Nunnally Fired, Bruce Fields Named Hitting Coach
"As first reported on the Cleveland Indians’ official Twitter feed, major league hitting coach Jon Nunnally was fired before Sunday’s game and Bruce Fields was named as his replacement."
UPDATE: Here's the official press release (Ryan).
Castillo A Candidate For Coordinator?
"Possible new name in #browns OC search -- Eagles OL coach Juan Castillo. Source said he's "in the mix." #nfl"- @TonyGrossi
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nice outside-the-box thinking on this one, IMO. If a top name isn't coming because playcalling isn't on the table, why not poach a top OL coach for the position? Not saying that he's definitely the best choice, but an interesting one to me.
How Did James Davis Get Injured?
" Two witnesses to the incident from within the Browns organization said Davis injured his shoulder in a post-practice drill in which he was not wearing pads and the linebacker that plowed into him was. Three other NFL sources corroborated the witnesses' account."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wow. More questions arise about Mangini if this is true...
Kurz Signs Non-Guaranteed Deal With Cavs
Finnan has the story that the Cavs have signed Rob Kurz to a non-guaranteed contract to camp. The spot was offered to Joe Smith, who signed the same deal with Atlanta. Smith felt, rightfully, that after signing Powe, there wouldn't be a lot of playing time in Cleveland. Kurz is a 6-9 forward who shoots the three-ball at around 40%. I'm okay with him as the 15th guy, although I would have liked a true point for that role rather than a fifth power forward. Windhorst adds on his Twitter feed that C Darryl Watkins also will be coming to camp with the Cavs, with a slight chance at beating Kurz out for that final roster spot.
Shaq: Revisited?
Its amazing, the life of a rumor. At 8:30 this morning, it sounded like it had already happened. At 10:00, it was close to happening. Now after 11:00, the teams haven't talked in days. This, of course, means by 2:00, Danny Ferry will have no knowledge of any player even named Shaquille and will make an off-color remark about the name itself.
Czech Mate
The Indians signed 17 year-old Czech catcher Martin Cervenka, making him the first European player to sign with the organization. He will remain, under terms of the contract, with the Kotlarka organization next year. This is great. I'm just starting to get familiar with Dominican teams, and now I have to learn the Czech leagues?
Pontbriand Added To Pro Bowl Roster
Three Pro Bowlers from a 4-12 team? I guess I'm not complaining.
RealGM: Cavs Waive Jawad Williams
No real surprise here as Williams contract would have become fully guaranteed shortly. I'd assume that the Cavs will sign someone to a 10-day contract if needed in the short-term. That is, unless a trade happens.
Mangini Named Browns Coach
No real surprise here.
PFT- Savage Fired
I'm not overly surprised, but I'll admit, I'm a Savage fan. He improved the talent on the team during his time here and I hoped for a better ending. Best of luck to Phil.
Dupree Waived, Williams Claims Final Roster Spot
It looks like the final roster is set. Jawad Williams wins the battle for the final roster spot as the Cavs opt to waive Ronald Dupree. Nice to see a local kid make the roster. The contract is still non-guaranteed, so he's vulnerable to be moved at any point, but he wins the spot for now.
Hamilton Waived
No surprise here. The Cavs announced that they waived G Vernon Hamilton. With as deep as the backcourt is, he really had no chance to make the team.
Allred, Dickerson Released
The first two cuts of camp are in. C Lance Allred and G Michael Dickerson have been released.
Thomas Waived To Make Room For West
As a shock to nobody, Bob Finnan reports today that to make room for Delonte West on the roster, Billy Thomas was waived. Thomas had a salary of $826,269, but the contract was not guaranteed.
Browns Trade for CB Travis Daniels
An undisclosed draft pick goes to the Dolphins in return for the 6-1, 4th year CB/S.
Browns To Debut Brown Pants As Part of Uniform Tonight
For the first time in Browns history, the uniform pants tonight won't be white or orange, but rather Brown. The Browns applied for this in 2006, but haven't used them since. According to the article, they will be plain brown with no markings, matching the brown uniform socks as well. Fans will get their say on the new look on the Browns main website in a poll starting tonight. I was talking with a friend about this who threw an absolute fit about it. Me, I'm looking forward to something a little different, at least.
Indians Acquire Anthony Reyes From Cardinals
Luis Perdomo for Anthony Reyes according to the PD Blog.
Adam Miller Placed on DL
I got my hopes up when I saw he was scratched from his start that maybe he would be taking Julio's place. Then I saw this posting on the Bisons website. Hopefully we'll find something else out soon.
Browns Sign GM Savage to 3-Year Extension
"I am extremely grateful to Randy Lerner and the Browns' organization for giving me an opportunity as a first time GM back in January 2005 and now to continue with this extension through the 2012 season," said Phil Savage. "We have worked very hard to turn the Browns around, on and off the field, and our team is looking forward to the 2008 season. From a personal standpoint, I want to also thank the many Browns' fans who have been so supportive during my time here."
Not upset at all with this signing. Nice to see Savage sticking around and, hopefully, finishing what he has started here.
Games Thread: March 9, 2008
Split Squad Action with the Nationals this afternoon. In the away game, Jeremy Sowers struggled in the first inning, giving up four hits, three runs and a walk. In the home game, Jake Westbrook has been amazing and Barfield and Marte went back-to-back with shots that sounded like no-doubters for a 2-0 Tribe lead.

The game is on ESPN with Karl Ravech and... John Kruk. Blech. Can't stand Kruk...

Thomas Added To Pro Bowl Roster
Another Cleveland Brown is making Hawaiian reservations.
Rookie left tackle Joe Thomas was named to the AFC Pro Bowl team Tuesday. Thomas was chosen as a first alternate last month and was named to the team when Jason Peters of Buffalo dropped out due to injury.
-------------------------------------
Congrats to Joe. Still three more Browns as first alternates (Winslow, Anderson, and Steinbach).
MLB Hands Out Steroid Punishment
According to this story on ESPN MLB took some action on a few of the HGH-related stories of the past season. New Royal Jose Guillen (who, lets face it, has destroyed our national innocence) was given a 15-day suspension. Jay Gibbons admitted to his mistake and was given the same punishment. That same article stated the MLB has found "insufficient evidence" to give punishment to Troy Glaus, Rick Ankiel, Scott Schoenweis, and Gary Matthews Jr. No mention was made of the Paul Byrd situation, except for the fact that Guillen used the same online dentist as Byrd. Guillen also had his shipments sent directly to the stadiums (Oakland Coliseum, in this case), as Byrd has admitted to. The 15 day suspension was the punishment in 2004, which is why these suspensions are that long. Instead of the 50 days that there was a lot of talk of, are we now looking at a 15-day period where the Tribe might be without Byrd? That is a lot more manageable, assuming that two of Sowers/Laffey/Lee stay in the organization to the point where a punishment is handed down.
(Callups) This cannot be right... right?
According to that link, the Indians will call up three players today... Ben Francisco, Mike Koplove, and... Luis Rivas? Rivas is hitting .263 with 20 errors and would be the fourth 2B on roster. Oh, and he isn't on the 40-man roster, so a corresponding move would need to be made. What am I missing in this (if it is correct)?
Cuts Are In
Players that were cut:
RB Chris Barclay
OL Andrew Hoffman
TE Ryan Krause
OL Cliff Louis
WR Maurice Mann
OL Fred Matua
DB DeMario Minter
DL Babatunde Oshinowo
DL Chase Pittman
OL Brent Pousson
DL Melia Purcell
WR Steve Sanders
LB Clifton Smith
OL Rob Smith
WR Syndric Steptoe
-----------------------------
Contract Terminated:
QB Ken Dorsey
------------------------------
Waived (injured):
DB Justin Hamilton
DB Jeremy LaSueur
DL J'Vonne Parker
LB Jason Short
-------------------------------
LB Mason Unck (IR)
OL Ryan Tucker (suspended)
A few surprises there. I thought Dorsey, Krause, Hamilton and Minter were close to sure things and I actually had Matua and Pittman making the roster as well. I'm surprised they kept 2 FBs. Interesting at the least....
Asdrubal Cabrera Called Up To Cleveland
Asdrubal Cabrera has been called up by the Indians to take over the utility infielder spot on the major league roster. He'll take the roster spot of Mike Rouse. I don't imagine he'll get a lot of playing time, but I'd imagine he'd get more playing time than Rouse did. Also, the Indians have been pinch hitting for Josh Barfield late in games recently, so I'd imagine he'd be getting some relatively consistent defensive opportunities at the very least.
Sipp to Have Tommy John Surgery
Not good news for Sipp. The top relief prospect now probably becomes a prospect again in 2009. Hopefully he makes a full recovery and can be the pitcher we all expected, but this is a huge knock on his prospect status.
Fultz to DL, Mujica Recalled
Must say that I didn't see this coming. I hadn't heard of any injury to Fultz. Mujica has to be getting tired of the Buffalo shuttle. This is probably going to test Perez and we'll see Stanford in shorter roles than initially expected.
Captains Throw No-Hitter
Carlton Smith's great June just got better.
The Lake County starter combined with two relievers for the first no-hitter in franchise history Sunday with a 2-0 shutout of Delmarva at Classic Park.
Smith (5-5) struck out four and walked one over a season-high seven innings.
The 21-year-old right-hander retired the first seven batters, fanning the side in the first inning, before yielding a one-out walk to Victor Castillo in the third. He set down the next 14 consecutive batters before being taken out after the seventh due to pitch count. He had thrown 68 pitches.
After posting a 6.42 ERA in the first two months of the season, Smith tossed six innings in a combined three-hit shutout June 1 against Lakewood. In his last start June 16, he allowed one run on four hits, while striking out four and walking one in five frames. He currently owns a 5.77 ERA.
Tribe Interested In Runelvys Hernandez?
"A Yankees executive confirmed that they have interest in signing right-hander Runelvys Hernandez... The Cleveland Indians also are believed to have some interest in the former Kansas City Royals ace."
----------------------------------------------------
Hernandez obviously never lived up to his hype. His numbers this year at Pawtucket are decent, but not overwhelming. A guy like him, I wonder how he would handle a switch to the bullpen. I seem to remember a pretty decent fastball as a starter. If the Yanks want him, they are obviously the favorite, plus they could have a rotation spot for him at the major league level sooner than the Tribe would. However, if he's willing to take another minor league deal with an opt-out, I wouldn't mind giving him a look in the Buffalo bullpen. I don't know what he'd be looking for, but I thought I'd toss this out there.
