the roster to take the LB reigns, that doesn't mean competition isn't needed.

Chaney is very versatile, he can play any of the 3 LB spots. Either way, he improves depth and speed in the LB corps, so no matter who's starting..whether its Goff..or GASP!! Gerris Wilkinson, we have a speedy alternative.

Maybe Goff is the 2 down MLB, and Chaney and Boley are the nickel LB's?

Round 4) Akwasi Owusu Ansah- CB/KR Indiana (PA)

Pro_action_ansah_medium

via www.d2football.com

AOA is JR's small school pick de jour for 2010. He should actually help last years small schooler, Pharoahe Ramses Barden, get on the field.

We can cut (or trade...) Dominick Hixon and let AOA handle KR duties while he learns the defense as our nickle/dime CB. So now there's a spot open on the WR depth chart for Barden..tho he'd still have to play on ST.

AOA's also big enough and physical enough to dabble in at some safety if need be too, so it takes care of that.

Back to Hixon!!!! Giants trade him to Cleveland for pick #143 Rd. 5. They don't really need a KR, but Hixon is a home-town dude (Akron). Would they do this deal? WHo knows...but it gets done here, cuz I said so.

Cleveland has plenty of picks, and also could really use a "vet" like Hixon in that locker room.

#143) Rd 5

Deji Karim 5"9 210 Southern Illinois RB

Dsc_7033_medium

via web.me.com

Everyone's favorite sleeper, JR dips back to SIU for another RB, this time a "small" and fast one. Karim is a whole lot like Tiki Barber to be honest, and I think his twin brother is Nate Robinson.

This pick would allow the Giants to create a survival of the fittest comp among the RB's in camp. Karim could also battle it out with AOA for the ST duties.

#144 ) Rd 5 (yes we gots back to back now!!

Ciron Black OT LSU-6"5 330

668417_medium

via media.scout.com

Ciron is a mountain of a man who's got a whole hell of a lot of consecutive starts as LSU's Left Tackle. That means he's the best OL on a upper echelon SEC team, meaning he goes up against top competition.

Ciron seems to be one of those plummeters in the draft, he was a first round talent last year..but similar to others (like Sun Dial Spikes) he falls most likely cuz he's fat.

The Giants gets a steal here however, as CB is experienced and talented enough to start..possibly right away at RT or a OG position.

Round 7) Matt Dodge P 6"2 220lbs East Carolina

2605392_medium

via grfx.cstv.com

OK, so it ain't Zoltan. But while Mesko may have the better name, Matt Dodge has the better game. Dude averaged 45.8 yards per punt. That's almost half the field.

OK. So what did we do? No Osi and no Hixon. Allows us to commit to Kiwi along the DL. Also getting rid of Hixon can allow us to get more dynamic at the PR/KR spots.

Pouncey- future starter at OC, possible starter at LG in 2010. Beatty-Pouncey-O'Hara-Snee-Diehl is that starting OL. Yes, 2 youngins along the left side, but the left side stunk in 2009, so..yea.

Dunlap-backs up Tuck and Kiwi- Can come in and play DT on passing downs. Basically, he's got Tuck's 2007 role.

Houston- allows Rocky to be let go. Pushes Canty to do SOMETHING as well. Quick enough to be a DE as well.

Chaney- Starts in at MLB at best, or provides depth and special teams speed at worst.

AOA- Dime CB and KR/PR competition. "Project" but physically a 1st round athlete for Fewell to get going.

Karim- battles it out with the other RB's.

Ciron Black- OT depth to battle. Maybe they cut McKenzie? Could be teh 2010 version of Dave Diehl? He's very experienced, so him having a good camp could possibly allow for Beatty-Diehl-O"hara-Snee-Black to be that starting fat lineup.

Matt Dodge-KO specialist, he's gotta booming leg. I dunno what this Jy Bond character can do either.

Not incredibly in-depth analysis, but basically sums up why McClain is the better option for the Giants, and Weatherspoon really isn't really an option even if McClain is off the board.

Big Blue View Look at my Giant Mock!

7 rounds. All in one!

More players and pictures!!

I'm gonna go more with some wishful thinking in this mock. Going by some mock drafts out there, seems that these players may fall into the Giants laps. All are BPA type thing things...so there

Guess you can call this...the (Hakeem) dream draft,

1) Rolando McClain- 6"3 250lbs Alabama Junior

Mcclain-forces-fumble-large-almondjpg-2c8f6cbafbbb1d3b_large_medium

via media.al.com

Obviously. The man. The Choice. He falls...that's the pick.

Now, for the good stuff.

2) Jahvid Best-RB Cal 5"10 199lbs

2920521270_461c9f8fb5_medium

via farm4.static.flickr.com

Believe it or not...Best is actually 3lbs heavier then CJ Spiller (199 vs. 196) and one inch shorter. Like Spiller, Best is an electric playmaker with excellent hands for any player on the field, regardless of position.

The real difference to me, is that he had that concussion problem. Now it would be a concern if it was him actually getting hit...but he did it to himself.

Tell Jahvid not to bump his wittle head in the EZ...and I think he'll be fine. Now...the only questions are...Does he fall this far? And if he does, do I have that many pairs of shorts to change into?

Round 3) Lamarr Houston DT Texax 6:3 305.

1253430813_medium

via insidetexas.com

Possibly even more wishful then the first 2 rounds...

I actually saw a mock or 3 with Houston falling this far. Dunno why, he's one of the more athletic 300lbs men in the draft.

These are the sorts of players JR just sits there and watches fall directly into his lap on draft day. Is it wishful? Yes.

Can it happen? Bet your arse it could.

4) Akwasi Owusu- Ansah 6"1 200lbs Indiana PA

3945290_medium

via www.iupques.com

Here's JR's small school gem for 2010.  He's a bit raw, then again..he had 8 INT's his junior year, then subsequently avoided like the plague when he was a senior, still getting 2 picks.

He could compete and hopefully win out with our 2nd round gem, Best. And he could develop as a 4th corner for us too and hopefully fill in if/when Aaron Ross' hamstring barks again.

5) Tony Washington 6"5 311 Albilene Christian

20090910-203548-pic-446481147_t607_medium

via media.reporternews.com

Yes. The guy that did his sister. Putting that aside if you can, Tony's is is right up there with Bruce Campbell and Trent Williams in terms of athletic gifts for a OT.

I still would like to see WIll Beatty as our LT. And even tho Tony's an elite athlete too, his strength and nastiness (...) could make him a future starter at RT. What more could you ask from as a 5th rounder?

Round 6 Daniel Te'o-Nesheim 6"3 263 Washington

Img_0202_medium

via davesizer.com

Quite possibly, the steal of the draft. DTN isn't an athletic dude, tho he did quell concerns on that by running a 4.75 and looking good in drills.

One of those dudes that produced a TON in college yet for some reason falls on draft day. I don't think he's a OLB in the 3-4, so that could be a reason he plummets.

Either way, should this happen, this is a ton of value in this round and these sorts of watch and wait picks are why JR is such a great drafter.

Round 7) Kevin Matthews OC Texas A&M 6"5 298

3263337_medium

via grfx.cstv.com

Go for the bloodlines (worked with that QB we got) here in the 7th. Not sure how much he's on the radar of teams..but I don't think its out of the question for him to be here in the 7th.

Kevin's gonna have to bulk up, but he ain't gonna have to start right away..so they can feed him hoagies on the bench while he picks 's brain.

SO!!! THere you have it.

7 rounds. Everyone probably a round or 2 later then what they actually go....or not?

This is basically my dream draft. What say you?
