Loss of Power?
Not sure if it was from Friday or Saturday's game but I heard Buck or Pat comment on how people were wondering where the loss of power was going to come from this year.
What?
What people were wondering this? I haven't heard commentary/analysis from anybody, anywhere, wondering this question because I think it's obvious.
For starters, Wells, Overbay and John Buck are out, taking their 71 HRs from last season with them.
In, is JPA, Rajai and Rivera. I feel a quite conservative total for them collectively is 30.
That's a difference of ~40 HRs which if subtracted from last years team total, STILL leads the majors in bombs.
I figure the meaning of the question was that the Jays lived and died by the long ball, so a loss of power would directly result in losses on the scoreboard... but it has been apparent for a long time now that we are transforming into a speedier, more aggressive team on the basepaths which would easily help create runs.
Am I missing something? Or did the broadcast booth just feel like making a point that we still have power and score runs when to my knowledge, that issue never existed?
Brian TalLet's Give Up Runs Every Time I Pitch
What am I missing? How is this guy still a pitcher on this team, let alone in the majors?
Tallet's 21st appearance out of the 'pen today
- He allowed a run for the 13th time
- Failed to do it cleanly for the 20th time. His only clean appearance was two thirds of an inning on June 11.
- He didn't allow a walk.... for the just the sixth time.
- He has a 6.44 ERA (505th in MLB), 1.54 WHIP (395th) 4.62 BB/9 (447th), a 1.27 K/BB (465th)*
*Directly from MLB.com albeit this includes all unqualified pitchers as well. Regardless... it's bad.
Anyone else think we should move Rzep to the pen to replace Tallet who should be summarily executed? I mean released?
Then call up Richmond or some of the young kids to give it another crack on the days we need a fifth starter and to fill the void left by Morrow's vacancy.
Encarnacion
Can someone please tell me why Edwin Encarnacion continues to get regular playing time? It's not even so much that he's getting playing time, but that he's getting playing time over someone like Travis Snider.
He is a mediocre hitter with decent power, and I could tolerate his offensive production as I would any player with similar stats if they run smart and play solid defense. The latter two things are not part of Edwin's skillset, which basically means he has no value.
Add to that that he is taking time away from other players who deserve it and should be getting it and I am left scratching my head.
Snider is part the future of this team and needs to be out there. Bautista is preferred in RF, and rightly so, but the team is just better overall offensively and defensively with him at 3B and Snider in RF.
If this team is truly rebuilding, and we're not part of the playoff chase, why are we not commiting to our stars of tomorrow at this point? Are we really going to resign Encarnacion??
I actually think John McDonald is a much better option at third base. It isn't his primary defensive position but the guy has gifted hands and would probably adapt and be great at 3B just as he is at SS or 2B. He's not the worst hitter, not really any more a liability than Edwin, just doesn't have as much pop. I'm willing to bet he could be productive enough out of the 9th spot in the order if given the opportunity to play every day... of course they'd lose that key utility guy off the bench which is important to have.
