I am back again. Second year of the diamand bang! The competition about the bigggest surprise or upset from this year, cycling related. Last year ''Contador getting busted'' went away with the prize. Hopefully the diamond bang is a little more joyfull this year. You find more nominees from last year here and here. What is it going to be this year? 

The Diamond Bang could be anything. Rider who surprised you.. Poels! Team which stunned your mind, course, stage, GT which turned out be more excited. A DS who opend your mouth saying Whaaa.. Or anything.. As long as the rider, person, newssite, cyclingthing turned out to be more surprising/different/eyeopener than you have expected.

Podium Cafe RadioShack-Nissan-Trek finalised their roster

Who's going to work for who? Can 'I have cobbles for breakfast` celarra has very little support in th classic. Is this a sign that he's going to target the Tour? Sending the Shleck's there would be a chanceless thing to do. And is this teally the superteam it says it is? Or is that title for BMC?

Podium Cafe Possible merge between Saxo Bank and Astana?

There is an anti Radio Shack - Leopard movement. De Telegraaf reports that Saxo Bank and Astana have been talking to eacht other since the end of the Alpe D'Huez stage in the Tour de France. Why at that moment? Dunno. They want to bound their power to create superduperteam 2 around Alberto Contador, or well.. if he doesn't get the banhammer that is. Speculated is that the cyclebrand Specialised initiated the negotiations. 

What about that? Is it going to be the year of superteams? And does more firework gives your team more chance of winning the Tour? Because with all due respect, BMC was not a superteam..

Podium Cafe La battle de Rioja


The giro is the most fabulous Grand Tour in the year, the Tour the most happening, but the Vuelta has by far the best battle for the red jersey. We have had 10 stages. 2 mountain stage, 1 long TT and the gaps have been small. Hail for boni seconds!

I see 8 man who still could win the Vuelta. The top 7 + Nieve Rodriguez. You never know it with him. 

Nibali seems the man to beat. He knows how to win a Grand Tour and doesn't crack probably in the third week. Crack he only did at the last 200m of yesterday's stage. That didn't look good. 

Wiggins also in pole position to win the Vuelta. If he's as strong as yesterday? Than he wil win. But the mountains are getting steeper. Angliru, I'm talking about you!. Can he hang on there?

Froome. Well. Serious have doubt he can hang on. He came out of nowhere. So to hold that for the next 1.5 week?

Fuglsang. His weapon is the TT. Could hang on the climbs. But is not that good on the climbs. Can't see him winning.

Kessiakoff. Well. Seems he also find bavk his climbing skills. Better climber than Froome and Fuglsang. But don't think he can climb better than Wiggins and Nibali. Think he likes climbing not to long. 

Monfort. The Belgian who switched place with VDB. Steady as he go Monfort. Always finishing top 20. Invicible but no way he's going to come close to the rioja. He could be steady pedalling to higher places when some of the names above him will fall away.

Mollema. I think he's the best climber here.. Serious.. His sprint can help him close to the lead. Maybe I am looking it way to orange but with 3.5 uphill finishes left...  Btw: Not that I mind, but it would be nice if he attacks. He hang around yesterday which was good with all that wind. Only a real GC man has to attack, but if you win the Vuelta I will not nag, Mollema! 

Rodriguez. That 3.5 uphill finishes is the reason he still not knocked out. He could gain seconds with bonification and some attacks. The more steep hills are also in his adventage. But he should start moving fast.

Podium Cafe A Look at the course Vuelta a Espana 2011.. Stage 1 till 12

I'm sure everybody already studied the course of de Ronde van Spanje, Vuelta a Espana, the most predictable course this year! Because SPOILER ALERT! The race will be won by Mikel Nieve. You heard it here before. Sorry for ruining 3 weeks fun! Miguel Indurain the second has shown excellent climbing skills in the Giro and is quietly preparing to  dominate the Vuelta as only Luis Ocana could dominate a Grand Tour.

But to continue with the purpose of this post. How is the Vuelta going to look like? Is it hard, easy, for the time trialers, for Thor Hushovd? I've seen a little. The trend is going on. Lot's of difficult stages, less and less sprinters stages.. Almost need a loop to find them.

Podium Cafe Was the Tour Dope free?


Disclaimer: I think there will be some allegations toward riders in this thread. If you can't stand it don't read it. You've been warned. It's just a thread to take the doping to one place.. And I for one, don't mind talking doping. 

Every Tour goes with incoyable perfomces. We have seen Landis fly away, Kohl taking the KOM, Schumacher who was in every break, the Basque winning a stage, the chicken! All of who perfomaned on the edge and over. 

Does thhis doping trend break or continuein the Tour? Where their perfomances who couldn't be made without doping? As we seen the climbing times on some cols you would say there is at least a good indication of a cleaner peloton. With climbing times who where 2 minutes or more down. This also could be the case beacause of the weaknesses of the favorites, headwind or some of the maaad attacks from 95km to go. That will, for now, reamain a question..

Podium Cafe What's the top 5 going to be in Paris?

Useless post. Because we just had one mountainstage and now I'm going to ask you to predict the top 5 GC of the Tour. But I like to jump to conclusions so here is mine top 5


1 Andy Schleck Because he is still number one on the mountains

2 Cadel Evans He is sooo not a winner

3 Samsan We love orange. And he TT his place on the podium

4 Fränk Schleck Because he TT like a clown

5 Alberto Contador Where is he going to make time up?

6 Ivan Basso Because Jens, our Swedsh guy, said his first mountain stage was his best one

7 Thomas Voeckler Who else?! Noo probably not.. Out of the yello he will lose an half our to win an other stage again.

Yesterday on Dutch tv. Hope it's not geo-resticted

Rabobank was not that happy with Leopard-Schleck today. 15km for the finish Mollema flatted and that was the sign of the Leopard's to hit the gas. My first reaction was. Ooh young (24) Mollema was to far down when the climb began. Think this is also what Leoschleck thought. Only Ten Dam put himself behind the Canelard train and shouted in their faces.. Something what can not be repeated here and now They went on. Now the war is on and Mollema said: "I will not forget this action" Suggestion Rabobank is not going to forget this action in the Tour.

Was the action legal? Dutch fora suggest the Caneleck family are hypocrit. Weren't they the initiator of the neutralizing of the Spa stage?
Was it smart to make enemies for a third place in GC in the Tour de Suisse? What is the point? (A. Schleck already 'stole' yeah earned! the mountainsjersey of Ten Dam)
Did they really not know?

Podium Cafe Aren't we all a little orange inside?


Once upon a time there was a little country named Holland. We all lived peacefully here and I really hoped for you that this was the end of the story but no.  In this country there where 2 things we had enough. Water and wind. To transport everyone we had walkbikes, bikes with enormous wheels, bikes who where pulled by cows and the most important bikes with chain. Long and peacefully we could ride them without the annoying interference from Spaniards, French, Italians. They wanted to race with  bikes with us and God man, we sucked. 

And if that not was enough the competition came also from oversee. The introduction of airplans made it possible that there came riders from the USA, I also didn't know they had other ways to transport themself than cars!?, and from why couldn't they keep down under the sea Australia. We were shocked. Speechless and blown out of our shoes. Every finish we passed was at least 5 minutes behind the winner.  Every time we heard a starting shot the podium misses where already kissing the winners and while we were celebrating our victory in the Tour de Rijke, some other dude was standing on a podium in France?! What the fack dude..

 

"Enough!!" Cried through whole the Netherlands. "We can't let them embarrass them in our sport!"

Podium Cafe VDS teams revealed


VDS is on. Nobody listened to my well meant advices. 51 Farrar players? Really. Shame on you American people. But what if I didn't do the trick. What was your playing strategy? I was planning on a 80% Rabo team but couldn't give me 100% for that task. So instead I went for the winning 25 and I created: The Kings of Eritrea!

Why Eritrea? Because cycling is the biggest sport in Eritrea! How cool is that? You have to honour that. And after the disgraceful treatment Daniel Teklehaimanot got at Garmin my Captain was born.

With the winning streak at Rabo and me being Dutch it was clear as 1+1=2, that was all the math in this post, I promise,  Langeveld, Boom, Gesink where a lock in my team.

After that I just build my team around them. Tyler Farrar my top heavy guy because he loves to race.. And score points.. And well.. Haven't you read the Cav/Farrar vs Aladin story? see link

10-12 categry. Menchov! Ondervalued the guy. Winning the Vuelta is going to do massive things with his points. Marcato is somebody who finishes everywhere at the second place. Point he will get and Brajko.. Leader of RSH at the Tour. Hope he get his points. A little gamble. Not very likely to improve a lot. But we'll see what happens..

3 sprinters after that. The one and only sprint of LepparD-trek. Bennati. That guy is serious overrated, also by me, but when Lepardi-treko keep confidence in him he we'll be fine.  R. Feuillu, finally can sore at GT's and Bole.

Van Garderen, Belleti, Oss and Taaramäe. Young guys who could easily outscore their total points of last year.

1 and 2 points. Poels of course! He's Dutch, riding in the wrong team but I forgive him, Michael Matthews.. Rabo! LS Haedo, he's better than JJ Haedo en Felline. Upcomin talent.

1 points. Kittel! Riding at Skill could score points in minor tours, Ulissi talented Lampre climber and Vivani.. D'uuuh..

Podium Cafe Some VDS help

Deadlines are nice.. Although if VDS deadline is coming close.. And you tried everything: Stalking Jens for tips, asking the black unicorn to let crash riders to make picks easier, log in to PodiumcafVDS on open library places to hope somebody miracle makes a team for you, flip a coin to decide who's in or out, (this actually take a long time) than there is now.. A little help out.. (anti-climax)

Why should I be the one to help? Well I know a little of cycling.. And can shut out UNBIASED fandomness.. (well sometimes)

What did we learn. It are pretty medicore teams in their structure. (Except number 6!) Top heavy guys, some domestiques and "full of hope" riders. If cycling is not you core business.. Don't let you seduce to other structures. Last year only 3 of the 30 teams with a wild structure,, meaning lots of 12+, lots of 4-10 and lots of 1-2, cracked the 10000+. see here

Also don't overprice your team. The team with the biggest prospect, scored 10757 points in 2009!, did much less in 2010. Points earned in the past.. are no guarantee for points in the future.. The top 10 of those teams did not well.

Ok. Now I just let Ahillock do the talking:

Ideally you need to score 75-90 points per point spent if you want to be competitive in the top 10. If you don’t care about the top 10, then that really doesn’t matter.

The riders that have the greatest upside are those middle group riders: that 10-16 point range. Don’t believe me? Look at last year.

1) 16- Nibali= 599 to 2221
2) 14- Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver= 871 to 2000
3) 14- Vino= 485 to 1482
4) 8- Scarponi= 456 to 1293
5) 14- F. Schleck= 632 to 1224
6) 12- Luis Leon Sanchez Gil= 688 to 1210
7) 10- Oscar Friere= 540 to 1046
8) 8- Ryder Hesjedal= 420 to 1040

(Edit Frinking: Nice list. Altho there are 25 others guys who didn't overdo their price in this area. Don't let them get you)

Obviously there are also examples going the other way. However the top riders (I.e. Gilbert, Contador, Cancellara, Evans, Cavendish…etc.) that will cost you the big bucks 22-28 points are consistent at their point range. They really have reached their “peak” and will either maintain this or decrease in points scored based on condition/injuries during the year. It is very hard for them to increase their point value much more than they have except for a +/- 100 points here or there.

These are just a sampling of riders from the +22 point riders (22-32 points). The one standout was Tyler Farrar last year who at 20 points went from 1090 to 2000.

And Ursula:

The value of the real expensive riders is that you pretty much know what you are getting. Rarely do they go bust. To but them you are buying production at a fairly certain rate. You are buying insurance.

What did we learn. Top guys are there for the save points. Don't take to many. The 8-22 is the group you must nail if you want a good result.

Ok. What does this mean for your team? We need a normal stucture, pick one save top guy +22 for the save points and 3 till 7 10-22 points riders. Pick 6 and 8 pointers at will. Not to many! Than hire some good 1 pointers, yes they are there. Out of decent 1 pointers pick 2 pointers, out of decent 2 pointers, pick 4 pointers. Till you're maxed. (I liked this strategy..)

22+=pick 1 rider
10-22=pick 3-7 riders
6-8= pick 3-5 riders
1-4= the rest

Last random thought: Top 10 last year had a return of 79.9 per point spend.

Ok. That was it

Now to the hire and fire business..

Alberto Contador Velasco. 28 points..(Have to return 2240)

This shouldn't be to hard. You want to be sure that you get the points floating in? Don't take him. In an ideal situation he wins everything what he rides before the Giro + the Giro. Than he will pay you back. But he has to increase his score from last year with 300 points. With the mostly Spanish preparation he rides,  that is almost impossible.. Or.. he has to win LBL and FW. Advice: Don't hire!

Philipe Gilbert 28 points (Have to return 2240 points)

His season last year was outstanding/outrageous. Scored in every classic. Won one and well. a stage in the Vuelta. If he rides the same program as last year it is a don't buy. How in the world can you top that season? However.. The first stages in the Tour are build for Philipe and he wants them. This means, for the circumspect (?) reader POINTS! And Gilbert being Gilbert just also won a stage in the Algavre. So it's not that he's becoming tired of winning.. Altho.. Is it really possible to score that much again in every classic? Verdict: I will let you decide this on your own..

Tyler Farrar 26 points (Have to return 2080 points)

Have to do slightly better than last year. Problems on the horizon? Yes! Can he again top 5 in RvV or cpompensate that? Where can he make up the points in the Giro? (Giro is so heavy there a lesser sprint stages) Answer? Worldchampionship, MSR and the Tour de France. In the WC he is a big favourite. MSR should be do-able, In the Tour he can only do better.  So worth the points? He certainly is.  But just for the save points. Not for a big upset in points.

Vinzenco Nibali 26 points (Have to return 2080 points)

This was the easiest key to succes last year.. Have to score a little less to be again worth his points. And it seems that can be arranged. He just scored 80 points before the Giro. Can improve here. Altho! Can you top a 3rd and 1st place in a GT? Me not to impressed by his skills say he was a little lucky.. And there is not a chance he can do that again. Certainly not with some major results in Emilie and Lombardia at the end. I say don't buy him..

That's it. Your head hurts now. Trying to make English sentences from my sentences.. And my head hurts to. And if somebody wants do discuss the 24 point guys........ Be my guest!

Podium Cafe Battle Royal: Gesink vs. Van den Broeck

The battle between.. Belgium and Holland.. Pattaten met friet en zuurkool.. A not working goverment and a non exicsting goverment, between cross and.. korfbal.. Between a beautiful Flemisch accent and a loud G, Schevening FTW!, And between Johan Cruijf and Marc Marie Le Pfaff.. Oh.. and het Rijksmuseum and Manneken Pis.

Start.. Which started out as a Quick Step fan snark, went via a big win Quick Step vs Rabobank, to a van den Broeck vs Gesink fight. (You have to enlarge your horizon if you want to take down Rabobank!) Now both Gesink and van den Broeck want to be good in Valkenberg WC 2012. So  they both have the plan to ride the Tour and Vuelta next year (2011). But who's going to win that fight? What does the power of Podiumcafe have to say about this...

Podium Cafe Reshuffle the Giro-Tour-Vuelta

Edit: Tried to post this some time back.. Didn't work out.. Some data is outdated but ok. Let's try it again in the silent after season..

I saw the light. Finally. After some comment of my friend, because really.. A friend of Vino is a friend of me, 

My strongest dark horse is my resilience(?) I could relie on that in GT's. But if it is going bad in the Tour, I always can start in the Vuelta. Normally tho, I only ride one GT in a season with this team. In 2 years, when the group is more experienced, I can try to double again. Giro-Tour or Tour-Vuelta.

One thing. He's talking about his future by Astana... But that's not the point. 

Second. He talks about a safety net after the Tour?! That is so not appropriate. You can not have that after that after the biggest event in cycling. So.. We have to re-order the GT's. The right order is of course: Vuelta-Giro-Tour.. Why?

1. GT riders can double. The Vuelta and the Tour are far enough away from each other to double-up. Do the Vuelta and Tour or maybe Giro and the Tour. What would you see? GT riders who are battling on more GT's. As fans you could see more of you're favorite rider and more riders is most of the time more action. With the Tour stuck-in-the-middle it's almost impossible. Only few GT riders can make a good double.

2. The Tour is the thing now. There is no way back now. Nobody can skip the Tour because they want to ride an other GT. It is it. Screw it up here and there is nothing left.It's going to be like the WC from the GT's. So everything in preparation for the Tour. There is no way back.

3. It will give more credit to other GT's. The Vuelta is the lost son of the GT's. Only Spaniards race there and some upcoming talents. If you move it to the front more eyes are focused because the big guns can ride it in preparation.. I will also give younger guys a moral boost to ride with the real GT riders. When in the same team, they are learning, and  how they can beat them..

4. The change is almost perfect. The double-upers are most of the time Giro-Tour. That's not going to change. There is now only a more, civilized manner to get prepared. Ride the Vuelta. Recuperate, like Basso did this year, and ride the Tour. Because we've seen the Giro-Tour blow up many times don't we Menchov, Sastre?

Why this is never going to work?

The Tour in july is holy.. Enough said...

Podium Cafe Biggest surprise/upset cycling season 2010

I bet there are going to be a lot more polls.. This one is about.. Biggest surprise/upset.. (tadaaa!)

It could be anything. Rider who surprised you.. Sagan! Team what stunned your mind, course, stage, GT which turned out be more excited. A DS who opend your mouth saying Whaaa.. Or anything.. As long as the rider, person, newssite, thing turned out to be more surprising than you have expected.

Charges against Pellizotti have been dropped. He's a free man and is been punished for one year, without prosecution. After Valjavec the second rider who's been put on inactive but where no charges has been charged.
Strange case.. Irregularities in his blood passport caused the whole scene.. Without getting consequences out of it agaian.. Is it the end of the blood passport?
And where is Pellizotti going to ride next year.. If Androni may ride the Tour and Vuelta I know one team who's searching for a GT-man.. Also VacansOleil will be keen to sign him.. And what about Liquigas where their credo is: More GT is better! Or.. Is this Riis' plan B?
Questions.. Too bad some of the questions, UCI will not answer.. But we have.. again another soap n cycling world..

Ooh will ask one more thing.. Valjavec was innocent.. Or so we must believe.. Why didn;t he shout out against the system.. Or why didn't the cycling world that? And is this case going to tie the room together?

Podium Cafe Rabobank is set for 2011

It is a little early but in this transfer market you have to close deals when they are done. After Garmin, Rabobank is the second team to confirm their roster.. And what a joy the roster is next year. Can we already say their transfers were the best in the market.. (Apart from Team Luxembourg but that doesn't really count.. And maybe from Saxo and.. Well ok it's a dynamic market)

Podium Cafe The boy and his golden pedal. Or, Farrar Wins Today's Vuelta Stage

There was once a boy.. Who met a stranger. Boy he said.. I have a secret follow me. Hours and hours they walked through the desert. Halfway he asked.. "What is the purpose?" "Just wait my friend.. You are the chosen" Said the stranger. And hours and hours they walked. At the moment the sun hit the horizon the stranger froze. 

He took his carpet and prayed.. "Dear father. The man who can overtake everyone is here" And there it went. With type cracks, storm and wind there came a giant Sphynx out of the ground. "Go in my son. Don't take anything except the pedal in the middle of the 4th room" 

And in he went. The first room he entered was crowded with giant misses. Wherever he looked. All around him. But he continued and walked in Room number 2. Here he saw all giant bikes. No not Giant bikes.. He hesitated but continued. In to the 3th room.. He saw money. Wherever he looked., It was filled with money. He took a sit and waited. Should I take this.. or not.. He stood up.. and walked further.

In room 4. The boy saw cars. Giant cars.. Race cars. With turbo speed and horses on them. But in the middle.. The golden pedal. Before he would change his mind he sprinted to the pedal. A voice bellowed: " You are now the greatest sprinter in the world"

Telesport confirms Barredo to Rabo is almost done! Big fish 3 that would be for rabo? What's going on there? After all those year going Dutch... They seem going high all the way. LLS, Breschel and Barredo.. What is the plan?
Tom Jelte Slagter and Vemelfoort also joins from the Rabo CT, while Nuyens, Menchov and Kozontschuk are reported to go away.

Pretty good (sport)source reports Luis Leon moves to Rabo. After Breschel thatr is is the second big fish for Rabo. It seems with the minute more certain Nuyens and Menchov are the riders to leave for them.
